Chapter 149: The Wedding Trap

[ays_poll id="2"]

“What’s going on? Why aren’t we going in?”

Sung Ji-woo tilted his head, puzzled as Yu Hiro, having opened the door, didn’t step inside. Yu Hiro ignored him and shut the door again.

“Is it crowded inside? Has the ceremony already started?”

Was the empty space outside because the ceremony had begun? Sung Ji-woo anxiously checked the invitation again—but there were still thirty minutes until the scheduled start time.

“What’s wrong?”

“Hmm…”

Sung Ji-woo strode closer to Yu Hiro. Perhaps deciding that showing rather than explaining was better, Yu Hiro opened the wedding hall door mid-sentence.

The heavy door swung open smoothly, revealing the interior—and immediately, Sung Ji-woo, like Yu Hiro, felt the urge to close it again.

It made sense. Every single person filling the hall was staring directly at them.

“…….”

Even though they weren’t the focus of this wedding, the intensity of the gazes on them was almost unbearable. Feeling as if they’d done something wrong, Sung Ji-woo fought the urge to drop his head.

Instead, he quickly scanned the interior with his eyes. It looked like a typical wedding hall, yet something about it felt oddly bleak.

After pondering what was off, he realized there was no music. The hall was so quiet that only the sound of breathing could be heard, and that emptiness created the somber mood.

“…….”

Clap clap. Suddenly, applause came from somewhere. Everyone seated turned their heads toward the source in perfect unison, their controlled movements making Sung Ji-woo shiver.

“What… creepy.”

He whispered this just loud enough for Yu Hiro to hear. Yu Hiro, sensing something unusual, pressed himself closer to Sung Ji-woo.

“You’ve arrived.”

But then something even more bizarre began. A man appeared near what seemed to be the officiant’s stand and spoke. His voice pierced the silence, sounding almost like a hallucination.

“…Excuse me?”

Sung Ji-woo reacted a beat late, as if his brain had frozen. The groom of this wedding—Kim Jae-seon, or rather, Jason Kim—was walking down the aisle toward them, in reverse.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

He arrived in front of them.

“No, what is happening…?”

“Shall we proceed this way? The ceremony is about to begin.”

He gestured to the outer aisle. Sung Ji-woo wanted to run straight back out, but as the lights inside shifted, it seemed the ceremony would start any moment. Entranced, he moved forward, with Yu Hiro close behind.

Sung Ji-woo moved his hand behind him, signaling with fingers a “let’s run” message. He repeatedly bent and unbent his index and thumb, then glanced at Yu Hiro—who smiled with full cheeks.

“…….”

Sung Ji-woo tried again to signal the door, but Yu Hiro pitifully covered his index finger with his hand.

‘What the…’

Despite shaking his wrist to indicate “let go,” Yu Hiro didn’t release him—he even linked their fingers together. Resigned, Sung Ji-woo offered his hand fully.

Soon they reached the vicinity of the parents’ seats. Jason motioned for them to sit, and they complied without much thought. Sung Ji-woo glanced around, uneasy.

‘Are we even allowed to sit at someone else’s wedding?’

As if sensing his trembling eyes, music suddenly started playing.

“Quite natural, isn’t it?”

“Huh…?”

“The wedding.”

“What… do you mean?” Sung Ji-woo wondered if he misheard because of the music.

“Just that the ceremony seems natural.”

Jason nodded at his repeated question. He hadn’t suddenly become clumsy with Korean; this was deliberate.

“The International Hunter Association prohibits personal contact between hunters of different countries.”

Jason’s explanation seemed to answer Sung Ji-woo’s silent questions.

“But submitting a formal request to the Korean association… you know the current situation.”

“……”

“And most such requests are rejected.”

“…Why?”

“If even a single hunter switches allegiance to the international association, it causes a loss in national power. So they try to prevent contact. This method—frankly—is a bit of a loophole.”

The whispered words left Sung Ji-woo dumbfounded. The door opened, the groom appeared—everything was moving too fast to process.

“This isn’t even your wedding, right?”

“Oh, this? The hall is in my name, yes. But I’m Jason, not Jae-seon.”

Whether audacious, cheeky, or just unfamiliar with foreign customs, Sung Ji-woo had a lot to process as he stared at Jason.

“……Too close.”

At that moment, Yu Hiro pulled Sung Ji-woo toward him. The music prevented Jason’s explanation from fully reaching him.

Sung Ji-woo, unsure how to explain, sighed and finally spoke.

“Listen carefully. This is all fake.”

“……”

“The International Association staged this wedding to contact us.”

“Yes.”

“…Aren’t you surprised? I can’t even react—I’m too dumbfounded.”

“Hmm, I kind of expected it.”

Sung Ji-woo glared at Yu Hiro, full of mock betrayal.

“When did you know?”

“Ever since you explained a bit earlier, I had a general idea. And seeing it in person confirmed it.”

“Then why did you act surprised earlier?”

“I didn’t expect it would be just the two of us. And I thought it’d be a simple illusion, not a fully staged event. Everyone here is an association staff member.”

“What…?”

“We’re in a tiger’s den right now.”

‘Why are you saying this so calmly…?’

Sung Ji-woo looked at Yu Hiro in utter disbelief. His face was pale—he realized they were surrounded by the International Association.

Glancing at Jason beside him, Sung Ji-woo saw him wearing a smooth, professional smile.

“Are you done whispering?”

The voice, knowing everything they’d been discussing, was kind—but unnerving. Sung Ji-woo reluctantly nodded. Jason tapped the shoulder of someone seated at the parents’ seats.

A man turned around.

“……Morgan?”

It all felt like a lie. Sure, he’d come because he’d been told to meet them—but he hadn’t expected Morgan to sit right in front of them.

Caught up in the moment, Sung Ji-woo hadn’t even considered what was happening.

“Nice to meet you.”

Fluent Korean spilled from Morgan’s mouth. Technically, Sung Ji-woo’s brain interpreted it that way, though his lips were slightly misaligned in pronunciation.

Morgan was a world-renowned psychic hunter. With psychic abilities being rare, he stood out among an already exclusive group.

He was a born ability user and a hero, famous for the saying, “Heroes are born.”

People had long anticipated a meeting between Morgan and Yu Hiro—yet here it was, in this awkward, staged setting.

Sung Ji-woo bowed to Morgan, silently thinking, Is this right?

“Let’s continue our discussion after the ceremony.”

Jason’s words were a relief. Anything to wrap up this strange meeting.

The ceremony ended quickly. Since this wasn’t a wedding for a couple, most procedures were skipped.

Morgan, Jason, Sung Ji-woo, and Yu Hiro moved to the restaurant. Others began eating, and the room quickly became lively.

Finally, Sung Ji-woo exhaled, feeling some relief.

Each person’s meal was neatly arranged: stone pot rice, galbitang, grilled fish—a typical Korean set.

Morgan took a spoonful of galbitang, emitting a Korean-like exclamation.

“Eat. This restaurant is well-known for its food. Jason chose it carefully.”

Calling it a “restaurant” felt odd, but Sung Ji-woo gave up thinking about it.

“Yes….”

As he cautiously ate, Morgan said,

“Now, let’s cut to the chase. Please help us.”

The steaming food and sudden request for help left Sung Ji-woo coughing uncontrollably. Without water from Yu Hiro, he might have burned his palate.

Morgan stared at him seriously as he fanned his mouth, then said:

“The situation is not good.”

Indeed, it was far from good. Sung Ji-woo thought to himself.
