Chapter 24: The Police Arrive and a Widespread Affliction

Driven by a desire to unravel the mysteries plaguing his mind, Qiao Xia chose not to flee. Instead, he calmly retrieved his phone and dialed the emergency number, summoning the police to apprehend the individual.

Previously, when Liu Dali had attempted to harm someone at the elevator entrance, Qiao Xia could have immediately had him detained for questioning at the police station.

However, considering his decent relationship with Liu Ge and the urgency of getting him medical treatment, Qiao Xia hadn’t brought up involving the police. The neighborhood committee, likewise, preferred to avoid complications, choosing instead to feign ignorance.

Regrettably, this very mindset had inadvertently provided Liu Ge with the opportunity to assault people at the hospital.

After witnessing Liu Ge harm him a second time in his precognitive visions, Qiao Xia realized he could no longer afford to be sentimental. He understood that Liu Ge needed to be detained by the police immediately, lest more people suffer injury.

Unlike the deranged Ding Ce, Liu Ge must have undergone some profound transformation to appear so monstrous and unrecognizable. This spurred Qiao Xia’s urgent desire to uncover the cause.

Should he uncover the underlying reason, there was a chance Liu Ge could be cured.

At the very least, he might pinpoint the catalyst for Liu Ge’s condition.

Moreover, he needed to ascertain the exact composition of the liquid-filled syringe.

With these thoughts occupying his mind, Qiao Xia successfully pushed aside his worries concerning Duan Yulan. His entire focus shifted to Liu Ge, and even his desire to play games completely dissipated.

Qiao Xia did not have to wait long. A police car soon drove directly into the residential complex. As it pulled to a stop before him, two uniformed officers swiftly exited the vehicle and approached Qiao Xia.

“Excuse me, are you Qiao Xia, the one who reported this incident?”

“Yes, that’s me!”

Despite Qiao Xia’s youthful, student-like appearance, the two officers showed no signs of perfunctoriness. They diligently confirmed his identity before proceeding to inquire about the details of the situation.

In response, Qiao Xia adopted a serious demeanor and recounted all of Liu Ge’s unusual behaviors.

“From what you’ve told us, Liu Dali currently poses a significant danger. Are you certain he is on the 20th floor?”

“Based on the timing, he should be on the 20th floor. Previously, when the neighborhood committee came to apprehend him, Liu Dali had threatened me because I was the one who reported him. Therefore, after escaping from the hospital where he injured others, he would undoubtedly seek me out first.”

As the police continued their questioning, Qiao Xia offered a slight fabrication.

After all, he couldn’t very well confess that he could see the future, and thus was absolutely certain Liu Ge was waiting for him at his 20th-floor apartment door.

If he had truly divulged such a secret, Qiao Xia suspected he’d be the one committed to a mental institution.

Regardless, it was safer to have Liu Ge locked away for now, to be released only after he was cured.

After hearing Qiao Xia’s account, the portly officer in front of him diligently took notes, while the other, a man with a square jaw, made a phone call. Upon confirming that an individual had indeed assaulted people and fled from the hospital that morning, he immediately addressed Qiao Xia.

“Alright, we understand the situation. Young man, please don’t return home just yet. Wait until we’ve gone up and apprehended Liu Dali before you head back.”

Qiao Xia, of course, had no intention of refusing.

After all, if he waited by the elevator, the police would undoubtedly descend once they had captured Liu Ge.

“Officers, I’ve witnessed Liu Dali having an episode before, and it was terrifying! It was as if his body was entirely beyond his control. Please, be extremely cautious when you go up!”

Once the two officers confirmed everything, they immediately headed towards Building 3, where Qiao Xia resided. Qiao Xia, a look of concern etched on his face, followed alongside them, repeatedly urging caution.

He recalled the nonchalant attitude of the committee members earlier; had Qiao Xia not forewarned them, many might have been injured, their heads potentially smashed by Liu Ge’s small hammer.

Beyond that, of course, Qiao Xia also harbored a hidden agenda.

He aimed to build rapport with the police, hoping it would provide an opportunity to snatch the syringe once they brought Liu Ge down.

“You needn’t worry about that; we will be careful! We’re not sure what’s gotten into people these past few days, but there’s been a surge in unprovoked attacks. The exact scenario you described, we’ve encountered quite a few times just yesterday, and we’ve arrested many. Our police station is practically overflowing.”

The officers, unaware of Qiao Xia’s ulterior motives, simply assumed he was curious and wanted to observe the commotion. They paid it little mind.

In fact, upon hearing Qiao Xia’s concern, the portly officer seized the chance to vent his frustrations. He spoke to Qiao Xia with a weary sigh, explaining that many individuals were exhibiting behaviors similar to Liu Dali’s.

This surge had directly amplified their workload, forcing them to work overtime, with no end in sight.

“Ah, so many people? Have they all attacked others?”

“Even we officers have been assaulted by these individuals during arrests. One colleague’s arm was bitten, leaving a deep wound; if we hadn’t restrained the assailant in time, a chunk of flesh might have been torn off. Due to the increasing number of such incidents, that injured colleague is still insisting on working, despite our prolonged attempts to persuade him otherwise.”

The talkative, portly officer was clearly a chatterbox.

After an initially serious demeanor, a mere few sentences with Qiao Xia were enough to reveal his true, garrulous nature.

The square-jawed officer standing nearby shook his head helplessly, well aware that once his partner started talking, there was no stopping him.

Heaven knew how long his ears had suffered under such an onslaught.

However, upon hearing the portly officer’s words, Qiao Xia’s mind became awash with doubt. He had initially believed Liu Ge was the sole victim of this strange affliction, yet now the police were suggesting there were numerous individuals exhibiting identical symptoms.

Could it be that, just as Zhou Li had claimed, the apocalypse was truly upon them?

Yet, even if it were the end of the world, it should manifest as frequent natural disasters.

Qiao Xia found the notion of zombies, as depicted in films and television, utterly improbable.

After all, the tired old cliché of mad scientists developing a zombie virus felt far too implausible.

Leaving aside other factors, the sheer amount of time, effort, and financial resources required to develop such a virus would be astronomical. Furthermore, with numerous spies operating between nations, any significant ripple would be thoroughly investigated and exposed in mere moments.

“Ahem, alright, let’s hurry up and apprehend him! If he manages to escape, it will only become more troublesome later.”

Ultimately, the square-jawed officer could tolerate it no longer. Just as the portly officer seemed poised to continue his rambling conversation with Qiao Xia, he promptly grabbed his arm and ushered him directly into the elevator.

Meanwhile, Qiao Xia remained by the elevator door, awaiting their return, and discreetly planning how to pilfer the item right under the officers’ noses.

The syringe nestled within Liu Ge’s pocket was of paramount importance; Qiao Xia was determined to acquire it, no matter the cost.

Yet, this particular act of theft promised to be exceptionally thrilling.

Qiao Xia wasn’t entirely confident he could successfully pull off the heist.

‘Wait, he only wanted to steal something!’

‘Why had his system’s warning function triggered again?’
