“…”
Deep in the quiet of their bedroom, Su Yuanyi’s father remained deeply troubled, so much so that even the urgent documents he was meant to review tonight had been completely cast from his mind.
“I say, dear, can’t you put off your face mask for a bit longer?” he pressed, turning to his wife. “Our daughter’s behavior tonight—doesn’t it worry you at all?”
With a rather aggrieved glance at her husband, Su Yuanyi’s mother finally peeled off her mask.
“You’re simply worrying too much,” she replied, a faint smile playing on her lips. “From the looks of it, she’s clearly encountered something wonderful.”
“Something wonderful, you say?”
Su Yuanyi’s father’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Although their daughter had returned home late today, the moment she stepped through the door, she had actually initiated a “I’m home” to them.
While it might seem a trivial matter to others, and despite her somewhat halting delivery, this simple act had occurred only twice in the nearly six years since she entered fifth grade.
To be precise, both instances had happened solely after she had started high school.
Frankly, at the time, he had mistakenly believed it was his second auditory hallucination.
Naturally, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of happiness.
However, later on, no matter what task they attempted, their daughter would appear beside them, her hopeful gaze clearly conveying her desire to help.
Unable to resist her persistent eagerness, both he and his wife reluctantly allowed her to assist with whatever she could manage.
Yet, while their daughter typically helped with chores, her involvement was usually limited to washing vegetables, doing dishes, and operating appliances like the washing machine; she had never truly tackled other household tasks.
The outcome, predictably, meant that he and his wife had to spend even more time than usual tidying up after her efforts.
“That’s precisely it,” Su Yuanyi’s mother mused, a knowing smile playing on her lips. “Most of you men simply don’t understand a woman’s heart. Our daughter merely wishes to improve herself, though she’s perhaps a little too eager about it. As for the reason… hehe.”
“Don’t just laugh!” he exclaimed, a hint of exasperation in his voice. “Tell me, what exactly is the reason?”
“If you’re so curious, why don’t you just ask her yourself?”
“If I could bring myself to ask, I wouldn’t be tearing my hair out here.”
“Well, then there’s nothing I can do. Our daughter is growing up, after all.”
“Wait… it can’t be…”
“Alright, alright, stop overthinking things,” she gently chided. “Only our daughter truly knows what’s going on. As parents, all we can do at a time like this is patiently observe. Now, go to sleep; don’t you have a lot of work tomorrow?”
“No! Su Yuanyi must still be awake. I have to go check on her.”
“Oh? …Hmph, that man truly won’t give up until he hits a brick wall.”
After all, the truth often strikes with the swiftness of a sharp blade.
Approximately ten minutes later, Su Yuanyi’s father returned to the bedside, looking utterly dazed and dispirited.
“Oh dear, what happened?”
Su Yuanyi’s mother struggled to suppress her laughter.
“When I went in, Su Yuanyi was looking at chat messages,” he recounted, his voice laced with confusion. “But… at first, she was incredibly angry, as if she wanted to hit someone. Then, she seemed utterly bewildered, frozen in place, before suddenly becoming very happy. It wasn’t just evident on her face; she was even rolling around on the bed… Should we perhaps find her a psychologist?”
“Pfft-hahaha…”
Su Yuanyi’s mother could no longer hold it in. After a burst of laughter, she embraced her husband from behind and playfully poked his cheek.
“And you have the nerve to talk!” she teased. “Back when you thought I’d dumped you, weren’t you sulking all day with a grim expression, yet you couldn’t resist sneaking glances at me? You’d freeze up, get called out by the teacher, and blush furiously in front of the whole class! And what happened after we cleared up the misunderstanding? On the day we first held hands, you were so excited you ran straight into the classroom door!”
“Huh? Did I…?”
“Oh yes, I remember it perfectly. As for the day we first kissed…”
“Alright, alright, let’s not talk about that,” he interjected quickly, his face flushing. “It’s far too embarrassing…”
Almost running a red light in a fit of absentmindedness, only to be caught by a security bot and lectured for ten minutes about traffic regulations—that was truly too mortifying…
