Chapter 113: Side Story 9 – Shattered Illusions in the Dark

After lunch, Wei Lan’s spirits improved quite a bit.

The main reason was that the dishes at this private kitchen were truly delicious.

But when it came time to pay the bill, the final cost left Wei Lan dumbfounded.

The two of them had spent nearly forty thousand yuan on a lunch.

Forty thousand yuan — that was enough to cover her living expenses and tuition for an entire year.

It was delicious, sure, but this was way too expensive.

When Lu Zijin swiped her card to pay, she saw her little dog’s pained expression and was thoroughly amused.

“Alright, let’s go home and rest for a while.

I’ll take you out to play tonight.”

Lu Zijin said this as she led Wei Lan out of the restaurant.

Zhou Xiao had already driven the car over and was waiting outside.

Lu Zijin and Wei Lan got in together and returned to the garden villa.

Once they were home, Lu Zijin took Wei Lan’s hand and led her upstairs.

“Still tired?

Get a good nap this afternoon.”

“A little.”

Wei Lan wasn’t as sleepy as in the morning, but she still didn’t have much energy.

“Then let’s go sleep.

I’ll stay with you.”

As they spoke, they had already returned to the second-floor bedroom.

After closing the door, Lu Zijin immediately wrapped her arms around Wei Lan’s waist from behind and kissed her.

She had wanted to kiss her little dog back at the restaurant.

She didn’t know why, but whenever she was with Wei Lan, she couldn’t help wanting to get close to her.

Since she was resting today, a little indulgence didn’t matter.

The next few days, she would have to continue giving her little dog the cold shoulder.

After all, she didn’t want Wei Lan to think she couldn’t live without her.

Lu Zijin’s kiss was gentle and lingering.

Soon, Wei Lan was breathless and fell back onto the bed.

Lu Zijin straddled her.

She reached out and touched Wei Lan’s cheek, her gaze dark and intense.

The more obedient her little dog was, the more she wanted to ruin her.

But thinking that she would be taking Wei Lan out tonight, Lu Zijin took a few deep breaths and held back the urge to bully her little dog.

Instead, she buried herself in Wei Lan’s arms.

“You naughty little dog.

How can you be this cute?”

Wei Lan’s ears turned red.

She held Lu Zijin tighter.

“I really like Sister.”

Wei Lan secretly hoped for a response from Lu Zijin.

But Lu Zijin didn’t say anything at all.

Lu Zijin would call her cute, would call her good — but she never seemed to say she liked her.

Wei Lan felt deflated, yet she still wanted a definite answer from Lu Zijin.

After mentally preparing herself for a long time, she still couldn’t resist asking, “Sister, do you like me?”

Lu Zijin hadn’t expected her little dog to be bold enough to ask her a question like that.

She laughed and said vaguely, “Of course I like my little dog.

My little dog is sweet and soft and adorable — how could I not like her?”

Hearing this, Wei Lan felt even more disappointed.

Sister was using that playful tone again when saying she liked her.

Feeling scared, she held Lu Zijin even tighter.

Lu Zijin’s words had just confirmed that in this relationship, the one in control was always Lu Zijin.

She was just a little dog that Sister called over to play with whenever she remembered.

But even so, Wei Lan still really liked Lu Zijin.

She was terrified that Lu Zijin might get other little dogs, so she held on even tighter than before.

Lu Zijin seemed to sense Wei Lan’s unease.

She reached out and gently rubbed Wei Lan’s hair.

But she still didn’t offer any promises.

She only said softly, “Sleep.

Aren’t you tired?”

“Mm.”

Wei Lan held Lu Zijin close, her eyes growing slightly red.

That was right.

Sister had already given her so much.

Where did she get the right to demand that Sister like her back?

Her heart ached bitterly, but she only held Lu Zijin tighter.

She had no family.

This was also the first time she had ever liked someone.

Even if it was like a moth flying into a flame, Wei Lan didn’t want to give up easily.

Maybe if she behaved even better, if she listened to Sister even more, Sister would like her.

Lu Zijin had no idea what Wei Lan was thinking.

She only noticed that her little dog seemed a bit down, so she rarely refrained from bullying her.

The room had the air conditioning on.

The two covered themselves with a blanket and slept until four in the afternoon.

When Wei Lan woke up again, she had already sorted out her emotions.

She saw that Lu Zijin was already awake, lying in her arms playing on her phone.

Wei Lan tightened her arm around Lu Zijin’s waist.

Lu Zijin looked up and saw her little dog staring straight at her — soft and obedient.

She couldn’t help herself and leaned over to kiss Wei Lan’s lips, then nuzzled against Wei Lan’s chest.

For a moment, Lu Zijin actually thought, it would be so nice if this could last forever.

But then she quickly drove that thought away.

She was not ready to have a girlfriend.

Lu Zijin shattered the tender mood herself.

Then she lost interest in lingering affection.

She sat up straight in bed.

“I’ll go ask Zhang Ma and the others to bring up some fruit.

Get up.”

With that, Lu Zijin left the room.

Wei Lan didn’t understand what had happened.

Lu Zijin had suddenly become distant again.

Just a moment ago, she had been kissing her.

She felt a little wronged, but obediently got out of bed anyway.

Wei Lan went to the bathroom to wash her face.

By now, her energy had mostly recovered.

When she came out, Lu Zijin had just returned as well.

“Let’s go.

Have some fruit on the first floor.”

“Okay.”

Wei Lan nodded.

In this relationship, she was always the obedient one.

Only by being obedient would Sister like her.

The fruit platter Zhang Ma had prepared was very large.

On one side was already-cut durian, and on the other was a salad made of several kinds of fruit.

Wei Lan ate some, watching financial news together with Lu Zijin.

But since she wasn’t interested, she just leaned back on the sofa and played with her phone.

A little after six, Wei Lan and Lu Zijin had a simple dinner.

After that, Lu Zijin took care of several urgent company matters.

Close to eight o’clock, Zhou Xiao drove them to Crown Bar.

This bar was the largest and most expensive in Panyang City, so most of the people who came here had some money to spare.

When Lu Zijin and Wei Lan got out of the car, it was already past eight.

Lu Zijin led Wei Lan toward the bar entrance.

Wei Lan was clearly a bit nervous — not about going to the bar itself, but about meeting Lu Zijin’s friends.

Lu Zijin seemed to notice Wei Lan’s unease and smiled reassuringly.

“Just stay by my side once we’re inside.

You don’t need to bother with those people.

They’re just a bunch of rich, idle second-generation kids.

We’ll stay a little while and then leave.

I have to go to the company tomorrow morning anyway.”

“Okay.”

Hearing this, Wei Lan felt a little relieved.

When they found the booth, there were already five or six people seated.

The man with glasses from lunchtime came over to welcome them.

“Lu Jie, you’re here?

Oh, and you brought the little alpha too?”

Lu Zijin shot him a cold look.

The man with glasses gave an awkward laugh and dared not speak further.

People like them were just rich kids who only knew how to spend money — naturally, they couldn’t compare to Lu Zijin.

So everyone had to show her some respect.

Seeing that Lu Zijin didn’t want them teasing Wei Lan, he immediately changed the subject.

“Have a seat.

We’ve all been waiting for you for a while.”

Someone quickly made room.

Lu Zijin didn’t stand on ceremony and pulled Wei Lan to sit down.

Although she wanted to hide her little dog away, she had already taken Wei Lan to a jade carving exhibition, bought her clothes, taken her out to eat — this matter would eventually be known in their social circle anyway.

So she might as well bring Wei Lan out openly and save these people from all the wild guesses.

Li Yan smiled and brought over a bottle of wine.

“Lu Jie, this is a freshly opened bottle.

Want some?”

Lu Zijin nodded.

“Mm.

I’ve got a lot to do tomorrow morning, so I can only have one glass.”

“One glass is fine.

I’ll pour for you.”

Li Yan knew Lu Zijin was particular — cheap wine wouldn’t do.

She had specially ordered a bottle of red wine that cost over ten thousand yuan, and it had already been decanted.

She poured half a glass for Lu Zijin.

Lu Zijin picked up the wine glass.

“Thanks.”

She took a small sip, then began the introductions.

“This is my little one.

Her name is Wei Lan.”

Then Lu Zijin introduced the others to Wei Lan.

“These are my fair-weather friends.

No need to remember their names one by one.

Just recognize their faces.”

“Okay.”

Wei Lan nodded.

Li Yan looked at Wei Lan, and her gossipy heart immediately caught fire.

“Lu Jie, what’s the situation with the little one?

When did this happen?”

“Not long ago.

About a month.

Anyway, she’s mine.

None of you are allowed to go snooping.”

The implication was also a warning not to investigate Wei Lan.

“Of course not.

Since she’s yours, she’s our friend too.”

Li Yan laughed and took a sip of wine.

Because Lu Zijin was present, everyone was relatively restrained.

Their conversations mostly revolved around gossip within their circle.

Li Yan looked at Wei Lan and asked, “Miss Wei, is it?

Would you like a drink too?”

Before Wei Lan could speak, Lu Zijin had already refused on her behalf.

“No need.

She doesn’t drink.”

Then Lu Zijin called over a server and ordered a glass of juice for Wei Lan.

Seeing how protective Lu Zijin was of Wei Lan, Li Yan was slightly surprised.

Judging by how Lu Zijin had introduced Wei Lan, this little alpha was probably just someone she was casually playing with.

She hadn’t expected Lu Zijin to micromanage the little alpha like this.

This wasn’t right.

Li Yan’s eyes lit up.

She wanted to gossip even more.

She felt that Lu Zijin’s feelings for Wei Lan were anything but casual.

Wei Lan listened to the gossip with boredom.

Before long, she had finished her glass of orange juice.

Lu Zijin noticed and turned to ask, “Want more?”

Wei Lan shook her head.

“No more.

I need to go to the restroom.”

Lu Zijin nodded.

It was already past nine, and they were about ready to leave.

“Alright.

When you come back, we’ll go.”

“Mm.”

Wei Lan nodded.

She stood up, found a server to ask where the restroom was, and headed that way.

Once Wei Lan was gone, the rich second-generation kids chatted about this and that for a while, then couldn’t help but start gossiping again.

“Lu Jie, is she really your little girlfriend?

She looks pretty young, doesn’t she?”

The man with glasses asked curiously.

“Not a girlfriend.

She’s still in college.

Only twenty this year.”

Lu Zijin smiled.

A twenty-year-old female alpha really did have great stamina.

No matter how much she played with her small swell until it was deflated, by the next day it would be full again.

“I never thought you’d like someone so young, Lu Jie.

Are you planning to marry this little one?”

The omega sitting next to Li Yan asked with a laugh.

Lu Zijin finished the last sip of wine in her glass and lightly shook her head with a soft laugh.

“How could that be?

Just spending some money to play around.

Treating it like keeping a pet.

I have no plans to marry anyone, and I don’t want a girlfriend either.”

“That makes sense.

Just playing around — that’s much more reasonable.”

The omega laughed and winked at Lu Zijin.

After all, there were plenty of omegas in their circle who kept lovers on the side.

Lu Zijin wouldn’t be the first.

If Lu Zijin had said she was aiming for marriage, that would have been the real surprise.

And Wei Lan, who had just returned from the restroom, happened to overhear these words about her.

The booth had very high backs.

She was standing behind Lu Zijin, who hadn’t noticed her return.

But several people across from Lu Zijin did see Wei Lan.

With expressions like they were watching a good show, none of them warned Lu Zijin.

Lu Zijin was still talking with Li Yan and the others.

“Does that little alpha’s pheromones match yours?”

Li Yan asked.

Lu Zijin laughed.

“Of course they match.

Otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered with her.

Just think of it as spending money to buy a pet that can provide pheromones anytime.

Alphas are all dirty anyway — I had to pick a young one.

At least she’s cleaner.”

With one sentence, Lu Zijin directly silenced the few alphas in their late twenties sitting across from her.

But Wei Lan felt as if she had been nailed to the spot.

Her face was frighteningly pale.

Spending some money to play around?

Raising her like a pet she bought?

So in Sister’s heart, she was nothing more than a toy?

She had vaguely suspected this before but hadn’t wanted to believe it.

But now, Lu Zijin had said these words out loud, shattering all her unrealistic fantasies.

That was right.

From the very beginning, Lu Zijin had said she would give her five hundred thousand a month, and in return, Wei Lan would provide her with pheromones.

From start to finish, it had all been a transaction.

Everything had been one-sided on her part.

Sister had never liked her, let alone loved her.

Wei Lan felt a sharp pain in her chest.

Just that afternoon at home, Sister had kissed her.

Wasn’t kissing supposed to be only for people you liked?

Wei Lan looked down at the floor.

Drops of water were falling onto the ground.

Dazedly, she raised her hand to touch her own cheek and realized that her face was already soaked with tears.

Her heart ached so unbearably.

Coupled with the noisy music in the bar, her head throbbed with pain.

She felt like a clown.

She didn’t know how to face Lu Zijin anymore.

She was just a plaything to her.

Hearing those words come from Lu Zijin’s mouth was like someone stabbing her heart with a blade.

Wei Lan’s body swayed before she barely managed to steady herself.

She didn’t go back to Lu Zijin.

Instead, she turned and ran out of the bar.

One of the rich second-generation kids across from Lu Zijin who had been hoping for a show hadn’t expected Wei Lan to just leave.

Finally, someone pointed behind her and spoke up.

“Lu Jie, looks like your little one ran off?”
