Chapter 8: The First Radio Appearance

“Good morning, everyone~! Are you all ready to board Morning Train? Today’s Morning Train with Kim Kiho has a hot-off-the-press rookie group joining us! Please welcome… Saever!”

They got the group’s name wrong before the show had even properly started.

Not a great sign.

“One, two! Hello! Everlasting 4ever! We’re 4ever!”

Following Yunbin’s cue, the members greeted everyone with polished, professional smiles.

At the same time, they subtly made it clear that their group wasn’t called Saever.

Only then did Kim Kiho, who had apparently been hosting without bothering to look at the script, realize his mistake.

“Oh dear, it was 4ever? I guess I’m getting old—I didn’t know how to read it. It’s written with the number 4 and then ‘ever’ in English. Sorry about that~ You young folks will forgive me, right?”

“Yes! It’s totally okay!”

To begin with, no one expected a radio host to research some rookie group from a tiny agency.

They had only debuted yesterday.

It was perfectly normal that he didn’t know them.

Jaemin forced himself to stay positive.

“Let’s go around one by one and introduce yourselves to our listeners. This is a visible radio broadcast, so look into that camera over there.”

“Yes!”

This is bad.

Even Yunbin, whom Jaemin considered the calmest member, was trembling so hard that it looked like his hands were vibrating.

Gripping the microphone, Yunbin took a deep breath before speaking stiffly.

“Hello. I’m Yunbin, the leader of 4ever.”

“Hi~ I’m James. James.”

“Hello! I’m Eunhan, the youngest member of 4ever! I’m twenty years old!”

“Hello. I’m Woohyung.”

Jaemin silently counted to three before putting on the warm, trustworthy smile he’d perfected for job interviews.

Then he delivered the introduction he’d rehearsed all morning.

“Hello~! I never imagined I’d one day appear on Morning Train, a show I’ve listened to every morning! It honestly feels like a dream and such an honor. I’m Jaemin from 4ever. Good morning, everyone!”

He had memorized every word during the ride over.

The instant he finished speaking…

Eunhan reached over and pinched Jaemin’s cheek, stretching it out.

“Are you even human? For a second I thought you were an AI!”

The visible radio wasn’t exactly high-definition, but it was still broadcasting live.

And he’d spent money getting his makeup done.

Jaemin wanted to complain, but the camera was focused on him.

So he simply smiled brightly as if nothing had happened.

“Wow, Jaemin! You’ve really got a gift for talking! At this rate you’ll be hosting your own radio show someday~”

“Haha. That’s actually my dream.”

“Hyung! We’re idols. Performing should come first!”

The host had only been making casual conversation, yet Eunhan jumped in anyway.

Jaemin wanted to flick him on the forehead.

But he had no desire to end his idol career with a malicious headline like:

Instead, hidden beneath the table where the cameras couldn’t see…

He firmly stepped on Eunhan’s foot.

Then, before Eunhan could blurt out, “Hyung, why are you stepping on me?”

Jaemin quickly clamped a hand over his mouth.

“We definitely can’t skip watching a rookie group’s debut stage. But before that! Let’s hear a word from our sponsors.”

During the commercial break, Jaemin sat there awkwardly.

He wasn’t sure whether he should be talking.

He simply fiddled with the microphone stand.

Thankfully, Yunbin—sitting beside the DJ—handled everything like the social butterfly he was.

He handed over a signed album and politely asked the host to take good care of them.

When the break ended, all five members gathered around the live microphone.

Jaemin’s hands trembled as he gripped it.

“Nervous?”

While an online university advertisement played, Woohyung casually tapped the back of Jaemin’s hand.

“Of course. You should be nervous before every performance.”

“That’s a good attitude.”

At least they weren’t wearing those hideous stage outfits this time.

They were singing in normal clothes.

For Jaemin, that alone was something to be grateful for.

Since it was a standing live performance with microphones…

There was no awkward choreography.

Only their voices mattered.

Unfortunately… Removing the terrible styling and choreography didn’t magically make the song any better.

Normally, even out of courtesy, radio hosts applauded enthusiastically after a live performance.

But when 4ever finished performing Ten Symbols of Longevity

“Wow… that’s… that’s certainly a unique song.”

Kim Kiho completely failed to hide the expression on his face.

“Well, I’m an old guy, so maybe I just don’t understand what young people listen to these days. But maybe young folks actually like this kind of thing. Hahaha. Sorry.”

“No, it’s alright!”

So that’s what the general public really thinks…

Jaemin’s mood sank lower than ever.

“I noticed both the title track and the B-side on your debut album were written and composed by your company CEO.”

“Ah… yes…”

“Well, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of chances to talk about the title track later, so let’s skip over that for now.”

Please… Please find another hobby besides songwriting.

Jaemin silently prayed.

The way the DJ deliberately avoided discussing the awful title track made him highly suspicious.

“But this song here was written and composed by one of the members, right? Woohyung?”

“Yes. I participated in writing And-ing.”

“Participated? Looks like you wrote it all yourself.”

“It just happened that way… Thank you.”

He wasn’t even trying…

And he still landed an interview segment.

Jaemin felt bitter.

At the same time…

He couldn’t help realizing that talent really was what allowed people to survive in this industry.

That’s it.

Starting today, I’m learning how to write lyrics.

Under the table, he quietly clenched his fist.

“Is this song premiering on our radio show?”

“Yes.”

“Our Morning Train loves exclusives. Let’s play it.”

While And-ing played… The members chatted with the DJ and waved at viewers watching the visible radio broadcast.

Jaemin blew finger hearts toward the camera.

He acted out little gestures matching the lyrics.

Across from him… Woohyung hadn’t even taken his headset off.

He looked completely absorbed in his own song.

Less than four minutes later, the track ended.

Without actually listening, the DJ exaggerated his reaction anyway.

“Wow. That’s incredible. You could totally promote this as your follow-up single.”

“Thank you. Next time, please actually listen to it.”

For some reason… Jaemin felt like Woohyung had just subtly roasted the DJ.

The host either didn’t notice… Or pretended not to.

Instead, he busily read listener messages.

“The response is really hot right now! Let’s read a few.”

“This is my first time hearing this song, but I really like it.”

“It’s refreshing and bright.”

“I want to see this performed on stage.”

“It’s better than the title track.”

“Thank you.”

“To all our Morning Train passengers~ Please remember… Saever— I mean, 4ever!”

They wrapped up the radio schedule without any major accidents.

Considering nothing disastrous had happened…

That alone felt like success.

Jaemin let out a quiet sigh of relief as he removed his headset.

“Thank you so much, sunbaenim! This has been 4ever!”

“Oh… yeah.”

Even after the broadcast ended, they politely thanked the DJ again.

Kim Kiho barely looked up.

He seemed much more interested in checking his stock portfolio on his phone.

As Jaemin walked out of the studio… He sincerely wished for every stock Kim Kiho owned to crash….. and be delisted.

At least performing had earned them a few fans.

Most of them were international fans.

But in an era where K-pop was global anyway… Jaemin didn’t care where they came from.

Simply knowing there were people who liked him… Made him genuinely happy.

“How do I turn them into hardcore fans?”

The problem was… There were only a handful of them.

And most weren’t dedicated fans.

They were casual listeners who would probably move on to someone else in a week.

Jaemin wanted them to look at him… Only him.

No matter what it took.

LMAOOO HanJaem crumbs today

That cheek pinch on the radio was insane 😭

This is exactly why I love younger-top ships

God, when are Saever gonna blow up

The second they do, they’ll be major. I’m calling it.

Without telling anyone… Jaemin had secretly made a private account to spy on the tiny 4ever fandom.

He’d followed one account because it constantly uploaded photos of him and Eunhan.

He assumed it belonged to an ordinary fan.

It didn’t take long before he realized…

It was a shipping account.

Wait… Isn’t this kind of thing only for ridiculously famous groups like PPP?

Scratching his head, Jaemin stared at the flood of completely fabricated social media posts.

Archiving HanJaem real-life moments because I want them forever.

According to this person’s analysis… He and Eunhan were practically ready to run off to the Netherlands and get married.

Scrolling farther down… He found today’s radio appearance.

Apparently… Simply sitting beside Eunhan had somehow turned them into Romeo and Juliet.

I got SO excited thinking Jaemin’s roommate was Eunhan 😭

Then I found out it was Woohyung and got pissed

Use search protection, idiot.

Stop announcing you’re into gay shipping.

I searched Woohyung and ended up seeing this garbage

Funny how you censored your own ship name but not his.

RPS is every idol’s destiny and sacred duty

I don’t care about your “sacred duty.”

Just use search protection when mentioning Woohyung, you psycho.

(SLOW) Forever @stan_everlasting4ever

You’re ALL showing up in searches.

Please use search protection

Our fandom is so tiny that searching still brings up tweets from 12 hours ago.

What are you people doing?

Watching the argument unfold from his anonymous lurker account… Jaemin blankly searched HanJaem.

There were four posts today.

Considering searching Yu Jaemin only returned six… That was actually a significant amount.

As he slowly scrolled… He murmured to himself with a completely serious expression.

“So… me and Eunhan as a pairing… actually works?”

As long as it helped him become even a little more popular…

He didn’t particularly care how Jaemin’s eyes gleamed with ambition.
