Chapter 116: Side Story 12 – A Bus Ride Out of Her World

The message was sent.

One second, two seconds…

Twenty minutes passed, and Lu Zijin still hadn’t received any reply from Wei Lan.

She gently traced her fingertips over the phone screen, her eyes growing even redder.

Why wasn’t her little dog answering her yet?

She really missed her so much.

Lu Zijin took a deep breath and poured herself another half glass of red wine.

She picked up the glass and downed it in one go.

Lu Zijin’s tolerance for alcohol was only average.

When she couldn’t sleep, she would usually just drink half a glass to help herself doze off.

She had never drunk like this before — glass after glass without stopping.

She didn’t want to stop.

She even hoped she could get drunk, because then her mind wouldn’t be full of her little dog.

Lu Zijin drank another glass, then stumbled back to the bedroom in a daze.

She threw herself onto the bed, but all she could think about was the image of herself pinning Wei Lan down beneath her.

She thought of Wei Lan’s lips.

Her chest ached with a longing that was almost painful.

She really wanted to kiss Wei Lan.

She really missed Wei Lan.

Her head was spinning.

She grabbed her phone and dialed Wei Lan’s number.

One ring, two rings…

After who knew how many rings, there was still no answer.

Lu Zijin tossed her phone aside.

The bitterness in her heart grew even stronger.

Tears started flowing from her eyes before she even realized it.

Lu Zijin sniffled and murmured, “Why won’t you talk to me?

I already apologized.”

The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt.

Her little dog wouldn’t text her back, wouldn’t answer her calls.

Maybe because she had been drinking, Lu Zijin hugged the blanket and cried softly.

She was twenty-seven years old now.

She had been the CEO of Lu Corporation for quite a few years.

Lu Zijin hadn’t cried in a very long time.

Even when the company faced major difficulties, she just focused on solving problems — she never cried.

She hadn’t expected that she would end up crying because she missed Wei Lan.

Once she started crying, Lu Zijin couldn’t stop.

Sniffling, she thought about everything that had happened over the past few days.

Even if she hadn’t wanted to admit it before, the truth was that she really missed Wei Lan.

Why was Wei Lan — usually so soft and gentle — being so resolute this time?

Almost a week had passed, and she had already apologized.

Was she still not over it?

Lu Zijin cried for a while.

She didn’t even know how she eventually fell asleep.

On the other side, Wei Lan had seen the text message.

She ignored it.

A little while later, her phone rang again.

Wei Lan didn’t answer.

Instead, she directly blocked Lu Zijin’s number.

Since she and Lu Zijin belonged to two different worlds, and since Lu Zijin had never taken her seriously, she might as well cut things off completely this time.

She admitted that she really liked Lu Zijin.

But that didn’t mean her dignity could be trampled on.

She would not be anyone’s plaything again.

She might be poor, but she was still a decent human being.

Wei Lan took a few deep breaths.

She wasn’t sleepy at all.

She found some jade carving videos to watch.

As long as she could keep her mind on other things, she could think about Lu Zijin a little less.

***

The next morning, when Lu Zijin woke up, she smelled of alcohol.

Her thoughts slowly came back to her, and she remembered getting drunk last night.

She rubbed her temples, got up, and went to the bathroom to shower.

When she came out, she felt a little better, but her mind was still on Wei Lan.

Last night she had sent a text and made a call, both unanswered.

While drying her hair, she called Wei Ting.

“Cancel all my morning appointments.

Have Vice President Zhang attend those meetings for me.

I’ll go to the company in the afternoon.”

Lu Zijin said.

Wei Ting was surprised for a moment — Lu Zijin was a workaholic, and nothing usually came before her job.

But she quickly replied, “Yes, CEO Lu.”

Lu Zijin hung up and went to find clothes.

Since her little dog was still angry, she would go to her instead.

Wei Lan liked her so much.

If she went to apologize in person, surely Wei Lan wouldn’t reject her, right?

Thinking this, Lu Zijin felt a little more relaxed.

Her little dog liked her appearance — that much Lu Zijin knew very well.

She immediately went to her walk-in closet and started searching.

She picked out a light-colored dress.

Usually, because she had to go to the office, she didn’t wear dresses often.

But if it would make her little dog happy, she would wear one.

Lu Zijin changed into the dress, then chose a sapphire necklace as an accessory.

After that, she hurried to the bathroom to put on makeup.

She deliberately chose a bright lip gloss, which made her complexion look even better.

After finishing, she looked in the mirror and smiled.

She curved her lips slightly.

Dressed like this, Wei Lan would surely like it.

With this thought, Lu Zijin felt a bit more relaxed.

She took her car keys and got a red Porsche from the garage.

Once her little dog stopped being angry, she would take her for a drive and then bring her to that private kitchen for lunch again.

But after she drove out, she realized she didn’t know whether Wei Lan had class today.

She put on her Bluetooth earbuds and called Wei Ting.

The call was answered quickly.

Lu Zijin asked directly, “Didn’t I have you look into Wei Lan last time?

Does she have class on Friday mornings?”

“CEO Lu, please hold on.”

Wei Ting said, pulling up Wei Lan’s information, then replied, “She has class in the morning.

Previously, she would go to work at the milk tea shop after class ended at ten.”

“Good.”

Lu Zijin responded and hung up.

It was only a little after nine now.

It would be too early to go over and wait.

Lu Zijin went to a nearby cake shop, bought two small cakes and a milk tea for Wei Lan, then got back in the car and drove to Panyang University.

Young people all liked sweets.

Wei Lan was the same — Lu Zijin had noticed before that Wei Lan liked sweet things.

She had pushed aside work today to come apologize in person and bought her treats.

More importantly, she had put on delicate makeup today — something she wouldn’t even do for the office.

With this much sincerity, Wei Lan shouldn’t reject her.

Thinking this, Lu Zijin felt full of confidence.

Soon, she parked near the school gate.

Lu Zijin rolled down the window and kept an eye on the school entrance.

The information Wei Ting had given was very accurate.

At 5 past 10, Wei Lan came out of the university gate carrying a single-shoulder bag.

Lu Zijin quickly grabbed the cake and milk tea and got out of the car.

Her little dog — why did she have to send the money back?

Was she really going back to work at that milk tea shop?

Lu Zijin stepped out of her flashy luxury car.

She was already good-looking, and with her makeup done today, she drew quite a bit of attention from people around her.

Lu Zijin didn’t care.

She walked straight toward Wei Lan.

Wei Lan took a few steps, then seemed to notice Lu Zijin as well.

Her fists clenched tightly.

She took a deep breath.

She hadn’t seen Lu Zijin in over a week.

Lu Zijin was still as beautiful as ever.

Today she was wearing a waist-cinched dress, had applied delicate makeup, and her lip gloss color seemed different too.

Wei Lan quickly shook her head.

None of this had anything to do with her anymore.

She and Lu Zijin were from two different worlds.

And she wasn’t so pathetic as to actually be someone’s dog.

Then, acting as if she hadn’t seen Lu Zijin at all, Wei Lan walked straight toward the bus stop at the school gate.

Lu Zijin had just seen Wei Lan staring at her.

She smiled and walked toward Wei Lan.

But before she had even gone halfway, Wei Lan looked away — no longer looking at her, even deliberately veering to the right.

The smile on Lu Zijin’s face faded.

Was she still this angry?

She sighed.

She hadn’t expected this little alpha to be so stubborn — she still didn’t want to talk to her.

But Lu Zijin also knew that what she had said was pretty bad.

No wonder Wei Lan was angry.

She just wouldn’t say those things again in the future.

Thinking this, Lu Zijin put her smile back on and continued walking toward Wei Lan.

Wei Lan stood at the bus stop, hoping the bus would come soon.

She didn’t want any more interactions with Lu Zijin.

But the more she hoped the bus would arrive early, the more none came.

Before long, Wei Lan saw Lu Zijin stop three or four steps in front of her.

Wei Lan didn’t want to talk to her, so she turned her head and looked elsewhere.

But Lu Zijin spoke.

“I’m sorry.

I hurt you with what I said that day.

It’s been a week now — aren’t you over it yet?”

Wei Lan glanced at her but didn’t say much.

Seeing that Wei Lan was still cold toward her, Lu Zijin smiled again and said, “Don’t be angry anymore.

I didn’t even go to the company today — I came specially to pick you up for a drive.

For lunch, how about we go to that private kitchen again?”

As she spoke, she lifted the small cakes in her hand.

“I also bought you cake and milk tea.

You can have them on the way.

They should be pretty good.”

Lu Zijin saw that Wei Lan was still just standing there looking at her, not moving.

So she decided to take Wei Lan’s hand and act a little spoiled.

But the moment Lu Zijin’s hand reached out, Wei Lan stepped back two paces.

“CEO Lu, please have some self-respect.

I already made myself very clear before.

From now on, you and I have no relationship.

As for the money I owe you for the clothes and meals, I will save up and pay you back slowly.”

Wei Lan looked directly into Lu Zijin’s eyes and spoke in a calm, steady voice.

She had thought that when she saw Lu Zijin again, she might lose control of her emotions.

But that didn’t happen.

Maybe this past week had given her time to truly think things through.

She and Lu Zijin lived in completely different circumstances.

Lu Zijin had only been playing with her.

From start to finish, only she had been foolish enough to take it seriously.

She would never do something like this again.

Just then, the bus Wei Lan had been waiting for arrived.

She nodded at Lu Zijin.

“CEO Lu, don’t bother coming to find me again.

I won’t do what I used to do.

My bus is here.

I’m leaving.”

With that, Wei Lan turned and ran onto the bus without looking back.

Lu Zijin looked at her empty right hand.

She had just been about to take Wei Lan’s hand.

She hadn’t expected Wei Lan to dodge.

Her right hand trembled slightly.

Her chest ached with sharp, stabbing pains.

Wei Lan’s attitude toward her was far more resolute than she had imagined.

The way she looked, she really seemed to want to cut ties completely.

Thinking this, Lu Zijin’s eyes reddened.

She quickly shook her head.

No.

Her little dog liked her so much — she must still be angry, saying these things on purpose.

If she came to see her a few more times, Wei Lan would surely soften and make up with her.

Lu Zijin got back into the car in a daze.

Her mouth tasted unbearably bitter, so she took a sip of the milk tea.

The milk tea was cloyingly sweet, but Lu Zijin still felt a bitter taste spreading in her mouth.

Her heart ached with a sour, heavy pain.
