Join the ServerNext, I had to choose my auxiliary traits, but there was no rush. I decided to wait until I knew which map we’d be playing on.
For larger maps, I’d opt for Teleport; for smaller ones, Flash would be more suitable.
Wang Tianming surveyed the available traits, then shook his head, settling back into a patient wait.
‘Speaking of which,’ Wang Tianming mused, ‘why doesn’t my character have a weapon? How am I supposed to attack anyone? Am I meant to punch them? If that’s the case, wouldn’t my “blade” be a tad short?’
Still stuck in the queue, boredom gnawed at him, prompting him to scrutinize his own character once more.
‘During this waiting period, I can’t even control the character’s actions; I can only watch it move according to its predetermined animations.
I have no idea what it will be like once the game begins.
Yet, my character sometimes conjures an orb of light in their hand.
Is that a ranged attack, or is it the first-stage skill, “Rescuer”?’
Just as Wang Tianming’s thoughts drifted aimlessly, a sudden wave of dizziness overcame him.
By the time his head cleared, he found himself on the ‘Match Successful’ screen.
There was no opportunity to choose; the system had automatically pressed the ‘Confirm’ button for him.
With a soft `whoosh`, Wang Tianming found himself seated on a luxurious sofa, identical in every way to the one he had just left.
Yet, this time, a layer of cloth had materialized beside him, and beyond it, he could faintly make out another sofa, precisely mirroring his own.
A long dining table stood not far from the two sofas.
One person occupied each end of the table, while four others were seated on the side directly facing Wang Tianming.
All these individuals appeared as doll-like figures, each embodying the ‘Lucky Guy’ model.
These six figures were undoubtedly the ‘Survivors’ and ‘Destroyers’.
Yet, Wang Tianming found himself unable to distinguish between them, for their appearances were utterly identical.
“Welcome to the suspense-filled ‘Identity V’ (TL Note: A popular asymmetrical horror game)! I am Nina, your player guide.
This is Oletus Manor, a passionate battleground personally crafted for you by the Manor Lord!”
Nina’s voice finally chimed, a saccharine tone Wang Tianming knew he would never forget.
“For this round, the map is set in ‘Red Church’,” Nina continued, her voice holding a hint of playful mischief, “though there might be a little surprise in store!
This game adheres to ancient hall-level rules: characters cannot be duplicated—with the exception of the ‘Lucky Guy’—and there will be no ban/pick phase.
Players, please remember that the losing side, even if still alive, will be eliminated by the system.”
After everyone had entered, a collective daze settled over them.
Wang Tianming understood that the human faction was unable to see the Hunter’s selection.
Despite all of them facing the Hunter’s direction, some unseen force must have obscured their vision; only if the Hunter performed the ‘Visit’ action would the humans know their opponent’s identity in advance.
Wang Tianming attempted to speak, only to realize that the game allowed only typing, not verbal communication.
Yet, the Hunter’s typed messages were invisible to the humans.
What, then, was the purpose of typing at this moment?
Just then, a line of text materialized in the chat box: [Hello there, ‘Rescuer’ on the other side. I am the ‘Hunter’ over here. Can you see what I’m typing?]
The nickname field remained blank, yet the sender had explicitly revealed their identity.
Wang Tianming remained silent, refraining from typing.
He was unsure whether it was genuinely the ‘Hunter’ communicating, or if a ‘Survivor’ or ‘Destroyer’ was merely fishing for information.
He carefully scanned the six individuals across from him, but they showed no reaction, likely oblivious to the message.
[Huh? Aren’t you typing? I don’t know if you can see what I’m typing, but whatever, I’ll just get straight to the point!]
Another line of text appeared in the chat box, swiftly followed by yet another: [How about we call it a draw?]
Wang Tianming maintained his feigned ignorance, offering no reply, yet in truth, he was meticulously pondering the proposition.
[Look, the game rules are very clear: those who lose will die. But it doesn’t say that those who draw will die, does it? Why should we fight to the death? If you just let me kill two ‘Survivors,’ and then the others escape, wouldn’t that maximize the number of people who survive?]
A torrent of words flooded the chat, and Wang Tianming devoured them with remarkable speed.
Wang Tianming, it must be admitted, felt a flicker of temptation.
If a draw didn’t equate to a loss, then he, Wang Tianming, would undoubtedly survive.
While it would necessitate the sacrifice of two ‘Survivors,’ a brutal, no-holds-barred fight would invariably result in at least three or more deaths.
The critical issue, however, remained that the Hunter’s information was hidden from the humans.
Even if a mutual goal could be established, the ‘Destroyers’ would certainly show no mercy.
Moreover, this was merely a verbal agreement.
What if, after two ‘Survivors’ had been eliminated, the ‘Hunter’ decided to renege on their promise?
The basic reward for merely surviving this game, a mere 1000 points, was woefully insufficient for such a perilous endeavor.
Yet, exceptional performance in a match could unlock additional rewards, and achieving MVP status promised even miraculous items.
It was a grim truth that human hearts often succumbed to darker desires, especially when tempted.
Even legally binding written contracts were known to be unilaterally breached; how much less weight, then, would a mere verbal agreement hold in this lawless realm?
