Chapter 118: Side Story 14 – When Pride Finally Learns to Bend

Lu Zijin gazed in the direction of the milk tea shop for a long time without looking away.

Her lips pressed tightly together.

In the end, she walked back to her car.

Lu Zijin thought that maybe she should give Wei Lan some space.

Perhaps after a while, Wei Lan would calm down on her own.

Back at the shop, Wei Lan still had red eyes.

She returned to the counter and continued with her work.

The other shop assistants didn’t dare ask too many questions.

At two in the afternoon, Wei Lan got off work and had a simple bowl of noodles at a nearby noodle shop.

Then she returned to her apartment.

She found a large backpack, wrapped her Xiuyu jade carvings in cloth, and also prepared a soft cloth for setting up her stall.

After grabbing a small folding stool, she headed out.

Although she had been very upset after hearing Lu Zijin’s words that morning, life still had to go on.

She had suddenly lost two part-time jobs, so of course she needed to make money.

Wei Lan didn’t have a car, and she couldn’t bear to take a taxi, so she had to carry her large bag and take the bus.

After five bus stops, Wei Lan got off at a large jade market on the eastern side of Panyang City.

She had asked around — because this market was outdoors, the stall fees were very low, within her affordable range.

Wei Lan asked the neighboring stall owner to make sure no one had set up here before, then started arranging her stall.

She spread two layers of bed sheets on the ground and began slowly laying out her carved Xiuyu pieces.

The neighboring stall owner was a man in his sixties.

Seeing Wei Lan lay out a bunch of low-value Xiuyu jade, he kept shaking his head.

“Why didn’t you get some Hetian jade?

These things of yours aren’t worth much.

You won’t get a good price.”

Wei Lan knew that, of course.

She just smiled and said, “I don’t have the money for good materials right now.

I have to practice with these first.”

She arranged the jade pieces neatly as she spoke.

After finishing, she took out her small stool and sat down to start selling.

There weren’t many people at the jade market at this hour, but there were plenty of online live-streaming hosts walking back and forth with their phones.

One host came to Wei Lan’s stall and asked, “How much are these?”

“Small pieces are thirty each, larger ones fifty.

But that’s my regular price.

I’ve never sold jade online before.”

Wei Lan said.

She knew that selling online could make more money, but it was also more troublesome — returns and exchanges would be a hassle.

The host was a woman in her thirties.

Seeing that Wei Lan was pretty, she sat down at Wei Lan’s stall and asked with a smile, “Do you mind if I film you too?

I’ll sit here and rest for a bit — it’s hot — and while I’m at it, I can explain to you how we hosts source our goods.”

Wei Lan didn’t really mind being on camera.

She needed money right now, and it would be good to learn a bit about how these hosts operated.

“I don’t mind.

Go ahead.”

Hearing that Wei Lan didn’t mind, the woman immediately grabbed a small camp stool and sat down in front of Wei Lan’s stall.

“Everyone, come take a look at this stall with me.

The stall owner is a young lady.

The goods she sells are Xiuyu jade — very affordable.

Small pieces are thirty, larger ones fifty.

If anyone needs something, you can buy them for fun.

They’re cheap anyway.”

As she spoke, the woman scanned the goods on the ground with her phone, then panned to Wei Lan’s face.

Hers wasn’t a big livestream — only a few dozen live viewers.

Before, only about a dozen people were chatting in the comments.

But after seeing Wei Lan’s face, her livestream exploded.

[Wow, this jade-selling lady is way too pretty.]

[Right.

She looks like she’s barely wearing any makeup either.

Her bare face is this stunning?]

[Host, we’ll buy the jade.

Just sit here with the young lady a while longer and let us keep looking at her.]

[Yeah, yeah, let us see more of her.]

The woman immediately laughed.

“Fine, I’ll let you guys look at the goods first.”

The woman had only stayed at Wei Lan’s stall because Wei Lan’s looks could draw viewers to her stream — after all, roaming hosts like her usually had familiar stall owners they worked with, and they typically sold from those regulars.

She picked up a few jade pieces and held them under the camera.

She herself paused for a moment.

“Where did you get a master to carve these?

The craftsmanship is really good.”

Wei Lan smiled and replied, “I carved them myself.

I just mess around with it in my free time.”

“You carved these yourself?”

The woman then spoke to her phone again.

“Family, did you hear that?

This young lady carved all these herself.

Do you want to buy?

Do you want to buy?”

The comments exploded like a boiling pot — all of them saying “buy, buy, buy!”

So the woman lined up the viewers in her livestream — those who typed “1” first got to choose first.

Wei Lan was stunned.

In no time at all, the woman had cleared out all the small pendants at thirty and fifty yuan from her stall.

Wei Lan’s face was full of smiles.

She had seventy-six small pieces at thirty yuan each, thirty-five plaques and pendants at fifty yuan each, and ten larger hand-held pieces that were also bought up.

That meant she had earned 5,030 yuan in total.

Even if some items were returned, she would still make a profit.

More importantly, the raw materials she had used to carve these small things had only cost her a little over a hundred yuan.

This was far more profitable than working at the milk tea shop.

Wei Lan was happy, and the woman was happy too.

Hetian jade at the jade market was too expensive — the people in her livestream couldn’t afford those high prices.

She had sold over five thousand yuan worth of goods today, earning herself a five-hundred-yuan commission.

While packing the items, the woman smiled and asked, “Will you be coming back tomorrow?”

Wei Lan nodded.

“Probably around two or three in the afternoon.”

“Great.

I’ll come back and stream again then.”

“Okay.”

Wei Lan smiled back.

The old man next to her was stunned.

What?

She sold everything?

And managed to make that much money off this pile of cheap Xiuyu jade?

It was now a little past five.

Wei Lan’s stall was completely empty.

She packed up her bed sheets and prepared to look for some Hetian jade scraps at the jade market, hoping to have more variety on her stall tomorrow.

At the same time, Xiao Nanyan, who had been watching the livestream, became interested in Wei Lan.

She was the owner of the largest jade processing market in Panyang City, running the original source factory for jade processing.

Lately, she had been looking for live-streaming hosts.

She had auditioned several newcomers, but none of them worked out — they always fell short.

In the afternoon, she was casually watching local livestreams on a short-video app when she stumbled upon Wei Lan.

She then witnessed the host sell all of Wei Lan’s goods in a single afternoon.

It wasn’t because the host was particularly persuasive — it was mainly because Wei Lan’s face attracted so many people to stay in the livestream and buy.

Xiao Nanyan immediately realized why the hosts at her company couldn’t move product — the problem was their looks.

Even if traffic was pushed to them, they couldn’t hold onto it.

Her eyes lit up.

She needed to find a way to sign this girl to her company.

Xiao Nanyan planned to stake out the jade market tomorrow, since she didn’t know Wei Lan’s exact schedule.

As for Wei Lan — now that she finally had a bit of money — she spent five hundred yuan at the jade market on some scraps.

The material looked decent, but the only thing she could make from it was small plaques or pendants.

She couldn’t afford the big, high-quality pieces.

After buying the materials, Wei Lan didn’t rush home.

She went to an electric bike shop nearby.

She wanted to buy an electric bike, but a new one cost about two thousand yuan — too expensive.

She could only ask if the shop had any used ones for sale.

In the end, she found one — a second-hand electric bike for six hundred yuan.

With a electric bike, things would be much more convenient for her.

She ate a rice bowl outside before heading home.

Once home, Wei Lan started carving jade again.

She still had quite a few Xiuyu pieces at home, but after buying new materials today, she couldn’t wait to start carving.

On Lu Zijin’s side, she was equally busy.

She stayed at the company until after nine, finishing up her work, before returning to the villa.

But after showering, Lu Zijin couldn’t sleep at all.

As soon as she got into bed and closed her eyes, her mind filled with the image of Wei Lan crying that morning.

Her chest felt tight and uncomfortable.

She had only said those things because the conversation had escalated — she hadn’t meant them.

And there was no way she would find someone else.

It was all because she refused to lower her head, and that had only made things worse.

Her little one probably didn’t want to see her at all now.

Lu Zijin sighed.

She decided to wait a few days, until her little dog wasn’t so angry, before apologizing again.

What she had said that morning was very hurtful.

She didn’t know if her little dog would forgive her.

She lay in bed a while longer but still couldn’t sleep.

She wanted to talk to someone about what was happening between her and Wei Lan.

All her so-called friends were fair-weather friends.

Her family members were all scheming against each other over the corporation — though she had kept them all in check — and they were even less reliable.

She didn’t know who to ask anymore, so she called Wei Ting.

Wei Ting had been working overtime along with Lu Zijin.

She had just rested for a short while when she received another call from Lu Zijin.

Wei Ting sighed.

Who wanted to answer a boss’s call in the middle of the night?

But she still picked up.

“CEO Lu?

Is something wrong?”

Lu Zijin sighed and spoke.

“Sorry to bother you so late.

You’ve worked hard this time too.

I’ll add an extra month’s overtime pay for you.”

“No bother at all.

Please go ahead.”

Hearing about overtime pay, Wei Ting’s spirits immediately lifted.

“I have a friend.

She found an alpha with matching pheromones.

At first, she only wanted the alpha to satisfy her needs.

They got along pretty well afterward.

My friend treated that alpha very well too.

But my friend didn’t want to define the relationship, and she ran her mouth — bragging in front of her other friends that she was just playing around with that alpha.

The alpha overheard and angrily broke things off with my friend.

Do you think my friend can win the alpha back?”

Lu Zijin let out what had been weighing on her mind.

Wei Ting had an expression like she had just bitten into a huge, juicy piece of gossip.

She deliberated for a long time but still didn’t dare speak.

This wasn’t some “friend” of CEO Lu — this was clearly Lu Zijin herself.

“CEO Lu, I’m just an employee — I shouldn’t say too much.

Other people’s relationship issues are better left for them to sort out themselves.”

Wei Ting declined tactfully.

“It’s fine.

Just think of it as casual conversation.

I certainly won’t hold it against you.”

Lu Zijin said quickly.

Wei Ting was torn.

But she had been by Lu Zijin’s side since graduating from graduate school.

Other than being a bit aloof, Lu Zijin had actually treated her pretty well — salary, year-end bonus, monthly bonuses — Lu Zijin was quite generous.

She had also seen how Lu Zijin had been these past two weeks.

Alright, she would offer a reminder if she could.

Thinking this, Wei Ting steeled herself and said, “CEO Lu, if that’s the case, then your ‘friend’ is kind of a jerk.

She was with the alpha but didn’t want to define the relationship — isn’t that just using money to toy with her?

If it’s just for fun, that’s one thing.

But if it’s serious, she needs to properly apologize.

And if she wants to win the alpha back, she also needs to decide whether she wants to commit to a real relationship.

If she still just wants to play around, I think she should let the alpha go.”

As soon as Wei Ting finished, she regretted it.

Was she going to get fired?

But after about ten seconds, Lu Zijin replied, “Alright, thank you.

I’ll pass that along to my friend.”

Then Lu Zijin hung up.

Define the relationship?

The reason she hadn’t wanted to define things before was because she was afraid the alpha she found would only be after her money.

She also thought alphas were dirty.

But if it was her little dog, that wasn’t out of the question.

If being girlfriends was what it took, then fine — it wasn’t like she was actually some kind of jerk.

As long as she could win her little dog back, she would make an exception this once.

She would go apologize to Wei Lan in a few days and define the relationship.

That would give her little dog all the security she needed.

She couldn’t bear living without Wei Lan by her side anymore.

Now she could be very sure of her own feelings.

She simply couldn’t live without Wei Lan.
