Chapter 6: The Standard of Practice

“Are you saying that as someone who knows me?”

“Still, you should explain the situation to the people around you.”

“That way you can receive help and also give it, right?”

Woo Yeongchan turned to Han Hoseong as he asked.

Han Hoseong only pressed his hand to his forehead.

Not expecting his agreement anyway, Woo Yeongchan continued.

“Whether you believe me or not, that is your call.”

“Just keep it in mind so we can both feel comfortable.”

“Wow…… A person really can change 180 degrees, huh.”

“But the funny thing is, listening to you talk, you actually seem sane.”

“I am sane.”

“Just so you know, there is no need to go to a hospital.”

“Then what are you going to do?”

“Keep acting as usual?”

“For the time being, I will have to live pretending to be Kim Jeguk.”

“Ah, or was it Zenon?”

As absurd as the situation was, his sense of reality had not collapsed.

Woo Yeongchan knew there was little he could do in this situation.

For now, there was no way to ask his family for help.

If he went to his parents’ house or the company out of nowhere, he would be kicked out by the bodyguards.

And going back to his original body was out of the question.

‘I need to survive first before I can figure out what to do.’

They say the most basic necessities for living are food, clothing, and shelter.

If he lived as “Kim Jeguk,” at least he could get those.

Woo Yeongchan planned to endure that way until he found a way back to his own body.

“Yeah, I understand you want to keep working.”

“Frankly, from my position, that is a welcome decision.”

“But before that, there is something to check……”

“Go ahead.”

“Can you even perform?”

Han Hoseong had been thinking the same question.

CEO Jang asked on Han Hoseong’s behalf.

“You said you do not remember anything.”

“How are you going to dance and sing like that?”

“I will just have to try.”

“Try…… Well, would it not be nice if hard work was enough to make things happen?”

Listening to their conversation, Han Hoseong silently thought, ‘If effort were rewarded, HIGH-5 would have gotten first place on a music show a long time ago.’

He got up from his seat and said:

“Then let us test it first.”

CEO Jang also stood up after Han Hoseong.

Woo Yeongchan looked back and forth between them, then rose to his feet.

“What test?”

A test that felt like an audition followed.

Singing, dancing, camera test, everything.

After confirming the results, Han Hoseong muttered gloomily.

“How can someone be this bad……”

Whether it was singing or dancing, he was fantastically bad at both.

He had not had any expectations to begin with, but it was so bad that even those faint expectations were shattered.

Han Hoseong banged his head against the soundproof wall of the recording room.

Seeing him so distraught made Woo Yeongchan feel troubled too, and he said sullenly.

“Well, that is because you are evaluating by professional standards.”

“By ordinary person standards……”

“We are professionals!”

“This is how we make a living.”

Actually, Zenon had never been a particularly skilled member to begin with.

His voice was quiet and his body was slow, flaws he could never quite fix.

But at least he passed the bar of looking like an ‘idol.’

“You are seriously bad even by ordinary person standards.”

“Just where did all your practice go?”

“Even if your head does not remember, I thought your body would remember.”

“I did not practice.”

“That is obvious.”

Even ‘Woo Yeongchan’ could not follow along no matter how much Han Hoseong demonstrated.

In the past, he could at least mimic decently.

It was as if his talent for singing and dancing had evaporated overnight.

“But you will get better with practice, right?”

“Yeah.”

Han Hoseong asked so desperately that Woo Yeongchan replied indifferently.

Han Hoseong lifted his head from the soundproof wall.

“Let us start with something easy and go step by step.”

“We can get through the Chika Chika Song, the Nom Nom Chomp Chomp Song, and the Hello Hello Song within a day.”

“Chika…… what?”

“You do not know this either?”

“That is strange.”

Han Hoseong tilted his head.

“Even if you are not Zenon, you must know this song.”

“It was the biggest hit in the first quarter this year.”

“You would have heard it just walking down the street.”

“I was in the military until two weeks ago.”

“Ah, is that why you do not know?”

“Then listen to it first.”

“Maybe it will come back to you once you hear it.”

Han Hoseong held out a tablet PC.

A music video thumbnail filled the large screen.

When Woo Yeongchan pressed the play button, a cheerful intro flowed out.

Jjara-rang-jja-jang—. Jjara-rang-jja-jang—.

Four men dressed in all-white outfits came scurrying out.

Han Hoseong, Moon Haeil, Seol Itae, and Lee Jujin.

They smiled brightly and sang.

Chika chika chi ka chika po

Chika chika chi ka chika po

After eating, we brush our teeth (scrub scrub!)

Upper teeth and lower teeth, thoroughly (scrub scrub scrub!)

“What the heck is this.”

“The Chika Chika Song.”

“A song we are grateful for, since it opened HIGH-5’s heyday.”

Fairy Kiss

“What?”

“It is the first song of the three nursery rhymes.”

The four members showed off their moves to the song.

They mimed brushing their teeth, then gargling.

Gargle gageureu gargle gareureu

Gargle gageureu gargle gareureu

After brushing, we rinse our mouth (boogle!)

No toothpaste left, thoroughly (bogeureu!)

Many emotions crossed Woo Yeongchan’s mind.

A sense of revulsion one feels when seeing adults acting like kindergarteners, and a sense of pity at ‘those guys really did everything to make a living.’

And the frustration that now he had to do that ‘everything.’

“Oh, wait.”

“What?”

“I do not see the guy named Zenon.”

“He will show up now.”

No sooner had he said that than Zenon appeared.

Unlike the other members, he was dressed in black.

He held a cute little trident in his hand.

“Is that supposed to be a germ?”

“Yeah, that is it.”

“You played the germ role.”

“……”

Zenon ran around poking the other members with his trident.

His face was as sullen as could be, whether that was his germ acting or just because he did not want to film this music video is anyone’s guess.

The attacked members trembled.

Then a giant toothbrush dropped from the sky.

The members each grabbed a toothbrush and fought back against the germs.

Every time the tridents clashed with the toothbrushes, a ching-ching tambourine sound rang out.

“Is not a 4-on-1 fight a bit too unfair?”

“You need that much to beat a germ.”

“You know what is scarier than a germ?”

“Dental bills.”

“Where is the innocence.”

Finally, the germ fell.

The four members, who seemed to be playing teeth, jumped around in joy.

Then the second verse started playing.

If you do not brush, germs come (ow!)

Permanent teeth do not grow back a second time

So let us all brush our teeth

After meals, do not forget, chika chika! (Wow~.)

Chika chika chi ka chika po, gargle gageureu gargle gareureu.

The hook repeated endlessly.

It seemed like the songwriter had been determined to imprint the act of ‘tooth brushing’ into children’s minds.

Woo Yeongchan thought you could not write lyrics like that otherwise.

After the music video ended, Han Hoseong asked.

“Well?”

“Have you really never heard it?”

“Yeah.”

“I see……”

“But you can memorize it quickly, right?”

“……”

He could not say he could not memorize such easy lyrics; that would hurt his pride.

But singing such a childish song hurt his pride too.

Which was the lesser of two evils?

As Woo Yeongchan was seriously pondering, Han Hoseong played another music video.

“This time it is the Nom Nom Chomp Chomp Song.”

“Ugh……”

“Focus.”

“That way you will memorize it faster.”

A music video with a similar vibe to the Chika Chika Song began.

The message was different, but the addictive melody and the concept that was a bit too much for an adult to pull off were the same.

After listening to the Hello Hello Song in succession, Woo Yeongchan seriously wondered whether his decision to pretend to be Zenon had really been the right one.

Han Hoseong earnestly taught Woo Yeongchan the three nursery rhymes.

Even a kindergarten teacher preparing for a school festival would not be more passionate.

But sadly, the student could not keep up with the teacher’s enthusiasm.

“Bigger movements!”

“Control your facial expression.”

“Stretch your arms and legs out!”

“Express every detail down to your fingertips.”

Woo Yeongchan glared at Han Hoseong’s reflection in the mirror.

He thought he was doing pretty well, but the nagging would not stop.

He was already making big moves, and the fact that his arms and legs were short was Kim Jeguk’s fault, not his.

And this was the best facial expression he could manage.

“Am I really that bad?”

Eventually, Woo Yeongchan stopped dancing and asked.

Han Hoseong seemed to think for a moment before asking back.

“Do you want me to be honest, or mix in a little comfort?”

“Mix in some comfort.”

“At first, it looked like a statue dancing.”

“Now it is more like a wooden puppet dancing.”

“Thanks for the comfort.”

Woo Yeongchan plopped down onto the practice room floor.

Dancing consumed more energy than he had expected; his legs were gradually giving out.

Actually, the root of the problem was this body.

In the opinion of Woo Yeongchan, who had possessed one of the healthiest bodies around, Kim Jeguk’s body was like a shoddily constructed building.

No muscles, frail and weak, with no strength at all.

“Shall we take a 5-minute break and start again?”

“30 minutes.”

“How about 10 minutes?”

“……15 minutes.”

“Fine, let us rest for 15 minutes.”

After a surprisingly fierce negotiation, Han Hoseong nodded.

Woo Yeongchan glared at him without hiding his fierce eyes.
