Great Tengu gazed at Kiyohime, a flicker of confusion in her eyes.
Just then, a large screen materialized directly before her, visible only to her own perception.
“Ah! You startled me! How did it just appear? Is this the info panel?”
“Alright, enough with the chatter! Get over here and clear these minions!”
Kiyohime declared with an air of distinct impatience, before opening her mouth wide and spitting a stream of… no, not sputum, but a puddle of virulent green venom directly onto the first wave of approaching minions.
“Ew! That’s such a repulsive skill! It didn’t seem quite so disgusting when I played Onmyoji (TL Note: A popular mobile game, often referred to as ‘Yǎnyǎng Shǔ’ by players.)!”
Great Tengu recoiled at the sight, involuntarily shrinking back before fluttering closer.
“Which skill should I upgrade?” she inquired.
“The second one,” Kiyohime stated.
Despite her clear displeasure, she elaborated for Great Tengu, “Prioritize the second skill, with the third as your secondary focus.
Level your ultimate whenever it’s available… but then again, you probably wouldn’t grasp any of this.
I doubt you’ll even survive long enough to reach level six.”
“I… I don’t know either…”
The female player controlling Great Tengu proved to be exceptionally timid.
Despite the blatant jabs aimed at her, she exhibited not a shred of temper, even seeming to implicitly concur with Kiyohime’s disparaging remarks.
“Bamboo Forest Missile!”
Having transformed into Pipe Fox, Wang Tianming wasted no time.
After swiftly purchasing his initial gear, he activated his second skill and floated unsteadily out of the Seimei Well (TL Note: The starting area or spawn point in the game.), the small circular area marking his birth.
With a mere flick of his hand, a barrage of bamboo-tube projectiles erupted from the miniature bamboo cannons nestled beneath his form.
Pipe Fox, a creature of the air, never touched the ground, instead navigating by flight.
Frankly, its aerial movement proved no simpler than Kiyohime’s, a fact immediately apparent when observing Great Tengu, who also flew.
She wobbled erratically, appearing on the verge of plummeting at any second.
Yet, Wang Tianming, having accumulated several flying experiences, found himself capable of controlling Pipe Fox’s movements.
While not yet achieving the seamless precision of his own limbs, he could at least maneuver without issue.
Wang Tianming felt a surge of satisfaction at having selected Pipe Fox as his initial character.
Pipe Fox stood out as one of the rare early-game marksmen capable of swiftly dispatching minion waves.
While the “Defend Athena” mode was fraught with peril, it offered undeniable advantages.
The Seimei Well, positioned directly behind them, provided a convenient sanctuary for replenishment; should mana or health dwindle, a quick retreat allowed for immediate resupply.
This proved an exceptionally favorable condition for skill-dependent marksmen like Pipe Fox, as well as for mages whose entire offensive relied upon their abilities.
The level one minions posed no significant challenge whatsoever.
Wang Tianming, in fact, found himself with enough spare time between last-hitting to open the system’s information panel, curious to observe the equipment choices of his teammates.
Great Tengu, emulating Kiyohime’s build, opted for magic power items.
Given the near-absence of mana concerns, she began her purchases with minor magical artifacts like the Ancient Relic Fragment (TL Note: A basic magic item in the game.).
As anticipated, Black Child (TL Note: A character in the game.) embarked on a defensive build with his very first item, acquiring health-boosting armor such as the Bronze Armor Plate (TL Note: A basic defensive item in the game.).
Wang Tianming wondered if Black Child intended to commit fully to a tank role or if he would later incorporate a couple of damage items to augment his offensive capabilities.
Of particular note was the support Mountain Rabbit (TL Note: A character in the game.), who appeared rather ambitious.
Instead of acquiring gold-generating support items, she too purchased an Ancient Relic Fragment, seemingly intent on pursuing a magic power-focused mage build.
Wang Tianming, however, considered this a sound strategy.
With only minions as adversaries and no opposing Shikigami (TL Note: A spirit or deity that serves a master, often used in games based on Japanese folklore.) present, raw damage output would yield greater returns than traditional support items.
In stark contrast, Black Child’s approach struck Wang Tianming as remarkably suboptimal.
Under these specific circumstances, where he wasn’t even required to absorb damage, Black Child’s failure to build more offense to secure the minion lane seemed a significant oversight.
“Hey, focus up, marksman! The minions are crashing into our base!”
Just then, Mountain Rabbit’s voice cut through the air, jolting Wang Tianming from his reverie.
It was only then that he realized he had completely zoned out, leaving Pipe Fox idling, while his own minion wave had already begun its assault on the Main Camp Barrier (TL Note: The primary defensive structure of a team’s base.).
“Ah, my apologies,” Wang Tianming openly admitted, “I was momentarily distracted.”
Such an oversight was far from irredeemable.
He swiftly maneuvered Pipe Fox to upgrade its third skill, then hurled a lengthy bamboo tube directly at the cluster of advancing minions.
“Bamboo Tube Toss!”
The elongated bamboo tube struck the minions, detonating upon impact and visibly decelerating their advance.
Following this, Pipe Fox darted forward, delivering several swift auto-attacks that efficiently cleared the remaining minion wave.
Even the Main Camp Barrier possessed offensive capabilities; if only a handful of minions approached, they would struggle to even breach its immediate vicinity.
Wang Tianming observed the health bar hovering above the Main Camp Barrier.
It had been ever so slightly depleted by the recent minion assault, yet, in a mere blink, it had fully regenerated.
