“The cafeteria? How did they know the teachers were all in the cafeteria?”
“Their phones. Communications haven’t been cut off yet. Though, for some reason, calls to other cities just show ‘out of service,’ and we can’t get online either.”
After hearing Li Lin Guan’s words, Qiao Xia wasn’t surprised that the teachers were in the cafeteria.
After all, if they could hide on the rooftop, there was no reason the teachers couldn’t seek refuge in the cafeteria.
What truly astonished him was that phones could still communicate, even if only within U City. This revelation left Qiao Xia utterly surprised.
He knew, however, that this wouldn’t last much longer. As this thought crossed his mind, Qiao Xia was reminded that only five days remained of the week-long period. He had to accelerate his next plan.
His objective for today was clear: leave the school, find a means of transport to replace walking, and begin their journey.
“Alright, dwelling on these thoughts is useless now. Let’s get ready to leave quickly! But let me be frank upfront: if your subordinates drag their feet on the way down, don’t blame me for slipping away alone.”
“No problem. I’ve already made it clear to them. Even the other students who wanted to follow us down were properly scared into obedience.”
Upon hearing Qiao Xia’s agreement, a smile spread across Li Lin Guan’s face. Without further delay, he quickly gathered those who wished to leave, preparing for their retreat from the rooftop.
However, many of his former subordinates remained on the rooftop. Li Lin Guan left them half a pack of food, considering it a final settlement for their past loyalty, which left the subordinates teary-eyed and secretly cursing their own weakness.
Yet, the thought of leaving the rooftop filled them with dread.
The world outside was incredibly dangerous.
Just seeing the students who had transformed into red-eyed monsters, they truly feared becoming such inhuman, ghoulish creatures themselves. They didn’t want to feed on human flesh, lucky to only harm others, or unlucky enough to be shot in the head.
Thus, with complex, yet relieved, emotions, they watched Li Lin Guan lead a group through the iron gate, beginning their descent into the teaching building.

As they made their way down the stairs, many trembled with fear, yet not a single sound escaped their lips.
They moved like silent, drifting specters.
Seeing that no one was holding them back, Qiao Xia felt that these individuals weren’t beyond saving. With a mind to instruct them, whenever they encountered a lone zombie, he immediately had Li Lin Guan’s subordinates gang up on it.
In the end, Qiao Xia would deliver the finishing blow, exploding the zombie’s head with a swing of his small fruit knife.
After enduring several such encounters, the group no longer felt as shaky as they had initially. Instead, they quickly adapted to this new reality.
Even the Ye Dafeng brothers grew bolder. Armed with sharpened wooden sticks, they tentatively began attacking the zombies’ heads.
Witnessing this, Qiao Xia couldn’t help but nod. ‘Humans truly are the most adaptable creatures!’ he thought.
‘The sight of them excitedly slaughtering zombies now, compared to their initial terrified, pants-wetting cowardice, is a stark contrast!’
Throughout their journey, however, Duan Yulan remained silent.
Her expression had reverted to its former coldness, her eyes glinting with a chilling light, as if sharp blades were about to fly from them. She exuded an aura that warned all to keep their distance, making the surrounding students hesitant to approach.
This left Qiao Xia, who had been secretly observing Duan Yulan, somewhat puzzled. He could only silently note her change, hoping for an answer later.
[“Holy crap, aren’t those the guys who left with Wang Su? How did they turn into red-eyed patients too!”]
As the group successfully reached the first floor from the fifth, Li Lin Guan suddenly gestured to Qiao Xia in surprise. He quickly pointed at three red-eyed patients lurking ahead, indicating that they were the culprits who had damaged the iron gate last night.
The main instigator, however, was not among them.
Because the group was still around a stairwell corner, the red-eyed patients wandering near the teaching building’s main entrance hadn’t directly seen them, thus they didn’t charge in a frenzy.
Following Li Lin Guan’s pointing finger, Qiao Xia observed that the tightly shut glass doors had been opened from the inside, their once clean surface now smeared with bloodstains.
On the steps of the glass doors, in addition to the three infected students, several zombies resembled monkeys scratching their ears and cheeks, restlessly pacing about, seemingly without purpose.
However, upon closer inspection, Qiao Xia immediately noticed something amiss.
An electric fan, continuously spinning and emitting a creaking sound, had been placed on a tree beside the glass doors, captivating the attention of the zombies outside.
Given its unreachable height, the fan remained undamaged, steadfastly rotating!
‘Damn, which company produced this electric fan? The quality is unbelievably good!’
‘Who knows how long it’s been running? Is it solar-powered?’
Qiao Xia gazed in amazement at the electric fan in the tree, vaguely guessing that while they had been hiding on the rooftop, someone in the teaching building had cleverly escaped danger by using the fan’s sound to distract the zombies.
Qiao Xia, however, knew that zombies relied on sound through his golden finger ability. Yet, someone else had quickly discovered this trick, which was truly impressive!
[“Qiao Xia, get ready. We need to be silent and follow…”]
Just as Li Lin Guan also noticed the electric fan in the tree, he frantically gestured to Qiao Xia again, intending for them to reap the benefits of someone else’s ingenuity. They would use the fan’s distraction to smoothly exit the teaching building.
Before he could finish his gestures, a cold flash appeared beside Qiao Xia.
By the time everyone reacted, Duan Yulan had already decapitated the zombies outside the glass doors one by one. She then sliced the electric fan on the tree directly in half with a single stroke, sending it crashing to the ground.
Such swift actions caused everyone’s eyes to widen in disbelief. They had never imagined Duan Yulan possessed such formidable strength!
Although Duan Yulan had directly intervened to save them on the rooftop last night, the effect was not as explosive as witnessing it in broad daylight.
It was truly one head per strike.
Especially the sight of large amounts of blood continuously gushing from the zombies’ heads after they fell, causing many to feel nauseous.
When they had killed zombies in the teaching building before, they had merely aimed to destroy the brain. They had not employed such gory methods as Duan Yulan, whose actions delivered an extremely powerful visual impact.
“Qiao Xia, we need to go to the cafeteria. I have something to retrieve.”
After re-sheathing her katana, Duan Yulan turned her head and looked towards Qiao Xia.
That gaze, combined with her spoken words, suddenly made Qiao Xia feel as if he had plunged into a cold, deep well. It was utterly chilling.
