Chapter 5: Sleeping While Holding His Wife

After washing the two heavy military lunch boxes, Shen Qingxian’s fingers had turned faintly red from the hot water.

He wandered slowly around the narrow corridor a couple of times.

The unfamiliar surroundings, combined with Lin Yan’s powerful pheromones lingering everywhere, made it impossible for him to truly relax.

The communal washroom was extremely simple.

Fortunately, no one else was there.

He showered as quickly as possible.

Just as Lin Yan had warned, the hot water supply was unreliable.

It alternated unpredictably between hot and cold.

Though it washed away the day’s exhaustion and tension, it also stole much of his body heat.

After drying himself and changing into a soft silk pajama set, the bone-piercing chill of the outpost’s night immediately made him shiver.

The Northern Frontier remained frozen for more than two hundred days each year.

Winter hadn’t even officially arrived yet…

And it was already unbearably cold.

Holding his discarded clothes against his chest, he hurried back to Lin Yan’s room.

The stove was still burning.

Yet the warmth it provided couldn’t completely dispel the room’s emptiness and chill.

Lin Yan hadn’t returned yet.

After hesitating, Shen Qingxian walked to the wardrobe, intending to borrow something warmer to drape over himself.

His fingers brushed past Lin Yan’s military coats.

In the end…

He didn’t dare touch them.

Instead, he quickly finished putting away his own belongings before walking over to the bed.

The hard wooden cot, now covered with the soft blanket he’d brought, had become the only place that promised any warmth.

He lifted one corner of the quilt.

Almost impatiently, he slipped underneath, wrapping himself up from head to toe.

The bedding was still cold.

Slightly damp.

It carried the cool sweetness of his own pheromones.

Curling into a tight ball, he tried desperately to gather whatever warmth he could.

His body trembled faintly from the cold.

Yet his ears remained keenly alert, listening for sounds outside the room.

After what felt like an eternity…

Steady footsteps finally approached the door.

They stopped outside.

A key turned.

The door opened.

Lin Yan walked in, carrying an even stronger chill than before, along with the fresh scent of tobacco.

Closing the door behind him, his eyes instinctively swept toward the bed.

Then he stopped.

Only a dim wall lamp illuminated the room.

The lighting was soft and hazy.

His bed, once perfectly flat, now held a small rounded lump beneath the quilt.

Only the top of a head with soft black hair peeked out near the pillow.

The little bundle remained perfectly still.

As though trying its hardest to erase its own existence.

One eyebrow lifted.

Lin Yan could practically picture the Omega underneath, curled into a tiny ball, holding his breath in nervous tension.

He removed his cold overcoat and hung it up.

Deliberately, he made a little noise.

Sure enough…

The tiny lump quivered almost imperceptibly.

Walking over to the stove, he added another log, feeding the flames until they burned brighter.

Only then did he make his way to the bedside.

He didn’t sit down immediately.

Instead, he stood over the bed, looking down at the small bundle beneath the blanket.

“Asleep?”

His voice wasn’t loud.

But in the silence of the night, it sounded especially clear.

The person beneath the quilt remained frozen for several seconds.

Then, little by little…

With quiet rustling noises…

The blanket lowered slightly.

A pair of dark, glossy eyes appeared.

They flickered nervously, still carrying the damp softness of someone who had just emerged from beneath the covers.

Embarrassment was written all over his face.

“…No.”

“Not yet.”

His voice came muffled from inside the quilt.

Soft.

Almost fluffy.

Seeing him like that, the inexplicable feeling of fondness rose in Lin Yan’s chest again.

“Mhm.”

After a brief pause, he spoke in his usual straightforward manner.

No preamble.

No awkwardness.

“My name’s Lin Yan.”

“Twenty-seven.”

“Commander of the Third Northern Frontier Outpost.”

“You’ll be living here from now on.”

“You’re under my care.”

He delivered his basic information as though giving a concise military report.

Shen Qingxian looked at him with wide eyes.

Then nodded gently to show he’d remembered.

“While you’re here…”

“Follow my rules.”

“Don’t wander around.”

“Especially at night.”

His eyes swept over the half of Shen Qingxian’s face still visible above the blanket.

“If you need anything…”

“Tell me.”

“…Mm.”

Shen Qingxian answered softly once more.

The conversation seemed to reach a dead end.

Watching Shen Qingxian instinctively trying to hide beneath the blanket again…

Lin Yan suddenly moved.

He didn’t pull back the quilt.

Instead, he slipped one arm beneath Shen Qingxian’s neck and the other beneath his knees.

With barely any effort…

He lifted the entire bundled-up Omega—blanket and all—into his arms.

“Ah!”

Caught completely off guard, Shen Qingxian let out a short cry.

Instinctively, his hands clutched at the fabric over Lin Yan’s chest.

Ignoring his surprise, Lin Yan carried him farther toward the inside of the bed.

Then he climbed in himself, lifting the other side of the quilt.

The next moment…

His arm tightened.

He pulled the still blanket-wrapped Omega firmly into his embrace, locking him securely against his chest.

Shen Qingxian froze completely.

Behind him pressed an impossibly solid, burning-hot chest.

Even through the quilt and both of their sleepwear, he could clearly feel the astonishing warmth and the hard lines of powerful muscles.

The domineering scent of gunpowder and strong liquor engulfed him completely.

It was stronger than ever before.

There was nowhere to escape.

He could even faintly feel the steady, powerful heartbeat behind him.

Each beat seemed to echo through his own body.

“Go to sleep.”

Lin Yan’s voice sounded above his head.

It carried the unmistakable tone of an order.

His warm breath brushed gently through Shen Qingxian’s hair.

“This’ll keep you warmer.”

“We’ve got things to do tomorrow.”

He spoke as though this were the most natural thing in the world.

After all…

This was the Omega assigned to him.

His wife.

Even if nothing else had happened between them…

Holding his wife while sleeping kept them warm.

And, somehow…

It put his mind at ease.

Shen Qingxian’s mind had gone completely blank.

His entire body had stiffened like a wooden board.

Even his breathing became shallow.

He had never been this close to another person.

Let alone an Alpha whose pheromones and presence were this overwhelming.

Yet…

The body heat radiating from behind him was astonishingly warm.

It chased away every trace of cold.

His cheeks even began to grow hot.

That powerful arm wrapped around him carried absolute strength and control.

Yet, strangely…

It also gave him an indescribable sense of security.

As though every blizzard and every danger outside had been shut out completely.

His eyelashes trembled nonstop.

Without realizing it, his fingers tightened around the edge of the quilt.

Lin Yan seemed to notice how tense he was.

The arm around him tightened just a little more.

His chin absentmindedly brushed against the top of Shen Qingxian’s head.

“Relax.”

His words were already slurred with sleepiness.

“I don’t bite.”

His voice had grown heavy with drowsiness.

As if, to him, this was simply the most practical way to stay warm while sleeping.

Little by little…

Ever so slowly…

Shen Qingxian forced himself to relax.

The warmth behind him was simply too tempting.

And the exhaustion from the day’s travel and emotional strain weighed heavily on him.

At the tip of his nose lingered the strangely harmonious blend of blazing liquor, gunpowder, and icy plum blossoms.

Beside his ear came the gradually slowing rhythm of Lin Yan’s breathing.

In this place that felt both completely unfamiliar…

And impossibly intimate…

Shen Qingxian resisted for a long time.

In the end, however, the comforting warmth and overwhelming fatigue won.

His consciousness slowly blurred.

The tension seeped from his body.

Carefully…

He leaned back ever so slightly.

Until, at last, he settled completely into that burning embrace.

And drifted into a deep, peaceful sleep.

It was the first truly restful sleep he had had in many days.

After Shen Qingxian had completely fallen asleep, Lin Yan—who should have been asleep as well—curled his lips into a silent smile in the darkness and pulled the warm, soft body in his arms even closer.

Mm. He really is soft.

But why is he so tiny? There’s barely any meat on him… I’ll have to fatten him up properly.

Still, he’s way more comfortable to hold than a rifle.
