Chapter 99: The Rescuer’s Debut: Red Church Strategy

Thus, all human players confirmed their identities, and the selection interface displayed the number (6/8).

They were:

Player 1: Mercenary, Naib Subedar;

Player 2: Coordinator, Martha Behamfil;

Player 3: Perfumer, Vera Nair;

Player 4: Seer, Eli Clark;

Player 5: Mechanic, Tracy Reznik;

Player 6: Thief, Kreacher Pierson.

Undeniably, this was a formidable lineup, with nearly all of the top-tier, T0 and T1 characters, present.

Any Hunter encountering such a lineup would likely be tempted to surrender on the spot.

Fortunately, however, two of these six were actually aligned with the Hunter.

Their presence was bound to create unforeseen twists.

The two remaining players who had yet to confirm their choices were naturally Wang Tianming, embodying the Rescuer, and the opposing Hunter, the one who had proposed a truce earlier.

After some deliberation, Wang Tianming ultimately opted for the Teleport auxiliary trait.

Though the Red Church map was small, Blink would prove less useful for him; Teleport, on the other hand, would allow him to instantly warp to a downed ally for a timely rescue.

Moreover, Wang Tianming hadn’t forgotten Nina’s words.

He didn’t know the precise meaning of ‘there’s a surprise,’ but he was certain it wouldn’t be simple; there was definitely something fishy about this ‘Red Church’ map!

Wang Tianming finally clicked the ‘Confirm’ button, and as if by prior arrangement, the opposing Hunter clicked ‘Confirm’ almost simultaneously.

With that, the count became:

(8/8).

“Dear player, please choose a nickname for yourself!” Nina’s voice, rather than the game itself, echoed in Wang Tianming’s ears, and a familiar translucent large screen materialized before his eyes.

‘What on earth? A nickname too? Why wasn’t this asked for at the beginning? And was this even useful? Wasn’t this just a waste of time?’

Regardless, without a nickname, he couldn’t enter the game.

Wang Tianming dutifully chose a nickname, then clicked ‘Confirm.’

Immediately after—

Game Start!

With the crisp sound of shattering glass, Wang Tianming saw his surroundings suddenly brighten.

He had already entered the Red Church map.

Endowed with the unique perspective of a Hunter role, Wang Tianming—no, the Rescuer, Angel Fuling—could survey the entire distribution of cipher machines within the Red Church.

First, she had spawned in the Graveyard area, where one cipher machine was located.

Glancing to her left, she noted a cipher machine near the Red Carpet gate, and a bit further ahead, another at the Garden Wall.

Looking to her right, a ‘King’ cipher machine (TL Note: A slang term for a cipher machine in a highly contested or important location.) stood by the Church side door, while the Small Cabin’s side door had none nearby.

Following a diagonal line of sight, one cipher machine was inside the Small Cabin itself, and another by the Cabin Wall.

Finally, in the very center of the Church, at the map’s heart, stood another ‘King’ cipher machine, also known as a ‘Mahjong machine’ (TL Note: A slang term for a cipher machine located in a safe, often central, area where multiple survivors can decode together without immediate threat.), allowing up to four players to decode it simultaneously.

These seven cipher machines were thus distributed.

Survivors merely needed to decode five of them to power the main gates, which, once opened, would allow them to escape to safety!

While it took many words to describe, Angel had actually observed all this simply by shifting her gaze.

The distribution of cipher machines was decent, lacking any three-cipher arrays (TL Note: A strategic formation where three uncompleted cipher machines are located very close to each other, making it easy for a Hunter to patrol and defend them.).

If the Hunter intended to ‘camp’ (TL Note: A strategy where the Hunter stays near a hooked survivor or a set of uncompleted cipher machines to prevent survivors from rescuing or decoding.) when only one cipher machine remained, they would find it nearly impossible.

The term ‘camping’ refers to a situation where, after Survivors have decoded four cipher machines, the final three undecoded cipher machines are clustered together.

The Hunter then patrols between these three machines using their abilities, disrupting Survivors’ decoding efforts and seeking opportunities to eliminate them.

Without further ado, Angel needed to act immediately: to swiftly deploy her abilities, track the Hunter, and safeguard the Survivors!
