Chapter 49: Rainy Night Confessions

“Gongyu, try it. How is it?”

“Mm!”

Gongyu smiled slightly, looked down, scooped up a spoonful of potatoes, and brought it to her mouth to savor carefully.

The potatoes were savory with a hint of sweetness, incredibly delicious. She had never imagined potatoes could taste this good.

“Mmm, it’s good! Yaqi, you’re amazing!”

As she spoke, Gongyu put the spoon in her mouth, licked off the remaining sauce, then mixed the rice into the soup and took another big bite.

“Mmm!”

“Thanks!” Yaqi grinned.

“But I’m a bit surprised. You can even fix a water heater, but you can’t cook?”

“Uh… everyone has their strengths!”

“I see~ hehe…”

“Hey, Yaqi, are you making fun of me?”

“Not at all~”

The two ate and chatted, laughing and talking. At one point, Yaqi noticed the photos on the TV cabinet. They seemed to be pictures of Gongyu with another girl, some from childhood and some from recent years. There were about five or six arranged on the cabinet.

“Hmm? Gongyu, who are those with you?”

“Hmm?”

Yaqi glanced over. Gongyu followed her gaze and understood what she meant.

“Oh, that’s Xinyu.”

“Oh!”

Yaqi forgot about her food and ran to the TV cabinet, crouching down to look closely.

“Ah, there’s nothing interesting to see.”

“Really? No way. Honestly, both of you were so cute as kids. And you’re both beautiful now.”

“Um… Yaqi…”

Gongyu shyly lowered her head, stared at her rice, and took another big bite.

“Oh, right, Gongyu. You haven’t told me about your childhood!”

“Hah, you still remember?”

“Of course. Oh, also, how did you and Xinyu meet?”

“Hey, that’s two things. That’s a bit unfair.”

“Hmm… then I’ll make you breakfast tomorrow too!”

“Pfft…”

Yaqi turned her head and smiled at her. Gongyu sighed helplessly, then smiled and began to tell her story.

Young Gongyu wasn’t good at studying and loved playing games. She was the kind of girl who stayed at home, somewhat introverted. During the day at school, she ignored everyone.

Only when she got home did she become her true self, letting loose on her computer and phone.

She met Xinyu in elementary school, during a physical education class.

In class, the teacher had something to do temporarily and let the students play freely on the playground. Everyone else naturally found their friends, playing ball and messing around. Only the unsociable Gongyu was left out.

Although a little disappointed, Gongyu didn’t think much of it. She walked to a nearby tree shade and sat down, planning to wait until class ended.

But soon after, Xinyu also left the class group and silently sat down beside Gongyu, staring blankly at the others playing.

At first, neither spoke. After a long while, Gongyu mustered up the courage to start a conversation. Xinyu responded, and from then on, they got to know each other.

After that, they gradually became close, eventually inseparable, going everywhere together. Since they both liked playing games, Gongyu invited Xinyu to her home, and they often played together all day.

Because Xinyu’s mother was very strict, they usually played games at Gongyu’s house. When they went to Xinyu’s, they could only read novels or doodle in her bedroom.

“Oh, so that’s how you and Xinyu met?”

“Mm.”

Yaqi picked up one from elementary school. The photo showed two little girls laughing happily, hugging each other, full of energy.

“Hmm…”

Yaqi made a small noise with her lips.

“Hmm? What’s wrong?”

“It’s just… hard to imagine. You said you used to be introverted, but now you seem completely different. Can a person change that much?”

Yaqi turned to look at her. Gongyu thought seriously for a moment.

“Mm… I don’t know either. It seems like after my grades improved, people started coming to talk to me. It just… happened naturally? I’m not sure.”

“Oh, I think I kind of understand when you put it that way.”

Yaqi pouted and blinked, then looked back at the photo.

“Hey, so your grades also got better because you met Xinyu, right?”

“Mm…”

Hearing this, Gongyu silently turned around, stirred her rice with the spoon, and said slowly:

“No.”

“Huh? Then…”

“I don’t really remember, but… I think it was because of my father.”

“This… well, I won’t ask then.”

Yaqi put the photo back, returned to her seat, and bowed her head guiltily.

Gongyu slowly looked up. She saw beads of sweat of all sizes on Yaqi’s forehead, her face flushed red from the heat. Then she looked down at the delicious stewed potatoes and smiled silently.

[Yaqi, you’re so gentle…]

“Actually, it’s not like I can’t talk about it.”

“No. Gongyu, if you don’t want to say, it’s fine.”

“Hah. It’s okay. Thank you, Yaqi!”

Gongyu’s expression brightened. She smiled and continued.

“I think my grades started improving after my father passed away.”

“At the time, treating my father’s illness almost drained all our savings. The house I live in now is rented after selling our original home.”

“I’m not complaining. Honestly, as long as my father could get better, nothing else mattered.”

“But things don’t always go as you wish.”

“Gongyu…”

Yaqi watched her quietly, her eyes full of sympathy. Gongyu just waved her hand with a smile.

“After that, my mother went to work in another city to earn money. I didn’t want to be a burden to her, so I thought at least I shouldn’t worry her about my studies.”

“So I studied hard. The school I’m in now, I got in because my scores in the high school entrance exam were in the top hundred in the province, so tuition is free.”

“Every little bit helps!”

“Wow, Gongyu, you’re amazing?”

“Heh, not bad.”

Yaqi’s eyes sparkled with admiration. Recalling her experiences over the years, Gongyu lifted the corners of her mouth with a hint of pride.

“So you went to a co-ed school before?”

“Mm. Honestly, this is my first time at a girls’ school. When I first came, I was completely lost, haha.”

“Right, right? Me too! Especially when I found out that girls can like each other, I was even more shocked!”

“Haha, at first I couldn’t accept it either. But…”

“Hm?”

Yaqi tilted her head curiously and blinked. Gongyu secretly glanced at her, bit her lip, and a blush crept onto her face.

[If everyone was like you, Yaqi, then maybe it wouldn’t be so hard to understand.]

“If it were you, Yaqi, then I wouldn’t mind…”

“Eh?!”

Yaqi’s eyes widened in surprise, her mouth slightly open. Gongyu realized what she had just said and quickly waved her hands in panic.

“No, no, no! I don’t like you like that, Yaqi! I’m just saying, if everyone were as perfect as you, it wouldn’t be strange for someone to like you.”

“Oh, that’s what you meant… haha! You scared me! I thought you were like that too, haha!”

“Haha, yeah. I’m a straight girl. Not happening!”

Gongyu laughed and quickly picked up her spoon to take a few big bites. Yaqi replayed what she said and then whispered a little shyly:

“But you’re exaggerating, Gongyu. Where am I perfect?”

Gongyu cleared her throat and looked up seriously.

“I’m not wrong! You’re gentle, considerate, and you work hard at your studies. Isn’t that perfect?”

“Mm!”

Yaqi shyly lowered her head, twirling her hair with her fingers, her face bright red. She scooped up a piece of potato and took a small bite. Gongyu covered her mouth and stifled a laugh, then continued eating.

The sound of rain was so prominent in the quiet night, but at this moment, the two of them could only hear each other. They talked about this and that, speaking freely.

It was just a simple meal, but they ate for an hour. Gongyu herself found it incredible. Even with Xinyu, she had never felt so at ease. It felt like rolling on a ball of cotton, relaxed and happy.

Full and satisfied, Gongyu didn’t wait for Yaqi to speak. She took the initiative to gather the dishes and bring them to the kitchen. Yaqi followed, wanting to help, but Gongyu firmly refused. She grabbed Yaqi by the shoulders and steered her back to the sofa, telling her to sit still.

Since they had originally agreed, Yaqi had no choice but to obey. She sat obediently, swinging her legs, and turned her gaze to the photos again, smiling unconsciously. They seemed specially arranged, from left to right, from childhood to the present.

But after looking twice, Yaqi’s smile faltered. Because in the photos, aside from Gongyu’s smile which remained the same, Xinyu’s smile increasingly gave off an indescribable feeling.

[Xinyu… why does she seem unhappy?]

“Yaqi~!”

“Huh?”

Gongyu popped her head out from the kitchen after cleaning up. Yaqi was startled and quickly stood up.

“What is it? You scared me… hehe…”

“That’s the point, haha!”

“Ugh… seriously… what’s up?”

“Oh, I was just going to say, sit for a while longer. I’ll wipe the table, and we can do homework here.”

“Oh, okay. I’ll help too!”

“Hey, no, you don’t need to. I’m already grateful you made dinner. If you help again, I’ll feel really embarrassed.”

“Come on, it’s not that exaggerated.”

“No interfering~!”

Gongyu crossed her arms and smiled at her. Yaqi sighed helplessly and shook her head.

“Fine, fine. I’ll leave it to you then~”

“No problem!”

Although Gongyu couldn’t cook, she was good at daily cleaning. But according to Gongyu, she wasn’t diligent before. She only started learning to do chores to help relieve her mother’s burden.

The two studied until 9 o’clock. Yaqi asked questions humbly, and Gongyu explained carefully in every detail.

Because Gongyu’s house didn’t have air conditioning, Yaqi’s face looked like she had just taken a shower. But she didn’t seem to mind and continued focusing on her exercises.

Gongyu felt guilty, but there was no other option. Helpless, she got up and fetched a small fan, placing it facing Yaqi.

“Ah, thanks, Gongyu.”

“Sorry, I don’t have air conditioning at home…”

“It’s fine~”

“But aren’t you using it?”

“Me?”

Gongyu was also covered in sweat, her loose pajamas sticking to her body. But the fan was too small to cover both of them. After hesitating, Gongyu smiled and waved her hand.

“No, no. You use it. I’m used to it.”

“Used to what? In this heat…”

As she spoke, Yaqi turned to look at the fan and understood Gongyu’s situation.

“Oh…”

“See? It’s fine. Let’s keep doing the problems.”

“Hmm… hey, I’ve got an idea!”

So she sat on the inside seat, pulled Gongyu over to sit next to her, and then pressed up against her.

The small wind from the fan gently brushed their sweaty faces, feeling very refreshing. But Gongyu felt hotter than before. The soft ‘airbag’ tightly pressed against her arm, and her face instantly turned bright red.

“How about this? Now we can both enjoy the breeze!”

“Um… but wouldn’t it be hotter sticking together like this?”

Gongyu silently looked away and muttered softly.

“Ah, you’re right…”

Yaqi was about to move away, but Gongyu quickly said:

“Forget it, it’s fine. This way we can both get some wind. It works.”

“Okay~”

The rain continued to fall, and time quietly crept into the late night. Yaqi’s eyelids were already drooping. She was doing the problems half asleep, supporting herself on the table, her head nodding precariously.

Gongyu had long finished her homework, but she waited for Yaqi by self-studying the later material. Seeing Yaqi drowsy beside her, she couldn’t help but cover her mouth and giggle. She gently shook her.

“Yaqi, this problem is wrong~”

Gongyu’s tone was not at all impatient, as soft as if coaxing a baby.

“Ah…”

Yaqi came to, looked down, blinked confusedly, and pouted pitifully.

“Ah… it really is wrong again… hmm…”

“Hehe… Yaqi, maybe…”

Before Gongyu could finish, Yaqi stood up, placed her hands on the table, and stuck out her butt.

“Eh?!”

Gongyu was stunned. Yaqi’s butt was less than half a meter from Gongyu’s face. She only wore a shirt, and when she stuck out, the black underwear was directly exposed.

Gongyu’s face turned red to her ears. Her body froze. She couldn’t turn her head, nor could she pull down Yaqi’s shirt. The scent of her own rose body wash wafted into her nose.

“Ya… Yaqi… what… what are you doing?!”

“Hmm… Liu Ya, aren’t you going to hit me?”

“Hit… hit? Liu… Liu Ya? I’m Gongyu…”

“Gongyu… Gongyu… Gongyu?!”

Yaqi suddenly woke up. She whipped her head around to look at Gongyu, then looked down at herself. Her face blushed crimson. She instantly pulled down her shirt, sat down, pursed her lips, and stayed frozen.
