Chapter 34: Midnight Snack Raid

Aunt Zhao came to the bathroom door and knocked. Yaqi poked her head out, took the towel, and forgot to close the door as she went back to drying herself.

Aunt Zhao peeked through the crack. Yaqi’s face looked refreshed, completely different from her stiff expression earlier. She smiled silently and went to the living room to wait.

Yaqi was a carefree girl who didn’t worry much. Aunt Zhao knew that, but she was still a bit confused.

After all, Yaqi had looked like she did something bad. And Liu Ya’s behavior was a bit too risky. Given her personality, she wouldn’t normally do that unless she couldn’t help it.

After her analysis, Aunt Zhao couldn’t help but get curious about what happened.

“Ah! It’s so hot today…”

Yaqi came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel.

“Yaqi…”

“Hmm? What is it, Auntie?”

“I want to ask you something…”

“Go ahead.”

“You… and Liu Ya, what happened earlier?”

“Ah… well…”

Yaqi was startled, looked away, scratched her cheek awkwardly, hesitated, then whispered shyly:

“It’s… nothing much… it’s just that Liu Ya accidentally… *&#?…”

“Huh? What?”

“Just… the corner…”

Yaqi’s words were mumbled, as soft as a mosquito. Aunt Zhao didn’t catch anything and leaned in confused.

“Yaqi, speak clearly, okay?”

“Oh dear…!”

Yaqi blushed, pushed her away weakly, lowered her head and bit her lip. After a moment, she tiptoed to Aunt Zhao’s ear and haltingly told her what happened.

“Pfft! Accidentally?”

Aunt Zhao couldn’t help laughing. Yaqi shook her arm shyly.

“Oh! At that time, Liu Ya’s foot was too close to me… I didn’t expect it! When I looked up, it just happened. I was stunned!”

“Haha! No wonder. Then Liu Ya must have been quite shocked too! Haha…”

“Yeah. Liu Ya seemed stunned too. Oh no… so embarrassing! And you made me say it again! Hmph!”

Yaqi puffed out her cheeks in anger, tightened her towel, and turned away pointedly.

Aunt Zhao laughed even harder. She had thought Liu Ya did something to Yaqi, but now it seemed it was unclear who won and who lost.

Though she wanted to hear more details, considering poor Liu Ya who got the short end, she held back and quickly suppressed her rising smile.

“Pfft…”

“Auntie… you’re too much. Still laughing…”

“Haha… sorry, sorry! No more laughing, no more laughing…”

Aunt Zhao laughed until tears came. She rubbed her eyes and said:

“A moment ago you looked like a robot. I thought something was wrong. So that’s what it was.”

“I… I didn’t react in time either. It just happened like that. It scared me!”

“Haha…”

Seeing Yaqi’s aggrieved expression, Aunt Zhao suddenly thought of something and a mischievous smile appeared.

“Hehe~ So… how was it?”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Was it smelly?”

“Ah? Oh, Auntie~ you…!”

Yaqi closed her eyes angrily and gently punched her. Aunt Zhao pretended to be hurt and “screamed.”

“Haha… okay, okay. Auntie was wrong. Hehe…”

“Hmph!”

Yaqi crossed her arms, pouted, and gave her a pointed look before turning away. But soon she muttered quietly:

“And… it was actually quite fragrant…”

“Oh~ Sounds delicious.”

“Mmph! Auntie~! See what you made me say! Take this!”

Yaqi blushed again and started a one-sided beating. Her towel fell off.

Seeing Yaqi’s cute reaction, Aunt Zhao fought back by tickling her. Yaqi couldn’t stop laughing.

Then the scene turned into a chaotic melee until both were out of breath.

“Ah… okay, okay, no more playing. Yaqi, go put on clothes. Even though the weather is warm, don’t catch a cold.”

“Hehe… okay! I’ll go upstairs then.”

“Mm. Go ahead. I’ll rest a bit.”

Yaqi retied her towel, made a funny face at Aunt Zhao, and turned to go to the second floor. Aunt Zhao smiled and just sat down on the sofa when she suddenly remembered something and jumped up.

“Wait, Yaqi!”

“Ah… what… what is it, Auntie? You scared me.”

“Oh… um… I’ll get your clothes! You just wait here.”

“Huh? I can get them myself…”

“It’s fine, it’s fine. Sit on the sofa for a bit. Old Liu isn’t coming home tonight, so don’t worry.”

With that, Aunt Zhao hurriedly got up, pulled Yaqi to sit on the sofa, then quickly went upstairs.

“Oh… okay… thank you, Auntie.”

“It’s nothing, nothing.”

Yaqi was a bit confused but obediently sat on the sofa waiting. The pajamas took a full ten minutes to reach her hands.

Liu Ya also came down in a nightgown with Aunt Zhao. After Yaqi changed, the three sat on the sofa chatting and laughing.

Around 10 PM, everyone went to bed. Since it was Friday, the girls wanted to get a good beauty sleep.

Tonight, Yaqi got the right to sleep with clothes on, but only a set of underwear. The cute rabbit pajamas still couldn’t be worn.

After all, Liu Ya didn’t like holding a bunch of fabric when sleeping. Soft, fuzzy texture was definitely better for sleep.

Though Yaqi was dissatisfied, she remembered she was just borrowing the bed, so she didn’t dare to push too hard. Compared to last night, this was already a big improvement. If she asked for more, she might lose even the underwear.

Soon, the quiet bedroom was filled with peaceful, comfortable snores.

In the middle of the night, Yaqi’s stomach growled. She let out two uncomfortable groans.

She slowly opened her eyes and found Liu Ya was gone. She rubbed her eyes in confusion, sat up, and looked around.

“Mm… Liu Ya?”

Still groggy, Yaqi got out of bed, put on her shoes, and went to the door. It was slightly ajar.

‘Did she go to the bathroom?’

Just then, her stomach growled again.

‘Ugh… so hungry. I didn’t eat enough at dinner.’

‘Ah, Western food is said to be refined, but the portions are too small.’

Rubbing her stomach, she suddenly had an idea and began to scheme.

‘Come to think of it, Liu Ya used to love snacks. I wonder if she still does.’

‘It’s too late to bother Auntie. Maybe… I’ll go check? Yeah, good idea. Waiting is boring. Let’s go check. Hehe.’

Yaqi went to her suitcase, pulled out a loose top, put it on, and crept to the kitchen, carefully searching. Little did she know, someone was standing behind her, hands on hips, watching silently.

“No chips? Even cookies would be fine.”

“If you want chips, they’re on the cabinet above your head.”

“Oh, okay.”

Yaqi obediently reached up to open the cabinet, but suddenly sensed something wrong. She turned around and saw a girl in a black dress standing at the kitchen door like a ghost, grinning eerily.

“Ah!”

Startled out of her wits, Yaqi sat back hard against the counter and quickly covered her mouth.

She slowly opened her eyes and saw it was Liu Ya. She complained quietly:

“Liu Ya? Why is it you!”

“Heh~ Who else would it be?”

Liu Ya looked triumphant, turned to lean against the doorframe, and picked up an already opened bag of chips from the fridge.

“What’s up? Sneaking a snack?”

“No… no…”

“Then when I said the chips are up there, why did you reach for them?”

“I… I just…”

“Hmm? Just what?”

“Mm… I’m a bit hungry…”

“So that’s not sneaking a snack?”

Liu Ya grinned mischievously, teasing her nonstop, thinking she could keep this up all night.

But Yaqi didn’t think so. Getting caught sneaking a snack was embarrassing, especially by Liu Ya. Yaqi blushed deeply and said anxiously:

“Fine, fine! I was sneaking a snack…”

“Hmph! Then why did you deny it?”

“Oh… I was too embarrassed… sorry…”

Yaqi apologized timidly, shrinking herself, hands placed obediently in front like a child caught doing wrong.

But Liu Ya wasn’t going to let her off easy. She finally caught Yaqi’s weakness and wouldn’t let go. She had to teach her a lesson.

After all, when Liu Ya was little and sneaked snacks at night, Yaqi often lectured her pretentiously. Now was the perfect chance for revenge.

“Really. Didn’t you eat dinner? Sneaking snacks at midnight isn’t good behavior.”

“Mm…”

“And I remember someone once said sneaking snacks at night is a thief’s behavior and will make people dislike you. Who said that?”

“Uh… I did.”

“Oh~ You said it? Then what are you doing now?”

“Oh, I’m sorry, Liu Ya. Why are you so mean?”

Yaqi pouted and stared at her resentfully. She knew this was revenge, but since she was caught red-handed, any excuse was weak, so she had to admit fault.

Seeing Yaqi yield, Liu Ya humphed arrogantly, picked up a chip, and put it in her mouth.

“Hey! Wait! Where did you get those chips, Liu Ya?”

Only then did Yaqi notice the bag of chips in Liu Ya’s hand and asked discontentedly.

“Huh? This… this is a midnight snack! Not a snack…”

Liu Ya immediately turned her head away and stuffed a few more chips in her mouth.

“Some nerve! No wonder I woke up and you were gone. You were sneaking a snack first! And you’re blaming me!”

“I… I was doing it openly!”

“Some openly!”

Yaqi lunged at her. Liu Ya dodged but Yaqi caught her skirt hem and closed the distance.

“Wow! Don’t pull!”

The nightgown was soft silk. A slight tug could expose her skin, and Yaqi pulled hard. Liu Ya felt a chill and quickly held the chips above her head, using her other hand to pull the skirt up.

“Qi… Yaqi, sis!”

“Hurry, hurry! Give me the chips!”

“You…! No way!”

Liu Ya was shorter than Yaqi. Seeing Yaqi about to reach them, Liu Ya turned and hugged the chips to her chest.

But Yaqi wasn’t weak. Seeing Liu Ya’s defense, she immediately thought of a way to break it, one she just learned from Aunt Zhao.

Yaqi raised her hands, wiggled her fingers, and reached for Liu Ya’s armpits to tickle her.

“Ahahaha… mmph!” Liu Ya quickly covered her mouth, laughing silently.

“How about it? Will you give?”

“Mm… haha… no… no!”

“Oh? So stubborn? Take this!”

Yaqi attacked fiercely. Liu Ya couldn’t hold on, laughing breathlessly, wriggling like a caterpillar, and finally collapsed on the floor.

But Yaqi didn’t stop. She pressed down on Liu Ya and continued tickling. Liu Ya’s hand covering her mouth went limp, and she laughed loudly while trying to keep quiet.

“Come on! Give up? Haha!”

“Hahahaha… no!… hahahaha…”

“Fine! You said it, Liu Ya! I’ll also avenge that kick! Take this… ah!”

The living room light suddenly turned on. Yaqi was startled and froze. Liu Ya took the chance to gasp for air, lying limp on the floor.

Yaqi looked up at the light switch and saw Aunt Zhao with hands on her hips, a mischievous grin on her face.

“Well, well! Look what I found! Two little mice stealing snacks in the middle of the night!”
