Chapter 121: Side Story 17 – The Fever of Jealousy

Lu Zijin couldn’t go to the company because of her stomach issues.

She slept groggily through the morning.

Zhang Ma was worried and called Dr. Lin to come over again.

Dr. Lin used a thermometer gun to check Lu Zijin’s temperature and found she had a fever — likely caused by gastroenteritis.

With no other option, Dr. Lin put Lu Zijin on an IV again.

By the afternoon, Lu Zijin felt a little better, but she still had a slight fever.

Dr. Lin prescribed her some medication.

After taking it, Lu Zijin fell back into a deep sleep.

When Lu Zijin woke up again, it was already past four in the afternoon.

Dr. Lin was worried there might be an emergency, so she stayed in the guest room.

After waking up, Lu Zijin still felt empty inside.

She was still somewhat uncomfortable, but much better compared to the middle of the night.

Zhang Ma made Lu Zijin a light vegetable noodle soup.

Lu Zijin ate a bowl, and finally had a bit of energy.

While sleeping, she had a very long dream.

In the dream, Wei Lan was still by her side, just like before.

When she got sick, Wei Lan would hold her in her arms and comfort her.

Even taking medicine, Wei Lan would feed it to her.

The dream had been so real — so real that she could even feel the warmth of Wei Lan’s lips.

But when she woke up, everything was cold again.

There was only herself in the room.

Lu Zijin looked at the bitter pills in front of her, her eyes slightly red.

She suddenly missed Wei Lan terribly.

Even just seeing Wei Lan from afar would put her at ease.

Mechanically, she swallowed the pills, drinking some warm water to wash them down.

Then she started changing her clothes.

When she reached the first floor, Zhang Ma quickly came over.

“CEO Lu, your fever just broke.

Please don’t go to the company today — your body really can’t handle it.”

“Not the company.

I want to go see her.”

Lu Zijin’s face was still pale.

She asked Zhang Ma to have Zhou Xiao drive the car.

Dr. Lin heard the commotion and came out of her room, frowning.

Seeing that Lu Zijin was about to go out, she quickly tried to dissuade her.

“You’re in this condition — where are you going?”

“I’m fine.

I’ll be back in a little while.”

If she didn’t go see Wei Lan today, she would feel even worse later.

“Do whatever you want.”

Dr. Lin sighed.

After all, she was the boss, so she couldn’t say too much.

At worst, she could just put her on another IV when she got back.

So Lu Zijin got into the car.

She had already memorized Wei Lan’s class schedule by heart.

On Monday afternoons, Wei Lan had class and wouldn’t finish until after five.

If she went now, she might run into Wei Lan.

Twenty minutes later, Zhou Xiao parked near the entrance of Panyang University.

Lu Zijin looked out the window at the university gate, hoping to spot Wei Lan among the bustling crowd.

Ten minutes later, she really did see Wei Lan.

Wei Lan walked out of the school gate carrying her crossbody bag.

When Lu Zijin saw Wei Lan, her eyes reddened slightly, but her face still held a smile.

Her little one was still so beautiful.

Her heart felt ticklish.

If only her little one could come home with her right now.

But the next moment, Lu Zijin’s dream shattered.

A stunning omega got out of a nearby Porsche and walked toward Wei Lan.

The woman was wearing a striking red dress, a smile playing on her lips as she approached Wei Lan.

Wei Lan, in turn, walked toward the woman.

They exchanged a few words with smiles, and then Wei Lan followed the woman toward the Porsche.

Lu Zijin stared blankly at the scene before her, tears streaming down her face.

The woman was Xiao Nanyan.

Since when had her little one become so close with Xiao Nanyan?

It was almost six o’clock — why was Xiao Nanyan coming to see Wei Lan at this hour?

Were they going to dinner together?

Or were they going to…

Just thinking about it sent sharp pains through Lu Zijin’s chest.

She pressed her right hand over her heart, but she still couldn’t stop trembling with anguish.

The image of Wei Lan and Xiao Nanyan laughing and chatting together was unbearably glaring.

It shouldn’t be like this.

Her little one should be hers.

How could she laugh and chat with another omega?

Lu Zijin’s emotions became so agitated that her stomach started hurting again.

Her face pale, she sat in the back seat, nearly fainting.

Seeing that Lu Zijin’s condition was worsening, Zhou Xiao quickly said, “CEO Lu, I’d better take you back.

Is your stomach hurting again?”

She started the car, but Lu Zijin stopped her.

“Wait.

Follow that red Porsche.

See where they’re going.”

“But CEO Lu, your health — ”

“I’m fine.

Follow them.”

Lu Zijin, her face pale and clutching her stomach, insisted.

Zhou Xiao had no choice but to keep a distance behind the red Porsche.

Wei Lan, sitting in Xiao Nanyan’s car, had no idea about any of this.

As she drove, Xiao Nanyan smiled and said, “I’m taking you to this little hole-in-the-wall spot.

The storefront might not look like much, but the hotpot there is really good.

You have to reserve a table a day in advance.

You’ll see.”

“Really?

Then I’m definitely going to eat a lot.”

Wei Lan said with a laugh.

She’d been in class all afternoon and was hungry.

“For sure.

Their iced sour plum drink is made with medicinal herbs — it’s very good.

We’ll eat plenty later.”

Xiao Nanyan thought for a moment, then added, “Send me your measurements later.

The gala is in a few days, so I’ll have someone prepare your gown and everything.”

“Okay.

I’ll send them now.”

Wei Lan took out her phone and sent Xiao Nanyan her measurements via WeChat.

Twenty minutes later, Xiao Nanyan parked in the garage of a nearby hotel.

She and Wei Lan walked together toward the alley across the street.

Watching the two of them enter the alley, Zhou Xiao said, “CEO Lu, that alley is too narrow.

We can’t drive in there.”

“What’s inside that alley?”

Lu Zijin asked.

Zhou Xiao hadn’t been there either, but she looked it up on her phone’s map.

“It looks like a restaurant street — seems pretty popular.”

Lu Zijin watched the two figures disappear into the alley, her heart aching with bitterness.

Her little one was going to dinner with another omega.

She stared at the alley for nearly ten minutes before finally saying, “Let’s go back.”

“Yes, CEO Lu.”

Zhou Xiao quickly started the car and drove away.

Lu Zijin had no other choice.

If she went after Wei Lan now, Wei Lan would only dislike her more.

All she could do was stay away from Wei Lan for the next few days.

After some time had passed and Wei Lan no longer hated her as much, she could slowly approach her again.

Even though she was going crazy with jealousy, she couldn’t force Wei Lan.

After returning home, Lu Zijin kept clutching her stomach.

Dr. Lin’s face turned sour.

She had been fine in the afternoon — how did she get worse again after just one trip out?

No help for it — after Lu Zijin ate a little something, Dr. Lin put her on another IV.

Before leaving, Dr. Lin couldn’t help but advise, “Don’t drink alcohol anytime soon.

Don’t overwork yourself either.

And make sure to eat your meals on time.”

“Alright.

I understand.”

Lu Zijin lay on the bed, her face pale, and said.

She still had the IV in — it would take about an hour to finish.

Dr. Lin didn’t want to stay in the same room as her boss, so she planned to come back later.

Lu Zijin stared blankly at the IV tube above her.

She felt drowsy and soon fell asleep.

When she woke up again, Dr. Lin was adding fever-reducing medicine to her IV — her temperature had gone up again.

In any case, it wasn’t until nearly midnight that Lu Zijin’s condition finally stabilized.

On the other side, Wei Lan followed Xiao Nanyan into the hotpot place in the alley.

Xiao Nanyan had reserved a table a day in advance, so she had gotten a private room for four.

They went inside and sat down.

Xiao Nanyan ordered two soup bases — spicy beef fat and tomato.

Soon, all kinds of ingredients were brought to the table.

Wei Lan was curious.

She had just looked at the menu — the vegetables and meats were average for a hotpot place.

How had a big CEO like Xiao Nanyan found this cheap street-side shop?

“How did you find this place?”

Wei Lan asked.

Xiao Nanyan smiled at her, took a sip of the iced sour plum drink, and then said, “Because it’s delicious, of course.

I’m not one of those ‘rich and stupid’ types.

Sometimes, high-end restaurants aren’t as good as these little street-side dives.

Besides, this place has a huge customer flow, so all the ingredients are fresh.

You’ll see when you taste it.”

“Alright, then I won’t be polite.”

At these prices, even if the two of them ate until they were stuffed, it would only cost three or four hundred yuan.

Compared to fancy restaurants, Wei Lan actually preferred places with a down-to-earth vibe.

Just like Xiao Nanyan as a person — Wei Lan didn’t feel any distance when she was with her, because Xiao Nanyan normally had no airs and liked to joke around with her.

Soon, plate after plate of vegetables and meat were brought out.

Xiao Nanyan skillfully put the lamb into the spicy pot.

“The lamb at this place is very tender.

Try it — it should be about ready.”

The lamb was scalded briefly in the boiling hot pot and quickly changed color.

Wei Lan immediately picked up her chopsticks, rolled the lamb around in her dipping sauce, and popped it into her mouth — full of flavor.

“Mmm, delicious.”

Wei Lan nodded.

“Good, right?

In a couple of days, after the gala, I’ll take you to a grilled fish place.

Their grilled fish is also excellent.”

Xiao Nanyan was also very happy.

She didn’t like hanging out with the rich second-gen crowd in her social circle, so whenever she went out, she could only drag her assistant along.

But which employee wanted to spend time with their boss every day?

Now, though, things were better — she had met Wei Lan and made a friend, and could drag her along to eat and drink in the future.

The two ate and chatted.

After ten at night, Xiao Nanyan drove Wei Lan back to her place, then went home herself.

For the next couple of days, the various jade factories under Xiao Nanyan’s group worked overtime to prepare inventory.

Wei Lan also joined the team in selecting products.

In the afternoon of the third day, Wei Lan skipped her last class and went early to Xiao Nanyan’s place.

Putting on a gown and doing makeup would take quite a long time, and both she and Xiao Nanyan needed to eat something first.

Meanwhile, Lu Zijin was doing the same.

Her health had mostly recovered over the past few days.

Originally, she hadn’t wanted to attend this charity gala, but since the host was the government, she couldn’t really refuse.

So she had reluctantly had someone prepare a gown for her.

In essence, this kind of gala was just various groups bidding on items, with all the proceeds going to charity.
