“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”
The captain’s roar and the cannon fire came again. The cabin fell into chaos.
Everything was exactly like a few minutes ago.
Luka wiped brain matter off his face in shock, struggling to keep his footing in the violently shaking cabin.
‘It wasn’t a hallucination. I really didn’t die. I went back to right before I died!’
‘Could it be… “Death Rewind” is my “Exclusive Magic” as a Magical Girl?!’
Before he could figure out his new ability, the cabin door snapped open. The captain’s urging voice rang out again.
No time to think. Luka staggered to his feet and threw himself out of the cabin.
Whoosh!
The fierce wind blasted past, twisting his features, whipping his long golden hair wildly behind him.
“Windbreak!”
Luka focused his will and formed a simple spell.
A low hum.
A thin golden barrier flickered to life over his skin, blocking the howling wind.
This time, he’d learned his lesson. He had no intention of slowing or hovering in the air.
He poured mana into his body and streaked downward like a bolt of lightning.
Luka struggled to keep his petite body vertical to the ground, making himself a much smaller target.
Swoosh!
Countless magic bullets howled past him by a hair’s breadth, blowing the magical girls behind him apart.
He escaped unscathed.
This method of dodging anti-air fire was brilliant.
As expected of the “Burning Art” the veteran had passed down.
‘Thank you, you perverted lolicon One-Eyed Dragon!’
Luka’s heart hammered. Relief washed over his face.
But as he closed in on the ground, his expression soured.
He looked down.
In the wide area where he was about to land, dense ranks of demonfolk already stood waiting for him.
“Magica! Kill her!”
Seeing him hurtling toward them, the towering, hideous demonfolk raised their magic guns and screamed.
‘W-we’re done for!’
Luka’s face went ashen.
One minute later.
“…Yo, newbie. Sneaking your little hand…”
Inside the noisy cabin, the One-Eyed Dragon’s voice reached his ears.
“Hiss!”
Luka sucked in a sharp breath and clutched his forehead, pale.
He’d died again.
He’d cleared the anti-air fire, but the moment he touched down, the demonfolk who’d been ready and waiting fired on him all at once.
With his paltry mana, the shield he could barely hold up didn’t last more than a few hits.
He was shot full of holes in an instant.
Because this time he wasn’t killed instantly, the pain was far worse than his first death.
Even after rewinding, the terror lingered. His body trembled.
Luka closed his eyes and felt for the strangeness in his body. A warning surfaced in his mind:
[Rewinds used today: 2]
[Rewinds remaining today: 3]
His expression darkened.
Clearly, “Death Rewind” wasn’t some infinite cheat.
It was a “magic” with clear costs and limits.
If he burned through all his rewinds, could he even survive this hell?
That was a terrifying thought.
“…This is what it means to be a veteran who’s survived a hundred battles. Hey, what’s wrong? You okay?”
The One-Eyed Dragon stopped mid-sentence as she noticed Luka’s condition.
She let go of his shoulder and asked with concern:
“Newbie, don’t tell you scared yourself into a fit. Pull yourself together. Want me to rub your little…”
Smack!
Before she could finish, Luka spun around and shoved her hard in the chest.
Caught off guard, she toppled backward.
“Ow! Wh-what the hell are you doing?!” the One-Eyed Dragon snarled.
Boom!
Before she could steady herself, the cabin wall burst open.
A magic bullet tore between them, its flash singeing a few of her eyebrows.
The One-Eyed Dragon froze for half a second, then bellowed, “Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”
The cabin took another hit and fell into chaos.
Aside from the One-Eyed Dragon “luckily” surviving, everything else played out exactly like the first two times.
Click. The cabin door opened.
Above the deafening roar of the wind, the One-Eyed Dragon shouted into Luka’s ear:
“Newbie! If you don’t want to die, stick close to me!”
With that, she dashed out before he could answer.
Even in her hurry, she still found time to slap Luka’s little butt under the pretext of “hurrying him along.”
‘This woman. I never should’ve saved her!’
Luka gritted his teeth and leaped out after her, humiliated and angry.
Whoosh!
As the wind howled, he cast Windbreak again.
He swept his gaze around and caught sight of the One-Eyed Dragon below.
She’d spread a Windbreak barrier around herself too.
But hers was shaped like a teardrop, pointed in front and wide in back.
She fell at blinding speed, as if the wind resistance didn’t exist.
‘Windbreak can be used like that?’
Luka adjusted his barrier into the same streamlined shape.
His falling speed increased sharply.
He poured even more mana into accelerating and barely managed to trail far behind her.
The two of them plunged downward like twin bolts of lightning.
Soon, they cleared the most dangerous altitude.
Countless anti-air magic bullets screamed past them, but none connected.
They kept falling until they were only a few hundred meters from the ground.
The One-Eyed Dragon seemed to notice something and suddenly changed direction.
Keeping her body nearly vertical, she angled sharply to the left.
Luka copied her, following in her wake.
He had a faint hope riding on her choice.
She was an incurable, sexually harassing lolicon with terrible luck who died every time without his help.
But as a veteran, she really knew her stuff, both in tactics and in magic.
In that short time, maybe she’d already assessed the battlefield below.
Maybe she’d even picked out the safest place to land.
It was worth following her gamble.
At high speed, the scenery below shifted. Trenches and demonfolk thinned out, replaced by ruins and trees.
Sure enough.
The landing spot the One-Eyed Dragon chose was an abandoned village on the edge of the main battlefield.
It sat between the mountains and the forest, utterly unremarkable.
She was fast, already hundreds of meters ahead of him.
She landed and dove straight into a two-story wooden house in the center of the village.
Bang! Bang!
The moment she vanished inside, gunshots rang out from the house.
Enemies inside!
Luka’s heart clenched. He dropped low and hurried toward the house.
When he was a dozen meters out, he landed and peered from behind a ruined stone wall.
The gunfire had stopped. Silence returned.
It seemed the fight was over.
Who had won?
Luka swallowed and whispered:
“Shield!”
A translucent barrier formed half a meter around his body.
His mana was weak, but the shield could still take one or two hits.
His defenses ready, Luka unshouldered his magic gun and crept toward the house on quiet feet.
He didn’t dare fly up. Without cover, he’d be a sitting duck.
He slipped through the front door.
The first floor was in disarray, furniture scattered everywhere.
But there were no corpses, and no blood either.
‘Upstairs?’
Keeping his gun trained on the stairs, Luka climbed in a firing stance.
Just as he was about to peek over the top.
Creak!
A rotten floorboard splintered under his foot, the sharp sound cutting through the silence.
“Damn it!”
Luka’s heart stopped for half a beat. He froze in place, not daring to move.
He stayed frozen for thirty seconds. Still nothing moved.
Only his own pounding heart.
Forget it!
Luka took a deep breath, hurried up the last steps, and burst onto the second floor.
What he saw startled him.
In the cluttered room, several corpses lay on the floor.
