Chapter 21: When a Joke Goes Too Far

Ye Nuo rested her chin on her hand, looking back and forth between Yaqi and Liu Ya. Slowly, she puffed out her cheeks, let out a sigh, stood up, walked to the door, and quietly called Liu Ya over.

“Liu Ya, come here.”

“Hmm? What’s wrong?”

“Oh, just come here!”

“Honestly…”

With that, Liu Ya got up and walked over, but before leaving, she didn’t forget to remind Yaqi:

“You keep working for now. I’ll be back in a bit. Don’t slack off! Or else you’re in trouble!”

“I… I know!”

Yaqi watched her with some dissatisfaction. As the door closed, her tense body instantly slumped, and she collapsed onto the table with a sigh.

(Seriously… a demon! Liu Ya treats me like a kid! Sigh… and there’s so much left…)

(I’m so sleepy. Maybe I’ll take a quick nap? Just a little… after all, sharpening the axe doesn’t delay the woodcutting!)

Yaqi looked up at the door, pricked up her ears to listen carefully. Confirming there was no sound outside, she lazily found a comfortable position and lay down on the table. Soon, she was lightly snoring.

Ye Nuo led Liu Ya to the stairwell corner on the east side of the activity building. After confirming no one was around, she grinned mischievously and said,

“Liu Ya, be honest with me! What’s your relationship with her? Do you like her?”

“Huh? Wh-why are you suddenly asking about that…”

“Come on, Liu Ya is called the goddess by all the girls in school. For her to treat a transfer student like this, don’t you think it’s weird?”

“Like Xueqin said, if there’s nothing fishy, that would be strange. Spill it! What’s going on?”

“Oh! I already told you, she’s my enemy! I’m just taking revenge…”

“…”

Listening to Liu Ya’s explanation that sounded like she was fooling a child, Ye Nuo stared at her expressionlessly.

“Liu Ya, if you’re going to be like this, I’ll have to reconsider future novels…”

“Hey you…!”

(Dammit! Threatening me with novels… But good novels of this genre are really hard to find, and only Ye Nuo can get them…)

(I’m right in the middle of an exciting part in this one. I should have just borrowed both books from the start…)

(And forget about the novels for now. The main thing is I can’t directly say I like Sister Yaqi, right?)

(I haven’t even explained the Xinyu thing yet, and now this. Even though Ye Nuo knows the ins and outs, she’ll still have some opinions about me, right…)

(Gongyu is also up to something. I’m in a delicate position now, I can’t afford any more complications! It’s one thing if it affects me, but if it affects Sister Yaqi, that would be a huge problem…)

This negotiation was undoubtedly a complete victory for Ye Nuo. She precisely pinched Liu Ya’s weak spot, forcing her to obediently compromise.

“What? Are you going to say it or not?”

“I…”

“Oh, I heard that in the next volume, the female lead gets pushed down, and the second female lead is right there watching…”

“You! Why are you spoiling it!… Oh, fine! She’s just my enemy! Really nothing…”

Liu Ya’s face flushed red, she had long lost her usual composure, waving her hands around randomly. Seeing this, Ye Nuo complained with some displeasure,

“What’s wrong with you! If you like her, just like her. What’s so hard to say? You know me, I wouldn’t say anything to you. Why are you being so distant…”

“…That… that won’t work either.”

Liu Ya hesitated, then shyly turned her head away. This cute reaction immediately sparked a wicked idea in Ye Nuo.

(Oh-ho! Since that’s the case…)

A sly smile curled at the corner of Ye Nuo’s mouth. She spoke ingratiatingly,

“Since she’s your enemy, as your good friend, it should be fine for me to help you out, right?”

“Huh? Help with what?”

“Help you vent your anger, of course. I’m great at punishing people!”

“Ah… ah? I can handle it myself…”

“Mm? Why are you being so polite? Is there some secret you can’t tell me?”

As she spoke, Ye Nuo leaned closer to Liu Ya, locking her with a sharp, small gaze.

“Uh… do whatever you want! The more miserable she is, the happier I am! Yeah… right… whatever you like! Okay?”

“Oh~ really? I can do whatever I want?”

“Re-really!”

“Mm… alright then. I won’t hold back. Leave it to me!”

“You… fine, whatever!”

“Hehe, okay. Let’s go back.”

***

After that, the two returned to the student council room. When they pulled open the door, they saw Yaqi sleeping soundly on the table, snoring.

The two looked at each other. Liu Ya sighed helplessly and was about to go wake her, but Ye Nuo stepped forward first. She picked up a stack of reports from the table, rolled them tightly into a tube, slowly raised it, and swung it down at Yaqi’s head.

“Ah!”

Yaqi cried out in pain, clutching her head. Liu Ya was so shocked by the sight that her jaw nearly hit the floor. Recovering quickly, she rushed forward and snatched the weapon from Ye Nuo’s hand.

“What are you doing!”

Liu Ya demanded angrily. Ye Nuo just glanced at her indifferently, ignoring her. She turned back to look down at Yaqi like a queen, her face cold and serious, and said sternly,

“Tang Yaqi, is the student council a place for you to sleep? Did you finish the task I gave you? Huh?”

After recovering, Yaqi looked up weakly at Ye Nuo.

“I… I was too sleepy… I couldn’t help it, I just dozed off for a bit… I’m sorry…”

“That’s your problem! If you want to sleep, go home! This isn’t a place for you to sleep!”

Having said that, Ye Nuo turned around and went back to her seat. She didn’t look up or open her eyes, just left Yaqi hanging there.

Yaqi hung her head in shame, her hands tightly gripping her skirt, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes. She looked like an abandoned baby rabbit that hadn’t been weaned, pitiful and helpless.

Liu Ya felt uncomfortable watching. She never expected Ye Nuo to go this far! But for the sake of the bigger picture, she lowered her hand, which had just been raised, bit her lip, and silently returned to her seat.

The friendly and harmonious student council room fell into a deathly silence.

Liu Ya couldn’t concentrate on her work at all. Her attention was completely on the two of them, her eyes flickering back and forth between Ye Nuo and Yaqi.

(This Ye Nuo… she’s gone too far! Is it because of what I said earlier? But I didn’t allow her to go this far! How could she hit Sister Yaqi!)

Liu Ya gripped her pen tightly, staring angrily at Ye Nuo. Ye Nuo noticed, but pretended not to care and continued working.

The three of them remained silent, not saying a word.

After a while, Yaqi stood up and walked to Ye Nuo’s desk, handing over the organized forms with both hands.

“Ye Nuo, I’ve finished the statistics… Can you take a look?”

Yaqi’s voice was weak and soft, almost inaudible.

Ye Nuo didn’t rush to take them. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, raised an eyebrow, and looked her up and down. Only when she saw Yaqi’s slightly trembling hands did she clear her throat, sit up straight, and reach out to take them.

“…”

“Ca-can I go?”

Ye Nuo put down the reports and smiled at her. Yaqi sighed in relief and was about to leave, but Ye Nuo suddenly threw the reports in her face.

“You useless thing! What is this? The calligraphy club can apply for ten thousand yuan in funding? Do you want to add a few more zeros?”

“And what is the Go club doing applying for floral supplies? Can’t you do anything right! What have you been doing!”

Yaqi quickly crouched down to pick up the reports and check them, only to find that her records were completely wrong.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I might have dozed off… I didn’t mean to…”

Ye Nuo continued to relentlessly criticize.

“Honestly, how did you even get into this school? What level are you at? Can’t even handle such a simple task?”

“Don’t think that just because Liu Ya brought you into the student council, you can slack off openly. That won’t work with me!”

“I… I don’t…”

Yaqi’s voice trembled slightly as she slowly lowered her head.

“…?!… Sister Yaqi!”

“…Huh?”

In the quiet room, droplets of water pattered onto the crumpled paper. Liu Ya immediately stood up. Ye Nuo also realized something was wrong. The stern and severe expression on her face instantly turned panicked.

“Hey… this…”

“Waaaah…”

Big teardrops kept rolling down Yaqi’s cheeks. Despite trying hard to hold back, sobs escaped from between her lips, and her body trembled slightly.

“Sister Yaqi…”

“Ah… um… Yaqi, I…”

Yaqi covered her mouth and rushed out the door, leaving behind the tear-soaked reports scattered on the floor of the student council room.

Staring at the empty hallway, Liu Ya was stunned. After the last sob faded away in the corridor, she turned around and walked angrily to Ye Nuo. Her face was red with rage, and she shouted at her,

“Ye Nuo, what are you doing! What did Sister Yaqi do to deserve this?”

“I… but… didn’t you say I could do whatever I wanted? I… I was just joking… I didn’t mean it!”

“Some joke! I… I said whatever you wanted, but… you’re humiliating her! How could you!”

Liu Ya’s voice grew louder. Ye Nuo was cowed by the shouting and realized she had stepped on a landmine.

In her memory, she had never seen Liu Ya angry. She had imagined what it would be like, but now that she was the target, all she wanted was to run away.

“I… I got a bit carried away… I’m sorry, Liu Ya! I’m really sorry!”

“Why are you telling me! Go tell her!”

“I…”

“Honestly!”

With that, Liu Ya chased after Yaqi. Ye Nuo panicked, unsure whether to follow or not. After thinking it over, she decided to stay put and not cause more trouble.
