Chapter 117: Side Story 13 – Replaceable

Lu Zijin took a while to compose herself before starting the car.

Then she drove back to the villa in a daze and returned to her own room.

She sat slumped in the single armchair in her room, feeling an aching, swollen sensation in her chest.

She had dressed up so beautifully today, but in the end, her little dog hadn’t even looked at her.

Her chest felt so blocked and uncomfortable that she got up and changed into a lightweight suit, then had Zhou Xiao drive her to the company.

Only when she was working could she temporarily forget about Wei Lan.

By the time Lu Zijin arrived at the company, it was nearly eleven o’clock.

She had her assistant bring all the documents into her office and started going through them.

By the afternoon, Lu Zijin still showed no sign of wanting to eat.

Wei Ting took the freshly delivered meal and knocked on Lu Zijin’s office door.

Lu Zijin’s voice came from inside.

“Come in.”

Wei Ting turned the doorknob and entered Lu Zijin’s office.

“CEO Lu, your lunch is here.”

Lu Zijin nodded.

She reached up and rubbed her temples.

“Just put it on the coffee table.

I’m not hungry.”

Then she spoke again.

“Help me look into Wei Lan’s daily activities over the past few days.

Apart from going to school and the milk tea shop, where else does she go every day?”

Wei Ting’s thoughts were racing, but her face remained calm.

She had known all along that the reason CEO Lu had been off for the past week was because of that little alpha.

That little alpha really had some skill — she had never seen Lu Zijin so invested in any alpha before.

“Yes, CEO Lu.

I’ll have someone look into it right away.”

Wei Ting said respectfully.

After Wei Ting left, Lu Zijin continued reading another document, then went to the coffee table to eat lunch.

But with her mind on Wei Lan, she couldn’t eat at all.

Even though her lunch was specially supplied by a top restaurant, the food tasted like sawdust in her mouth.

Why was her little one so temperamental?

She had already lowered herself first, yet Wei Lan still wouldn’t talk to her.

Lu Zijin rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.

She didn’t understand how young people these days thought.

She would first have someone check Wei Lan’s daily routine so she could find her again without missing her.

On the other side, Wei Lan was currently working at the milk tea shop.

The busiest time was in the afternoon, when more and more people came to buy milk tea.

She usually had to work until around two in the afternoon before she had time to eat lunch.

Wei Lan and the other shop assistants were constantly mixing various drinks.

By a little past two, it was finally her turn to eat.

Wei Lan bought a bowl of potato starch noodles from a nearby shop.

She worked here earning twenty yuan an hour.

Today she could work eight hours, earning a hundred and sixty yuan.

After subtracting the cost of lunch and dinner, she could still save over a hundred.

This job was tiring, but the pay was daily — very friendly for a college student like her.

Wei Lan sat at a small table in the shop and ate her potato starch noodles.

Twelve yuan a serving — tasty and not expensive.

After eating, she had to continue working until seven in the evening.

So she spent the whole afternoon at the milk tea shop.

At seven in the evening, she finally got paid and finished work.

Wei Lan couldn’t afford to buy anything too expensive to eat.

She still had to pay rent every month.

On her way back in the evening, she had a bowl of noodles from a street stall downstairs, then hurried home.

Once home, Wei Lan didn’t dare rest.

She had lost two of her part-time jobs, so her income had suddenly dropped.

Therefore, she decided to spend two hours tomorrow evening setting up a stall at the nearby jade market.

She had already carved quite a few pieces.

She had also bought a second-hand polishing machine for home use, so she could polish things at home.

Fortunately, she lived in an old residential complex.

The neighbors next door were rarely home, and the people upstairs and downstairs were elderly — the kind with very poor hearing who wouldn’t hear even if someone banged on their door.

So the noise from her carving and polishing didn’t disturb anyone.

Because she didn’t have much money, the materials she bought were cheap Xiuyu jade.

But all the designs and patterns were her own.

Wei Lan looked at her various carvings, big and small, and thought that if she sold them cheaply, she might be able to sell a few pieces.

The material wasn’t valuable — if she sold anything, she would just be earning the labor cost.

Thinking this, Wei Lan picked up her electric carving knife and continued carving.

It wasn’t until nearly eleven at night that she went to the bathroom to shower and rest.

Lu Zijin also received a call from Wei Ting.

“CEO Lu, I’ve had people check.

These past few days, Wei Lan has only gone to school or worked at the milk tea shop.

She gets off work around six or seven in the evening, then goes home.

Basically the same every day.

She doesn’t go anywhere else.”

Wei Ting said.

“Alright.

You’ve worked hard too.

Rest early.”

Lu Zijin hung up.

She wondered whether she should go to the milk tea shop to find Wei Lan tomorrow.

If she went to find Wei Lan, would her little dog get angry again?

Lu Zijin’s mind was a mess.

She felt that coaxing her little one was much harder than any company matter.

She sighed, took a small box from her bedside drawer, and opened it.

Inside was the little golden dog that Wei Lan had mailed back to her.

Lu Zijin dangled the little golden dog in front of her face.

Her chest ached even more.

She reached out and poked the little golden dog, muttering to it, “When will you stop being angry?

When will you talk to me?

You naughty little dog — don’t you miss me?”

Looking at the little golden dog swaying in her hand, her eyes reddened again.

She really wanted to bury herself in her little dog’s chest and sleep comfortably, just like before.

What exactly did she have to do to get her little dog back?

The more Lu Zijin thought about it, the more anxious she became.

She had never been this anxious even when negotiating business deals worth billions.

A little after nine, she received a call from Li Yan.

Since the incident last time, Lu Zijin hadn’t spoken to those people for a week.

She looked at her phone and directly hung up.

If she hadn’t gone to that damned bar, things between her and Wei Lan wouldn’t have turned out like this.

She didn’t want to deal with those people anymore.

Over on Li Yan’s side, afraid of angering Lu Zijin, she didn’t dare call again after two attempts.

She was still at the bar at the moment.

The man with glasses asked, “Well?

No answer?”

Li Yan shook her head.

“Called twice, both hung up on me.

She must still be angry about what happened last time.”

“I’ve heard some rumors too.

Apparently, people at Lu Corporation worked overtime for almost the whole week last week, and several executives got chewed out by Lu Jie.

What do you think?

Is it possible she was just talking tough last time but actually can’t live without that little alpha?”

The man with glasses continued.

“Who knows?

Anyway, we’d better behave ourselves lately.

If we really piss off Lu Jie, none of us will have it easy.”

Li Yan sighed.

After all, every business in Panyang City had to toe the line with Lu Corporation.

If Lu Zijin really got angry and wanted to go after their family companies, they would all be in trouble.

The group drank their alcohol listlessly, feeling very uneasy.

***

On the weekend, Wei Lan had no classes.

She would go work at the milk tea shop in the morning, from eight to two in the afternoon.

It was now ten in the morning.

More and more customers were coming to buy milk tea.

Wei Lan was so busy that she didn’t even have time to sit down and rest — her hands never stopped moving.

Lu Zijin had Zhou Xiao drive her over.

She entered the milk tea shop and saw that there were already quite a few people inside.

She spotted Wei Lan almost immediately.

The weather was hot now, and her little dog was hurriedly holding a cup and mixing something — a job that clearly looked very exhausting.

Lu Zijin pressed her lips together, feeling sorry for her little dog.

She could have stayed by her side and gotten a monthly allowance of half a million yuan, yet she had still rejected her, choosing to do such tiring work instead.

She sighed and walked up to the counter.

“Give me an iced latte, please.”

“Sure.

Scan here.”

Lu Zijin scanned the code with her phone, but her gaze remained on Wei Lan.

Wei Lan had recognized Lu Zijin’s voice as well.

She glanced over once, then continued working with her head down.

Since it was already over between them, Lu Zijin had nothing to do with her anymore.

After ordering, Lu Zijin didn’t sit down.

Instead, she stood there watching Wei Lan.

Wei Lan must have seen her a long time ago, but she didn’t come over to her — she just kept mixing her milk tea.

Lu Zijin pressed her lips together, remembering what Wei Lan had said to her last time.

She didn’t call out to Wei Lan.

If she called out to her again, Wei Lan might only dislike her more.

So she decided to just wait here for Wei Lan — once her little dog got off work, she would invite her to lunch.

Thus, Lu Zijin found a place to sit.

She drank her latte, but her gaze kept drifting toward Wei Lan.

But as time passed and it turned past twelve, Wei Lan showed no sign of clocking out.

By one o’clock, Lu Zijin couldn’t sit still anymore.

It was already this late, and her little dog still hadn’t eaten.

How could her body handle that?

She went back to the counter, took a deep breath, and then spoke.

“Wei Lan, when do you get off work?

It’s already this late — aren’t you going to eat lunch?”

The crowd had thinned out now.

Hearing Lu Zijin call her name, Wei Lan walked over to the counter.

“CEO Lu, I made myself very clear that day.

Please don’t come looking for me anymore.

Whether I eat or not is my own business and has nothing to do with you.

Don’t come again.”

After saying this, Wei Lan went back to the inner area and continued mixing milk tea.

Lu Zijin hadn’t expected to be turned down by Wei Lan again.

She had waited from ten in the morning until one o’clock, and Wei Lan hadn’t given her so much as a good look.

Her own mood wasn’t good either.

The frustration that had been building up over the past two weeks was immediately ignited by those words.

She stood there firmly, frowning at Wei Lan.

“Haven’t you thrown your tantrum long enough?

It was just a small matter.

I’ve already apologized to you.

It’s been nearly two weeks — are you going to keep this up?”

Wei Lan hadn’t expected Lu Zijin to say this.

Her face pale, she said a few words to the shop manager, then turned to Lu Zijin.

“CEO Lu, if you have something to say, let’s talk outside.

Don’t interfere with our shop’s business.”

“Ha.

Fine.”

Lu Zijin turned and walked out of the shop.

Wei Lan, her face pale, followed her out.

Lu Zijin walked for a distance before stopping.

Wei Lan stopped as well.

Lu Zijin turned to look at Wei Lan.

Her chest rose and fell several times before she spoke.

“What exactly do you want?”

Wei Lan’s face grew even paler.

She looked at Lu Zijin, her eyes slightly reddening.

So Lu Zijin had always thought she was just throwing a tantrum.

Wei Lan forced a bitter smile onto her face.

Was this how poorly she thought of her?

She gritted her teeth, holding back her tears.

Wei Lan looked directly at Lu Zijin.

“I don’t want anything.

I just hope you won’t come looking for me again.

I believe you can see for yourself — you and I are from two different worlds.

CEO Lu, I know you’re very wealthy, and you probably think it’s nothing to mess around with me.

But I am a human being.

I don’t want to be your plaything anymore.

I’m sorry.

Please don’t see me again.”

Lu Zijin was also angered by Wei Lan’s attitude.

She had never begged anyone so humbly in her life, and she had come to apologize several times now — Wei Lan was the first.

Yet Wei Lan had rejected her again and again.

Lu Zijin felt that Wei Lan was being rather ungrateful.

“Fine.

That’s what you say.

Do you think you’re the only alpha whose pheromones match mine?

It’s not like I can’t live without you.

I’ll go back right now and have someone screen for candidates.

You’d better believe that by this afternoon, I’ll find an alpha whose pheromones match mine.

As long as I offer enough money, plenty of people will be willing to play with me.”

Lu Zijin vented all her frustrations.

Of course, she was just saying these things to anger Wei Lan.

She had a cleanliness fetish and thought alphas were dirty anyway — how could she possibly find someone else?

But pushed to this point, she just wanted to say something to let off steam.

Wei Lan had barely been able to hold back her tears until now.

But after hearing these words from Lu Zijin, her tears fell like a broken string — unstoppable.

In Lu Zijin’s heart, she was no different from any other alpha.

As long as their pheromones matched, Lu Zijin would treat anyone the same.

Wei Lan hadn’t eaten lunch.

Her head felt dizzy as she took two steps back, her face frighteningly pale.

Numbly, she nodded at Lu Zijin.

“Do whatever you want.”

Then she turned and ran back into the shop.

Seeing Wei Lan cry, Lu Zijin’s eyes also reddened.

She hadn’t meant to come here and fight — she had wanted to take Wei Lan out to eat.

Now everything was ruined because of what she had just said.

Wei Lan would surely be even less willing to see her again.

She wanted to chase after her, but years of being in a high position wouldn’t allow her to do that.

She had already been good enough to Wei Lan.

Why wasn’t she content?
