In the pitch-black dreamscape, Xiluo’er heard a deep, resonant voice call out from ahead.
To describe it accurately, the voice sounded less human and more like some primal beast capable of human speech. Just listening to it sent a shiver of danger down her spine.
Xiluo’er immediately grew wary. Her earlier relaxed mood vanished without a trace.
This voice was definitely not Freya’s.
Scrambling to her feet, Xiluo’er’s hand instinctively flew to her waist—the place where she usually kept her dagger.
Yet, as her hand reached for the familiar spot, she found no familiar dagger hilt. After a moment of bewilderment, Xiluo’er realized she was in a dream; how could she conjure real-world objects here?
What was happening now?
Cautiously, Xiluo’er did not respond to the voice. Instead, she bent low, trying to conceal herself as much as possible in the darkness, and began to observe the space before her.
She wasn’t sure if observing a dreamscape would even be useful, but doing something was better than doing nothing.
The darkness stretched endlessly, with pure blackness at the edge of her vision. The continuous expanse of black made it impossible for Xiluo’er to discern distance or direction.
This was undoubtedly a dream. Freya and she had met in similar dreamscapes often enough, and Xiluo’er was already quite familiar with this ‘lucid dream’ sensation.
But if it wasn’t Freya, then who was this voice appearing in her dream? It couldn’t possibly be that she was just having a normal dream, could it?
Xiluo’er first assumed that someone had ‘invaded’ her dream and began to ponder any recent anomalies around her.
Truth be told, aside from the person she’d encountered at dinner who had disguised their appearance, she and Eve had been following Tia on their journey and hadn’t encountered any other unusual situations.
“Cat Tail…”
The voice resonated again, still deep and resonant.
Xiluo’er frowned.
‘Cat Tail’ was Xiluo’er’s codename within the cult. For someone to call her by that name meant they were very likely a member of the Chaos Cult.
Had the Chaos Cult discovered her betrayal and come to eliminate the traitor?
She quickly forced herself to calm down.
No, if they were meeting her in a dream in such a roundabout way, and hadn’t launched any effective attacks yet, then perhaps… there was another possibility.
After a moment of silence, Xiluo’er decided to take a gamble and respond to the voice.
“If you’re a fellow cult member and wish to speak, state your name and purpose first.”
“I won’t converse with someone of unknown origin.”
Xiluo’er spoke, her tone probing and calm, into the utterly dark space.
Indeed, after a brief silence, Xiluo’er heard the voice answer her question.
“I need an explanation for what happened in Karna City.”
“Until you clarify the full story, we won’t have an equal opportunity to speak, Cat Tail.”
‘Just as I thought…’
Upon hearing the voice’s interrogation, Xiluo’er inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.
She knew the Chaos Cult wouldn’t have been able to learn the full details of what transpired in Karna City.
The cult’s infiltration of Karna City wasn’t deep. Besides her and Shadow, the Chaos Cult should have had no other eyes and ears there.
This meant the cult should be unaware of her blatant attack on Shadow.
“Karna City? What do you mean? Is the cult suspecting me of something?”
“I am loyal to the cult…”
Xiluo’er feigned indignation at the accusation. If Shadow heard Xiluo’er’s words at this moment, he might just be angered back to life from his coffin.
Oh, wait, Shadow had been blasted to smithereens by Eve, so there was no coffin for him to be in. Never mind, then.
“Calm down, Cat Tail.”
The low voice remained perfectly calm.
“The cult merely requires an explanation. If you can provide a reasonable one, then naturally no one will doubt you.”
Xiluo’er took several deep breaths, pretending to ‘calm herself down.’
There was nothing she could do. Who would have thought someone as loyal as her would be questioned by the organization?
“Some time ago, the cult’s contact in Karna City went missing. The cult dispatched scouts to investigate, only to discover the contact was dead, and the cult’s plans in Karna City had failed.”
“According to what the scouts learned, the cult’s hidden operative in Karna City, Shadow, was killed by the mercenary Eve. You were present when he was eliminated, so you should know the specific circumstances, shouldn’t you?”
Upon hearing the voice’s question, Xiluo’er actually felt a sense of relief.
‘Is that all?’
From this question, it seemed the Chaos Cult was completely unaware of the precise details of what happened in Karna City!
If that was the case, then couldn’t she just make up whatever she wanted?
However, upon reflection, this wasn’t surprising for the Chaos Cult.
As the saying goes, ‘the whip is too short to reach.’ The Chaos Cult’s primary area of activity was in the southern kingdoms. Karna City, belonging to the Vanseti Kingdom, was located directly to the north, which meant the Chaos Cult had little penetration there.
Aside from Shadow, who was supposed to be carrying out some unknown plan in Karna City, she was the only other mole sent there for an undercover mission.
And Xiluo’er was a trusted confidante of the High Priest, so ordinary people wouldn’t suspect her of openly defecting.
Therefore, the Chaos Cult members were currently only questioning Xiluo’er’s actions.
Xiluo’er cleared her throat and began to spout serious nonsense.
“Yes, Shadow was eliminated by Eve right before my eyes. Unfortunately, I could only watch, powerless… alas…”
Xiluo’er’s voice was filled with deep self-reproach.
“Continue.”
The voice showed no emotional fluctuation, merely signaling Xiluo’er to go on.
“The situation was this: I was in Karna City at the time, undercover near the Vanseti Kingdom’s newly chosen Hero.”
“I only provided minor assistance to Shadow’s plan and wasn’t deeply involved.”
“It’s fortunate I wasn’t deeply involved, otherwise, the Hero Eve might have eliminated me along with him.”
Xiluo’er’s voice was now filled with profound trepidation.
“I also warned Shadow at the time that the Vanseti Kingdom’s Hero was recently in Karna City, and his plan should have been prepared more carefully.”
“However, Shadow believed his plan was meticulously prepared, and I originally thought there wouldn’t be any issues.”
“Who knew that Hero Eve, her intentions were so malicious…”
Xiluo’er’s emotions surged, and her tone shifted, now tinged with deep anger…
If Shadow knew Xiluo’er spoke so highly of him, he would surely be very happy.
