Chapter 1: Cannon Fodder

(Translator’s note: The protagonist’s pronouns follow his self-identity, not his physical body. He is in a female body but identifies as male, so ‘he’ is used.)

Witch Era 1850.

High above the empire’s northern border, inside a magic airship.

“Ten minutes to the designated drop point! All units, get ready!”

The captain’s roar came through the loudspeaker, deafening.

Luka covered his ears and curled up in the corner of the troop cabin, his petite body shivering.

In his arms, he clutched a standard-issue magic rifle that was a head taller than he was.

His knuckles were white. Cold sweat soaked his body.

The black hair and flab from his past life were long gone.

In their place were golden hair, blue eyes, and a thin, frail girl’s body.

He had transmigrated into a magical girl of the Witch World.

Before he could even take off his clothes and give the body a careful once-over, the empire’s recruiting officer grabbed him and stuffed him into a truck.

He was hauled to boot camp. After just three days of rushed training, the drill instructor kicked him onto a magic airship and sent him to the front lines of the great war against the demon army, as cannon fodder.

From his comrades’ whispered gossip, the original owner of this body had apparently gotten into some romantic dispute with an imperial princess.

A mysterious hand had set her up, dragging her to the front at the last minute to fill out the numbers.

Luka listened to the distant rumble of artillery and felt nothing but resentment toward this shitty world.

He hadn’t inherited the original owner’s memories.

Never mind that the original owner, a common magical girl, could have a romantic entanglement with an imperial princess. That alone was enough to shock a real man like him.

The simple fact that this loli body wasn’t even as tall as the magic rifle in his hands, and he was being pushed out to die, was beyond belief.

The Witch World really was a world whose technology and culture lagged a hundred or two hundred years behind Earth.

Wicked and barbaric to the extreme!

Luka cursed inwardly as he nervously adjusted the straps of his clothing.

The women’s garments he’d never laid a hand on in his past life made him fidget.

This magic dress he was wearing had to be designed wrong.

A one-piece dress. White tights. Frilly little boots.

It looked way too cute and flashy. One glance and you could tell it wasn’t suited for combat.

Any stranger would think he was a gift-wrapped present, sent over to hand the demon army some perks.

“Bullshit! This uniform is a product of magic technology. It blocks magic attacks, and it’s waterproof and stain-proof! Plenty of ordinary soldiers want to wear it and don’t get the chance!”

That was how the drill instructor had refuted his doubts back at boot camp.

Heh. Whether it could block magic attacks was anyone’s guess.

Waterproof, though, was true.

It had done a perfect job of trapping all his cold sweat inside the skirt!

Luka gritted his teeth and quietly freed one hand.

He tried to adjust the skirt.

Unfortunately, he moved his arm a little too much.

Someone nearby let out an “ooh la la.”

Catching his little move, the magical girl beside him, the one with the eyepatch, black hair, and black eyes, sidled over with a grin.

“Yo, newbie. What are your little hands sneaking around for? So scared you let something loose?”

She smiled flirtatiously, draped her arm over Luka’s shoulder, and pressed her nose against his golden hair, sniffing a few times. “Want big sister to teach you some survival tricks?”

Luka shot her a glare, annoyed and embarrassed, and stayed silent.

“Don’t be mad. Everyone goes through this.”

Ignoring his silent protest, the black-haired girl launched into a long speech. “Listen carefully. Once you drop, don’t even think about pulling Z-shaped aerial maneuvers. They’re useless. Pour all your magic into accelerating in a straight line and drive straight down at the ground. Every extra second you stay in the air makes it ten times more likely the cannon demons will turn you into ground meat with their anti-air shells!”

With that, she gave Luka’s little butt a smack.

Then, as if utterly by accident, her palm squeezed the soft flesh a couple times. She giggled. “This is the veteran’s secret to surviving a hundred battles. Learn it well, haha!”

Her wise single eye gleamed with the light of wisdom. She looked so composed, so reliable.

So much so that Luka didn’t even react to what she had just done to his body.

Boom!

Before she finished speaking, the cabin wall beside them burst open.

A huge magic shell tore into the cabin, grazing the black-haired girl’s forehead.

The sheer force blew off half her head. Red and white splattered across Luka’s face.

“…Huh?”

Luka touched the bloody pulp on his face, dazed.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”

The captain’s shout and the explosions went off at the same time.

More shells slammed into the cabin.

In an instant, wall fragments and severed limbs flew everywhere. Cries of agony filled the air.

The magic airship lost its balance, pitching the living around left and right.

Smack!

With a loud crack, the cabin door opened.

The captain’s roar came through: “Bail out! Bail out now! All units, deploy on your own!”

Click. His safety harness unlocked automatically.

Dazed, Luka was shoved out of the cabin by the magical girls around him.

Whoosh!

The wind lashed his golden hair wildly. Head first, feet up, he plunged toward the ground.

In his inverted view, countless colorful magical girls scattered across the sky like flower petals.

Whoosh!

Magic shells screamed past, blasting the petals into blossoms of flesh and blood blooming in the twilight sky.

At last, the ruined magic airship exploded into a giant fireball, lighting up the scene.

More than a hundred such scenes unfolded across the vast sky at once.

What happened?

What hit us?

Luka’s mind went blank.

The sudden catastrophe and the unprecedented bloodshed had frozen his thoughts.

But soon, the intense shock of weightless falling restored a sliver of clarity.

“I’m, I’m falling! Fly! I have to fly!”

He swallowed his panic, gathered his magic, and instinctively built a spell in his mind.

“[Flight]!”

Whoosh!

Air currents churned under him, greatly slowing his fall.

In a few seconds, he righted himself and hovered in midair.

He looked down.

Below was a huge battlefield.

Ruins, trenches, barricades, and the wreckage of magic weapons were packed densely across it.

Magic shells flew everywhere. Cannons thundered.

What the hell is this place?

The designated drop point wasn’t here at all!

Where was he supposed to land?

Luka hovered in the sky, staring at the battlefield below. His brain had nearly crashed.

Before he could take in the situation, a magic shell shot straight at him from the corner of his eye.

Boom!

A pain so intense it nearly numbed his nerves tore through him.

A huge hole blasted open in his chest.

Then more shells blew his petite body apart.

In the end, he became a lump of minced flesh, the same as the other blood blossoms, and splattered everywhere.

Luka lost consciousness.

He died.

“…Yo, newbie. What are your little hands sneaking around for…”

The flippant voice sounded by his ear.

Luka stared blankly at the black-haired girl sidling up to him, his mind empty.

He instinctively felt his chest. There were only a pair of heartbreakingly small mounds. No big hole.

I didn’t die?

Was everything just now an illusion?

Luka stared at his chest, shocked and wary.

But the pain and fear had been so real.

“…This is the veteran’s secret to surviving a hundred battles… Hey, are you even listening? Scared stupid already?”

The black-haired girl pouted in dissatisfaction.

Smack.

She slapped Luka’s little butt again.

Swish!

Luka snapped his head up, his big blue eyes locked onto the black-haired girl.

As if trying to find a flower growing on her face.

The black-haired girl found his unblinking stare a little creepy.

“Hey, why are you staring at me like that? It was just two slaps. No need to make a fuss.”

She rubbed the goosebumps on her arm and muttered, “I’m just saying, this is a small way we veterans show comfort. It’s not like I’m into loli types like you anyway…”

Boom!

Before she could finish, the cabin wall burst open.

A magic shell tore past the black-haired girl’s head, ripping off half her skull, blood spraying everywhere.
