Chapter 41: Confrontation Outside the Exam Hall

The Shen family’s car was parked by the roadside, with over twenty minutes left until the exam ended. Shen Zheming sat by the window, leaning back and resting his eyes.

The driver who chauffeured Shen Zheming today had worked for the Shen family for many years. He had often driven Shen Zheming to and from school since middle school. More than just a subordinate, he was like an elder who had watched Shen Zheming grow up.

Through the window, the driver’s gaze swept across the school entrance.

“Aren’t most of the people taking this contest college students? There’s actually a parent waiting outside?”

Shen Zheming’s eyelids flickered. He glanced out the window.

Today was the exam, and the school entrance was cordoned off with police tape by security. There were few people around, just some taxis waiting for fares and ordinary passersby from the neighborhood.

Only one man, wearing a dark brown cotton coat, was squatting beside a stone pillar at the school gate, smoking a cigarette. He glanced toward the school every now and then.

The man had a heavy, slightly hunched back and a rough, sturdy frame. Even from a distance, one could sense a murky, worldly hostility emanating from him.

“Wait here for me.” Shen Zheming suddenly set aside the tablet on his lap.

The driver turned back in surprise. “Young Master, do you know this man?”

Shen Zheming’s expression darkened. “I’ve seen him.”

In the files sent back by the subordinates he had once dispatched to investigate Ning County.

Several cigarette butts lay scattered at Lu Jinguo’s feet.

This was already his fifth cigarette. Why wasn’t the person coming out yet?

Beside him was a carton of milk bought on discount because it was near its expiration date, and a bag of oranges from a nearby fruit stall.

Lu Jinguo spat and rubbed his hands together.

Damn, this capital city weather is really cold. The wind could split your face open.

Just as his legs were going numb from squatting and he was about to stand up and stamp his feet, someone grabbed him by the collar of his coat.

The person came from behind and had a lot of strength. Lu Jinguo thought it was a debt collector and his legs went weak with fear.

Until he was dragged into a little-used alley next to the school and thrown mercilessly against the wall.

Lu Jinguo looked up in panic and discovered that the person who had dragged him here was not a violent debt collector, but a tall, handsome young man he had never seen before.

“Lu Jinguo?”

The stranger clearly called out his name.

Lu Jinguo was suspicious. With his back against the wall, he looked the newcomer up and down. “You know me? Who the hell are you?”

Shen Zheming glanced at his phone screen. There were still over ten minutes before the examinees inside would come out.

Shen Zheming asked coldly, “You came to see Lu Shi?”

Lu Jinguo’s sallow, bluish face flickered with surprise. He wiped his rough, stubbly chin. “How do you know?”

Before, the Chen family had given him a hush money payment to prevent the media from taking a bad turn. After paying off his original gambling debts, there was still a considerable sum left. But he didn’t believe he was down on his luck. He wanted to turn things around with the remaining money, so he continued to spend all his time in casinos. Unexpectedly, he soon lost everything and was in debt again.

So last month, Lu Jinguo followed Wang Xiuzhi to the capital.

That woman Wang Xiuzhi insisted on reuniting with her biological son and found a way to sneak into the Chen family. But that son they had given away had no conscience and didn’t acknowledge her at all.

His little scheme to get some benefits from his biological son fell through. Furious, he immediately wanted to cause trouble at the Chen residence. Wang Xiuzhi desperately held him back, not letting him go and affect Chen Youxuan. He beat her.

But when he arrived at the gate of the Chen family’s residential complex, the security guard wouldn’t let him in.

Chen Youxuan was chauffeured everywhere all day. He couldn’t get close, couldn’t even exchange a word.

At his wit’s end, with the money on him almost gone, he came up with the idea of finding Lu Shi.

That one was his son, but this one had also once been his son.

Lu Jinguo had followed Lu Shi for over a week and observed that Lu Shi had neither a driver nor bodyguards. He was the only person Lu Jinguo could easily approach.

Today Lu Shi came here to take some exam, and he thought it was a good opportunity, so he followed him.

Shen Zheming: “What do you want with him? Money?”

His intentions exposed, Lu Jinguo’s small eyes darted around.

Even though he wasn’t good at judging people, he could tell from this young man’s demeanor that he was wealthy.

Shen Zheming said, “If you want money, go to Chen Qiming.”

Mentioning Chen Qiming made Lu Jinguo angry.

This young man in front of him knew so much about Lu Shi and the Chen family, and even recognized him.

Lu Jinguo relaxed a little and spat viciously on the ground. “You think I haven’t tried? Chen Qiming is a tightwad. He owns such a big company, but he wouldn’t even lend me a hundred thousand. He even threatened to sue me.”

He then lifted his chin at Shen Zheming, his ugly features fully exposed. “So I had to come to my son for some money.”

The air was silent for a moment.

A layer of sarcasm rose in Shen Zheming’s eyes.

He is not your son.

“Years of alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The news whitewashed you as a responsible, dependable man. What, read it so many times you actually think you’re that person? And you still have the nerve to ask for money?”

Lu Jinguo was stunned.

This person not only knew everything, but also seemed to know the truth about Lu Shi’s past.

Combined with the fact that this young man seemed to be waiting for Lu Shi at the gate just like him, Lu Jinguo narrowed his small eyes as if he understood something.

“You’re not his boyfriend, are you? Not bad. This kid really is something, raised by me, doing so well for himself.”

Anyway, there was no one on this road. No one would hear what he said.

Lu Jinguo laughed shamelessly, revealing his tobacco-stained yellow teeth. His gaze at Shen Zheming turned greasy and narrow, and his words were brazen and confident.

“Why can’t I ask him for money? I raised him for almost eighteen years. Did I not give him food or clothes? A father teaching his son a lesson is only natural. Besides, isn’t he alive and well now? Now that he’s made it big, turned into a phoenix, what’s wrong with letting me have a few scraps?”

“To put it bluntly, if I hadn’t gambled and owed debts, he might never have been found and brought back! He wouldn’t be where he is today! If you don’t want me to bother him, then you pay up for him.”

As his words fell, Lu Jinguo made a move to reach out.

Suddenly, his expression changed. He opened his mouth but couldn’t speak.

S-ranked pheromones, like an invisible hand, clamped around his throat like iron pincers. His face immediately flushed red, his chest tightened, and his breathing turned rapid.

Gradually, Lu Jinguo couldn’t hold on.

With a thud, he knelt down, supporting himself against the wall. His hands kept scratching his own short, thick neck, and he squeezed out a few words with difficulty: “You… you’re k-killing me, killing me…”

To stop the other from releasing more pheromones, Lu Jinguo reached into his pocket and fumbled.

But he lost his grip when pulling it out, and it clattered to the ground.

This guy had actually brought a knife with him.

But in the face of absolute hierarchical suppression, all struggle was futile.

Lu Jinguo retched reflexively, unable to straighten up.

In his field of vision, those clean sneakers moved. The soles crushed the fine gravel on the road, making a slight crunching sound.

Shen Zheming had little patience to begin with and didn’t want to waste any more words.

With one step, the sneaker kicked aside the small knife beside Lu Jinguo’s hand. Then, the sole of that shoe accurately stepped on Lu Jinguo’s right hand, the one that had just reached for the knife.

“!!!”

For a moment, Lu Jinguo felt like his fingers were about to be crushed. The pain made his eyes bulge, his face contort, and drool drip from the corner of his mouth. But because he was suppressed by the pheromones, he couldn’t even scream.

“Chen Qiming didn’t dare sue you, otherwise he wouldn’t have given you hush money to smooth things over. The time and money he’d lose taking you to court would be far more than just sending you cash.”

Shen Zheming’s eyes were cast down calmly as he increased the pressure under his foot.

The tread pattern on the sole ground over Lu Jinguo’s fingers one by one.

Lu Jinguo felt a powerful intimidation that stirred fear deep in his soul, making him tremble uncontrollably.

“I’m warning you: go to Chen Qiming. Don’t come near him again.

“He has nothing to do with you anymore. Understand?”
