Chapter 33: The Cold Moon Breaks the Blood Python

Yan Li’s heart clenched. He thought Yan Shu’s old ailment had flared up. Without a second thought, he gathered the little spiritual power left in his body and sent it into her.

The moment his spiritual power entered her meridians, a thread of cold, sinister energy rushed back through the point where their energies met.

His spiritual power, which had been sluggish under the suppression of the trapping formation, began to flow again.

Yan Li was startled. He quickly turned his awareness inward to his dantian. The cold energy traveled through his whole body, then merged into his spiritual vortex, quietly resonating with the Taiyin radiance. His previously disordered aura quickly settled.

He looked down at Yan Shu in his arms, his eyes shifting.

As if sensing something, the flying sword let out a clear, long cry.

A resonant hum!

The silver-white sword light surged.

A sword intent, so sharp it made the scalp tingle, burst outward.

Sun Mazi’s heart lurched. The surging sword intent filled him with inexplicable irritation.

He quickly forced down that unease.

‘Just a late Foundation Establishment cultivator. How strong could he be?’

A vicious light flashed in his eyes. His ghost-head saber slashed out with a roar.

Bloodthirsty aura surged like a tide, turning into a huge half-moon blade light that dyed the whole canyon dark red. The ground shattered inch by inch along its path.

This strike was fiercer than any before.

Facing the violent blade force, Yan Li did not retreat.

His spiritual vortex spun rapidly. Taiyin radiance rushed through his meridians and poured into his sword.

The long sword angled upward.

Clang!

Yan Li sank his wrist and guided the blade force to the side.

The bloodthirsty blade light, originally falling straight down, was deflected. It scraped past his side and slammed into the mountain wall behind him. A large chunk of rock collapsed, sending dust into the sky.

The moment Sun Mazi’s strike missed, Yan Li had already closed in. A chilling sword light went straight for his throat.

Sun Mazi’s pupils shrank. “What?!”

Too close!

At the last instant, Sun Mazi jerked his head aside.

The sharp sword qi grazed his neck, drawing a spray of blood. A bloody gash was carved into his cheek.

A burning pain hit instantly. Sun Mazi’s expression finally changed.

Since establishing himself at Qingfeng Gorge, this was the first time anyone had wounded him!

In his haste, he could only force his saber across to block.

Clang!!!

The silver-white sword light struck the ghost-head saber heavily, bursting with a harsh roar.

The ghost-head saber shuddered violently. Sun Mazi felt his arms go numb and was forced back several steps. He looked down and saw a small chip on the blade.

Sun Mazi’s eyelid twitched hard. This ghost-head saber had been with him for years, a genuine mid-grade artifact, and a single sword strike had chipped it?

Yan Li used the recoil to steady himself. His spiritual vortex spun at high speed. The cold energy and moonlight spiritual power wove together, and his aura grew more harmonious than before.

The canyon suddenly fell quiet.

No one had expected a late Foundation Establishment cultivator to wound Sun Mazi, who was at the peak of Foundation Establishment, head-on, and under the suppression of a trapping formation no less.

Sun Mazi wiped the blood from his face. The contempt in his eyes had vanished, replaced by gloom.

“Fine. I underestimated you.” Sun Mazi tightened his grip. The ghost-head saber howled as it slashed again, blood-colored blade light surging like an angry wave.

Yan Li calmly raised his sword to block.

The moment blade and sword collided, Sun Mazi’s expression changed.

The bloodthirsty power on his saber rapidly dissipated the instant it touched the sword’s edge.

“How is that possible?!”

Before he could react, Yan Li struck again. Sword light fell like rain, continuous and unending.

Sun Mazi could only block in haste. Clang, clang, clang, the collisions came thick and fast like sudden rain, sparks flying.

As the exchange continued, Sun Mazi’s face grew uglier. He found his saber heavier and heavier. The bloodthirsty power was being worn down.

Yan Li, by contrast, grew more harmonious. As the silver-white sword light and bloodthirsty blade force rose and fell against each other, the tide began to shift.

“Impossible!” Sun Mazi’s eyes reddened. He swung his saber again in a hard clash.

Boom!

Blade and sword collided again. The ghost-head saber let out a groan under the strain, and another crack appeared on its blade.

Sun Mazi’s pupils constricted.

Yan Li watched him quietly. His long sword trembled slightly. Moonlight flowed, and his sword intent turned cold as frost.

Sun Mazi’s face twisted. “A late Foundation Establishment cultivator… wants to step on me?!”

He slammed a palm against his chest. Pfft!

A mouthful of essence blood sprayed onto the ghost-head saber. The dim bloodthirsty aura suddenly surged.

The cracks on the blade were covered by crimson light. A violent pressure climbed again.

“Break!”

Sun Mazi shattered the ground with one step and shot forward as a bloody afterimage.

The ghost-head saber was raised high. Bloodthirsty aura gathered madly, condensing into a roaring blood python.

The canyon walls trembled violently. Rubble rained down.

Lao Zhao’s expression changed drastically. “Retreat!”

Shopkeeper Li’s scalp also went numb. The two of them, along with several guards, fell back in haste.

Not far away, Xuan Shiyan’s eyes darkened. His black sword had already risen silently, spiritual power gathering around him.

But when he saw the look in Yan Li’s eyes, his hand paused.

Facing the overwhelming bloodthirsty aura, a light flashed in Yan Li’s eyes.

His spiritual vortex spun rapidly. Taiyin radiance and that thread of cold energy flowed endlessly through his meridians. Before the blood python even arrived, his mind suddenly became clear.

A sword cultivator’s sharpness was never only one kind. The blazing sun could melt all things, and the cold moon could pierce clouds.

That indistinct sword intent finally solidified completely.

He lifted his head, his eyes cold and clear, and thrust his long sword forward, like a cold moon silently emerging from clouds in the night sky.

A hum.

The sword cry echoed through the canyon. The silver-white sword light crashed into the bloodthirsty python!

Boom!!!

The violent impact swept in all directions. Large swaths of rock shattered instantly.

At the instant the two forces collided, a wisp of deep blue cold spread along the sword light.

The bloodthirsty python froze. Frost rapidly covered its head. Ice patterns spread across its whole body. Much of the bloodthirsty aura was frozen solid, shattered ice crystals falling with soft clicks.

“Impossible!” Sun Mazi’s eyes threatened to split. He frantically drove his spiritual power to stabilize the python’s form.

But the deep blue cold clung like a bone-deep parasite, constantly eroding the bloodthirsty aura.

Boom!!!

Yan Li’s long sword finally clashed head-on with the ghost-head saber. The terrifying impact swept outward. The mostly frozen blood python could hold no longer and collapsed.

Cracks raced across the ghost-head saber. With a crack, the blade shattered, countless fragments flying.

Sun Mazi’s face went pale. He spat a mouthful of blood and staggered back several steps.

The silver-white sword light did not stop. It drove forward to within an inch of his brow, the chilling sword qi stabbing pain into his forehead.

The canyon suddenly fell so quiet one could hear a pin drop.

Lao Zhao’s mouth hung open. The broadsword in his hand nearly slipped.

Shopkeeper Li also stood frozen. It took him a long moment to find his voice. “That was a peak Foundation Establishment…”
