Chapter 30: An Open Scheme

They ate in silence, the table of food disappearing at a storm’s speed.

Moye put up a little false modesty at first, but soon surrendered to the lure of the food and started eating eagerly.

Alesia frowned at the start, unwilling to touch Luka’s big meal.

But under Luka’s steady gaze, she began eating reluctantly.

The dishes vanished quickly.

After the meal, Alesia even cast a basic auxiliary spell, Cleanse, and washed all the utensils and the table.

It was hard to guess how many practical spells she still had up her sleeve.

After the satisfying meal, the three sat around the table.

Luka cleared his throat, attracting the attention of Moye and Alesia.

“Even though the Bat-Winged Demon threat has been dealt with for now, I’m afraid this is only the beginning.”

Luka’s expression was serious. “Now we have to discuss in detail what we do next.”

Moye and Alesia both nodded earnestly, ready to listen to him.

Luka was quite satisfied with the sight.

Clearly, he had firmly secured his control over this three-person team.

“Before we start, Alesia, I have something to tell you.”

Luka looked at Alesia. “It’s about my personal situation. Please stay calm when you hear it.”

After saying this, he laid out the whole story: his suspicion that he had “Magic Tremor Syndrome” and lost his memory, the “Danger Sense” spell he had invented, his fight with the Spider Slaughter Demon after the airdrop, and his Full Bloom burst.

He left out nothing.

Moye occasionally added details from her perspective.

All of it left Alesia with a grim face and a heavy expression.

She cycled through doubt, sympathy, shock, and rage, a series of complicated emotions flashing across her face.

Especially when she heard that Luka had entered Full Bloom to kill the Spider Slaughter Demon, she couldn’t hide her emotions and instinctively stood up.

Still, she didn’t interrupt. She just listened, then rested her chin on her hand and sat in deep thought.

After a long moment, Alesia spoke. “Lady Doronia, I’d like to confirm a few details with you about what happened after you lost your memory. Is that all right?”

“Ask away.” Luka nodded.

“According to what you said, when you suddenly opened your eyes and regained consciousness, not knowing who you were or where you were, a conscription officer was already standing in front of you.”

“Before you could react, still dazed and confused, the officer forced you onto a truck. When you got off, you were at the basic training camp. Correct?”

“Correct. Just like that.”

Luka nodded. Everything else was true; only the amnesia was a fabrication.

“Good.” Alesia nodded. “Then you entered the camp, and only learned your name and your reality as a Magical Girl from the instructor.”

“But the instructor didn’t reveal anything about your noble identity. Only some new recruits from noble families, who knew your name and recognized your face, realized you were the Crown Princess’s designated wife. They gossiped about it in private, and eventually word reached you. Is that right?”

“Mhm. But they were vague when they talked, and never mentioned it in front of me, so I couldn’t learn much.”

Luka said. “All I knew was that I had some romantic connection with a princess. As for what actually happened, I have no idea.”

“I see. One last question.”

Alesia let out a sigh. “Right after finishing your training, you were directly assigned to the Special Airborne Division, which has a shockingly high casualty rate among all Magical Girl units!”

“And what perfect timing: you were assigned to us the night right before this dangerous operation set out!”

As she spoke, Alesia’s eyes held barely suppressed anger, her voice turning heated.

She calmed herself a little before asking, “I want to know: exactly how long did you train before that?”

Luka was taken aback. “Three days.”

SMACK!

“What? Only three days?”

Before Alesia could reply, Moye slammed the table and shot to her feet. “I only knew you were a newbie, Luka, but I didn’t know they sent you to our squad without any real training!”

“This is suicide! Murder! They’re treating you as cannon fodder!”

“Exactly!” Alesia’s face was equally terrible. “Under normal circumstances, a Magical Girl conscripted into service has to train for at least six months to a year before being sent to the battlefield.”

“As a frontline unit dedicated to dangerous missions, the Special Airborne Division mostly pulls veterans from other units. It almost never takes on raw, completely green new recruits.”

“Even when they do add new recruits, they’ve usually gone through at least a year, sometimes two to three years of special training. There has never been a case like Lady Doronia’s!”

“Somebody must be scheming behind the scenes, manipulating all of this!”

“Yes! Somebody definitely set you up! If I catch that mastermind, I’m going to beat them to death!”

Moye was flushed red with anger. “Damn it! If you didn’t have your danger sense, plus your talent and crazy luck, you’d have died who knows how many times!”

Moye and Alesia were both worked up, pounding the table loudly.

Luka was a bit stunned watching their righteous fury.

Since he had crossed over, he’d thought it was normal in this world to grab a Magical Girl off the street, force her into the army, hand her a gun, and throw her onto the battlefield as a line-filler.

But now it seemed that wasn’t quite the case?

Was he the only unlucky one who got set up?

Who exactly had he offended? From the moment he crossed over, it was hell difficulty.

He couldn’t help asking, “If I really was set up, who did it? And what value did I have for someone to scheme against me like this?”

“It’s irritating, but their methods were very clever. I wouldn’t even call it a conspiracy. It was an open scheme, impossible to defend against.”

Alesia shook her head. “According to imperial law, once a citizen awakens as a Magical Girl, she must serve in the military regardless of age. Only three kinds of people are exempt.”

She raised three fingers. “One, members of the imperial family. Two, first heirs of nobles of baron rank or higher. Three, clergy of the Church of the Magic Goddess.”

“Lady Doronia, you share a deep bond with the Crown Princess, but because you haven’t formally gotten engaged, you don’t actually fall into any of those three categories. By the law, you were obliged to serve.”

“The other side seized on that. While the princess was away from the capital, they conscripted you outright, without even trying to cover it up!”
