Chapter 14: The Weight of a Hat

“Wow. That actually gave me goosebumps just now.”

“You shouldn’t disparage someone’s sincerity like that. It hurts, you know.”

“…I’m sorry.”

“It was a joke. Just think of it as a first date present. You’ll probably wear this hat every single day for 365 days, and even I’d find that a bit much.”

“What? I’m not going to think about you!”

Jung Seunghee snatched the hat from a startled Eunhae.

As he walked toward the counter, she quickly followed.

“…Thank you. I’ll wear it well.”

“Think of me often, okay?”

“I won’t. I absolutely won’t.”

As Jung Seunghee handed his card to the clerk along with the hat, he found himself lost in thought.

‘Wear it always and think of me.’

Though he had uttered the words as a jest, he realized, upon reflection, that they were truly heartfelt.

‘Is it because this relationship is more enjoyable than I anticipated?’

“Humans are truly fickle.”

“Pardon?”

Eunhae gently tapped the back of Jung Seunghee’s hand, which she was still holding.

“It’s like I’ve eaten a hearty meal; I feel so incredibly reassured. I can’t believe how secure I feel.”

“What are you talking about, noona?”

She gazed intently at Jung Seunghee’s face as he chuckled in disbelief.

He was truly handsome.

Yet, Jung Seunghee possessed a more crucial ability than mere good looks.

‘How will I live without him now? If I had to go back, I don’t think I could manage.’

“Why are you looking at me like that? Am I really that handsome?”

“Yes. You are handsome.”

“I appreciate you saying I’m handsome, noona, but your words sound a little insincere.”

“No, I’m being very serious right now.”

Eunhae deliberately adopted a serious expression.

“Oh, how can I go to class when I have to leave you?”

She sighed deeply, her regret palpable. Even as she reluctantly rose, she couldn’t bring herself to release Jung Seunghee’s hand.

“Are you planning to take me to class with you?”

“If I had my way, I would, but you wouldn’t come along, would you?”

Two weeks had already passed since they started dating. She had come to understand Jung Seunghee’s personality to some extent.

He preferred efficiency.

He wasn’t the type to waste time by following his girlfriend into a class he didn’t even need to attend.

“Go on in. It’ll take you at least ten minutes to reach the College of Natural Sciences at your pace, noona.”

“My slow pace is entirely due to the inherent shortness of my legs.”

Eunhae grumbled as she set off.

Her journey to the lecture hall felt interminably long.

‘The lecture is an hour and a half, round trip twenty minutes… Good, if I don’t waste time in between, I can see him again in about two hours.’

After repeated verification, the effective duration for holding hands was confirmed to be three hours.

In other words, she could be apart from Jung Seunghee for about three hours without her ‘fate’ vision activating.

‘Not seeing it is so comfortable… seeing it is too difficult.’

Eunhae understood that this was merely a temporary measure.

‘But this is almost like an incurable disease. Even my mother couldn’t fix it…’

Her mother, a shaman, had been unable to suppress Eunhae’s spiritual powers. She had only barely managed to prevent her daughter from becoming a shaman like herself.

Eunhae slipped into the lecture hall like a shadow. No one paid any mind to her as she settled into the furthest, most secluded seat.

At least, that’s what she believed.

“Eunhae, I’ve seen you around with Jung Seunghee from the XX class lately.”

“Huh? Oh?”

A classmate, whose face she barely remembered, spoke to her.

Eunhae looked up, then instinctively pulled her hat down low. Then, she recalled that they were still within the three-hour window.

‘I still can’t see it. I didn’t need to cover up with the hat.’

“Compared to Jung Seunghee, my face isn’t much to look at, but if you reject it so openly, it’ll hurt, you know?”

“Huh? No, that’s not it. Your face isn’t nothing to look at.”

Eunhae, bravely lifting her hat, tilted her head.

While Jung Seunghee was indeed exceptionally handsome, other people weren’t necessarily unattractive.

“You’re not ugly.”

“…Thanks.”

The classmate cleared their throat and fiddled with their ear.

“Anyway, you’ve been with Jung Seunghee, so perhaps…”

“Perhaps what?”

Eunhae looked at her classmate with innocent eyes.

Regrettably, she lacked the social experience to understand subtle hints or read between the lines.

“Perhaps what? What is it? Do you have something to tell Seunghee? Should I pass it on?”

“…No, it’s not like that. You two are dating, right? Is that correct?”

“Yes.”

“…”

“Why?”

For a moment, a classic cliché flashed through Eunhae’s mind.

‘Actually, I’ve always seen you as more than a friend, as a woman…’

‘Ah, I’m not ready for a boyfriend yet. How do I turn him down?’

Fortunately, the classmate’s intention was not a confession.

“You seem unaware of what a lunatic Jung Seunghee is because you were on a leave of absence from school, but he’s a strange guy.”

“Huh?”

Eunhae didn’t understand her classmate’s words. The classmate, seeing her clueless expression, shook their head and sighed.

“It’s rumored all the way to graduate school. They say he’s insane.”

“There must be a reason for it, then.”

“What?”

“Seunghee is a really kind person.”

Kind enough to pick out a suitable hat for her when she was flustered about losing hers.

“He might have… gotten very angry about something, but there must have been a good reason for it.”

“You’re probably just defending him because he’s your boyfriend, but honestly, I told you because I expected this reaction.”

“Thank you for telling me, but um… if you have any feelings about Seunghee, you should tell him directly.”

“…”

“If you tell me this, it sounds like you’re talking behind his back.”

“Forget it. I tried to help, and you make me out to be a petty jerk.”

The classmate erupted in anger and returned to their seat.

Eunhae felt uncomfortable throughout the entire lecture.

During the break, her classmates huddled together, whispering. Head bowed, she could feel their gazes.

‘Why are they complaining to me about their bad relationship with Jung Seunghee?’

Human relationships were exceedingly difficult. Having voluntarily distanced herself from people since elementary school, getting entangled with someone like this felt overwhelmingly complex.

As soon as the lecture ended, Eunhae sprinted out of the classroom.

‘I’ll ask Seunghee what happened when I see him.’

However, she didn’t need to ask.

“Eunhae noona.”

“Oh! Seunghee. You said you were going to the library, so why are you here?”

“I came to meet you because you seemed so sad to part ways earlier, noona.”

“Uh, yes. Thank you…”

She was truly grateful, but it would be awkward if she ran into her classmates.

Eunhae quickly grabbed Jung Seunghee’s brightly smiling hand and tried to hurry away from the building.

“Eunhae noona?”

“I, I want coffee. I was so sleepy during the lecture… Yes, I was so sleepy I need caffeine!”

“Alright. Let’s take it slow.”

Even as he spoke, Jung Seunghee leisurely matched Eunhae’s pace.

Oh, creature with short legs, your name is Park Eunhae.

Eunhae glared at Jung Seunghee slightly, a mix of envy and jealousy in her eyes.

As they paused for a moment, someone shouted from behind them.

“Hey, Jung Seunghee!”

It was a voice so filled with rage that even Eunhae, who didn’t know the person, was startled.

Jung Seunghee, with a calm expression, slowly turned around.

“Hello, Senior Kim Taeyoung.”

“I’m not doing well, you bastard!”

The man, his face beet red, was wearing a lab coat, as if he had just stormed out of the research lab.

“It was you, wasn’t it? You did it, didn’t you?”

The graduate student rushed forward, attempting to grab Jung Seunghee by the collar. However, Jung Seunghee evaded him with a composure that felt almost elegant.

Naturally, the graduate student grew even angrier.

“You damn son of a b*tch!”

“It’s a pity to be greeted with curses right after we meet.”

“Pity? Pity, my ass!”

Unable to contain his fury, the graduate student tore at his own collar.

“Why, why are you doing this?”

Eunhae asked timidly. The graduate student, whose eyes met hers, muttered a curse and sighed.

“You must be the girl who’s dating Jung Seunghee these days, but this guy is completely insane.”

She wished someone would just explain *why* he was supposedly insane.

While Eunhae debated whether she should ask, the graduate student began to explain the situation himself.

“You’re the one who booked all the soccer practice fields, aren’t you? They say all the soccer practice fields in Gangbuk are fully booked for the entire month—how does that even make sense?!”

“Now that you mention it, I think I heard that your amateur team has a friendly match early next month.”

Jung Seunghee smiled. It was too bright a smile to direct at a graduate student whose face was flushed with anger.

But what, coincidentally, did the fully booked soccer practice fields have to do with Jung Seunghee being a crazy lunatic?
