Overlooking the sprawling mountain range, Qi Lin rapidly flapped his wings, soaring away.

“Once we traverse this mountain range, we’ll arrive at a vast grassland,” Ailin explained, gesturing forward. “The very thing we seek lies within that expanse. However, upon the plains, we must remain vigilant against Candillac’s patrolling cavalrymen and the packs of wild wolves.”

“Understood, no problem,” Qi Lin affirmed, then swiftly accelerated his flight.

“Ailin, we’re high above in the sky,” Nia questioned, her eyes fluttering open as she turned to him, having previously been enjoying the gentle breeze. “Do we truly need to be so wary of such things?”

“Better safe than sorry!”

Upon an expansive, boundless grassland stood a small fortress, constructed from sturdy cedar beams.

A flag, fluttering proudly in the wind, was planted atop its highest point.

Around the fortress, knights clad in greyish-white armor patrolled, their keen eyes sweeping left and right.

These were the border guards of Candillac, stationed here.

Suddenly, from the sky, a knight in pristine white armor soared into view, riding a winged white horse as if treading on air.

The patrolling knights, noticing the approaching figure and steed, instantly straightened their attire.

“Colonel!”

“Hmm, excellent work, lads,” the knight praised, dismounting and holding the reins while admiring the neatly dressed knights. “Keep up the effort, and remember: do not let any race attempting to trespass into Candillac’s territory escape!”

With that, the knight, addressed as Colonel, dismounted and proceeded towards the fortress.

As soon as the Colonel departed, a quick-witted knight led the white horse away to the stables.

Inside the fortress, everyone who saw the white-armored knight offered respectful salutes and greetings.

The white-armored knight, in turn, responded to these knights with a smile.

After a while, the newcomer arrived at a particular room.

Bowing slightly with a smile, the white-armored knight subtly adjusted his armor.

He raised a hand and knocked.

Only after receiving a response from within did he turn the doorknob and step inside.

The burly man inside, who had been sipping tea, immediately greeted the newcomer with a beaming smile.

“Ha, if it isn’t Colonel Kotia!” he exclaimed. “What brings you to my border post today?”

“Colonel Debory, I am here to convey His Majesty’s orders,” Kotia replied, bowing slightly with a smile.

“Oh? An order? From His Majesty himself?” Debory straightened his posture, his expression serious. “Understood. I shall execute it diligently.”

“Precisely,” Kotia affirmed, producing a sealed letter and handing it to Debory, his hand resting over his chest. “Just recently, His Majesty received intelligence that several rebels from other races are making their way towards Candillac. His command is simple: upon discovery, they are all to be apprehended and brought back to the Empire for His Majesty’s judgment.”

“Understood!” Debory declared, accepting the letter and briefly scanning its contents, then thumping his chest solemnly. “Leave it to me; I will not disappoint His Majesty.”

“Then, I entrust this to you!” Kotia said.

Hearing this, Debory nodded and exited the room.

Reaching a high vantage point within the fortress, Debory gazed down at the knights patrolling below.

“Lads!” he boomed. “His Majesty has issued an order! Several individuals, intent on rebelling against imperial rule, are heading our way. Now, for the sake of His Majesty, I demand you put forth one hundred – no, three hundred percent – of your effort to prevent and apprehend these criminals!”

“Yes, sir!” the knights responded in unison.

On the horizon, Qi Lin spotted a distant streak of green.

“Almost there, Qi Lin, Nia,” Ailin cautioned, his gaze fixed on the grassland below. “Remember, we must proceed with utmost care!”

“Don’t worry, it’ll be fine,” Nia replied, wagging her tail.

Hearing Nia’s words, Ailin let out a helpless sigh. ‘You’re the one who’s always the most problematic,’ he thought. Yet, what could he say? Nothing. So, he could only indulge her.

As Ailin pondered this, his brows suddenly furrowed.

A sense of foreboding washed over him.

Soon enough, that premonition manifested.

Fireballs began to rain down from the ground below.

“No good, dodge quickly!” Ailin cried out in alarm as he saw the fireballs hurtling towards them.

In truth, Qi Lin had already spotted the fireballs even before Ailin spoke.

Flapping his wings, Qi Lin ascended to a higher altitude.

“No, these attacks seem to be tracking us,” Qi Lin muttered, his brows furrowed. Even after ascending dozens of meters, the fireballs hadn’t fallen; instead, they continued to follow their upward trajectory.

“…It seems Candillac’s people have discovered us,” Ailin stated, his voice slightly grim as he summoned a bone saber and cleaved through an incoming fireball.

“But this is far too quick, isn’t it?” Nia wondered, a look of confusion on her face. They had barely arrived in Candillac ten minutes ago before being detected.

It was simply unbelievable; even if Candillac’s forces were quick to react and spot them, they shouldn’t have immediately resorted to fireball attacks.

Qi Lin silently dodged the fireballs. Indeed, it was too fast, so fast that they were struggling to react.

“Our top priority now is to get rid of these fireballs!” Ailin shouted, continuing to swing his bone saber, chopping down the incoming projectiles.

“More are coming!” Qi Lin yelled, his peripheral vision catching a faint glimmer from the ground.

A whooshing sound rent the air as massive snowballs hurtled towards them.

“Tsk, damn it!” Ailin cursed, drawing a circular magic array that glowed with a yellow light.

*Boom! Boom! Boom!* The snowballs struck the array with a series of resounding impacts.

With a resounding *CRACK*, the magic array shattered like glass.

“Here they come again!” Nia shrieked, her ears perked and her tail bristling.

Hearing Nia’s cry, Ailin and Qi Lin looked down at the new barrage of projectiles.

This time, it wasn’t just fireballs or snowballs; both came simultaneously, and they were even larger than before.

Gritting his teeth, Qi Lin rapidly transformed into a swarm of bats.

The bats split into two groups, one grasping Nia and the other Ailin, narrowly evading the incoming assault.

“What do we do?” one of the bats emitted Qi Lin’s voice.

“Fly!” Ailin declared, his expression grim. “We’ll fly directly across the grassland!”

“But what about our clothes?” Nia asked, her brow furrowed.

Ailin bit his lip, silent for a moment. “Never mind that! Getting away is paramount right now. We’ll figure out the clothes later.”

The bat that had spoken earlier nodded its tiny head, then led the swarm deeper into the grassland.

On the ground, Debory, sensing something in the sky, pulled out a pair of magic-energy spectacles and put them on. After identifying the airborne figures, he immediately ordered his knights to conjure magic arrays and launch fireballs and snowballs at the locations he indicated.

However, as he watched the rebels above evade their repeated attacks, Debory’s expression slowly darkened.

And upon seeing them prepare to venture deeper into the grassland, he nearly exploded in fury.

Taking a deep breath, Debory gritted his teeth and commanded, “All of you, every single one, channel your magic energy into me!”

“Yes, sir!” The knights responded instantly, without hesitation about the potential harm to Debory’s body. They raised their hands, conjured magic arrays, and aimed them at Debory, who stood on the high platform.

Magic energy surged, and thumb-sized beams of light shot from the arrays, merging into Debory’s body.

Due to the incompatibility of the magic energy, veins visibly throbbed on Debory’s forehead.

Enduring the pain that coursed through his body, Debory raised his hands, aiming at the swarm of bats in the sky.

“Come down, all of you!” he growled through gritted teeth. At his feet and before him, circular magic arrays, over ten meters in diameter, shimmered into existence.

With another low roar, a colossal beam of light, more than ten meters wide, shot straight into the sky.

Cold sweat trickled down their backs as Qi Lin, Nia, and Ailin, sensing the imminent danger, looked down at the ground.

“No good! Quickly!” Ailin roared, his pupils contracting sharply.

In truth, even without Ailin’s shout, Qi Lin was already flapping his wings with every ounce of his strength, desperate to escape the path of the beam.

Yet, it was already too late.
