Chapter 4: A Bargain for a Fake Marriage

“Murong Tian, if you refuse to get married, I’ll arrange ten or eight bed-warmers for you every night. You figure it out yourself.”

Lin Yaoyao jolted. Wow, that’s exciting!

Just as Murong Tian was about to leave, the jade voice slip at his side rang out with an ear-splitting roar.

It seemed every era had elders who couldn’t stop nagging about marriage.

No one could escape the curse of marriage pressure, not even the “Ghost-Faced Judge.”

As two people both being pressured to marry, with him unwed and her unmarried, Lin Yaoyao couldn’t let this opportunity slip by.

“Master Murong, I’d like to discuss a deal with you.”

“What deal?”

Lin Yaoyao hadn’t expected Murong Tian’s voice to be so warm and clear, so pleasant to the ear.

Under Murong Tian’s cold gaze, Lin Yaoyao didn’t dare say any unnecessary words. She cut straight to the point.

“My father is forcing me to get engaged, and your mother is urging you to marry. Why don’t we help each other? We pretend to get married, then find an excuse to divorce later. How about it?”

“Not a good idea! I can arrange for someone I trust. Why would I need you?”

Murong Tian turned toward the front hall. With a surge of boldness, Lin Yaoyao grabbed his arm.

The treasure appraisal assembly was about to begin. Murong Tian was her best shield against the Bai family’s marriage proposal. She had to hold on to him.

“Master Murong, what if I can help you find the Purple Jade Spirit Marrow?”

The Purple Jade Spirit Marrow could nurture the soul, and it was extremely hard to come by.

After Murong Tian’s father died, his mother Mu Yanshuang’s soul had become unstable. The Murong family had searched everywhere for the marrow for years, but none had ever appeared.

If Lin Yaoyao said she could find it, Murong Tian couldn’t afford to miss even the slimmest chance.

Before the treasure appraisal assembly officially began, the square featured some “warm-up” activities, and stone gambling was one of them.

A crowd was already gathered. Lin Yaoyao dragged Murong Tian to the stall, scanned it, then pointed at the largest stone.

“Boss, I’ll cut this one.”

Hahaha. A burst of laughter erupted from the crowd, one female voice especially shrill.

“Lin Yaoyao, do you really think value is measured by size? The bigger, the more expensive?”

The speaker was Bai Jingming’s cousin, Lu Ruxue, who had never seen eye to eye with Lin Yaoyao. Beside Lu Ruxue stood a white-robed young man of distinguished bearing, none other than Bai Jingming.

“Ruxue, mind your manners!”

“Yaoyao, don’t take it to heart.”

Lin Yaoyao shot Bai Jingming a glare. What a sanctimonious, pretentious act.

“Master Bai, we’re not that close. Don’t call me little sister. And keep your dog on a leash. Don’t let it out to bite.”

Lu Ruxue was so furious she raised her fist to strike, but Bai Jingming stopped her with a single look.

Lin Yaoyao wasn’t afraid of Lu Ruxue making trouble. This was Lin territory. If Lu Ruxue dared touch her, she could use that to reject the engagement.

Unfortunately, Bai Jingming was a man of deep schemes, able to endure what ordinary people couldn’t.

The stone Lin Yaoyao picked was sliced in half with one cut, yielding no spirit marrow at all. The onlookers shook their heads and sighed.

Lu Ruxue mocked loudly: “Lin Yaoyao, if you can dig up spirit marrow from that stone, pigs will climb trees.”

Lin Yaoyao gave a cold laugh, unruffled. This idiot had brought it on herself. Don’t blame her for making a fool of her in public.

“Lu Ruxue, do you dare to make a bet? If this stone of mine contains spirit marrow, you have to climb a tree like a pig without using spiritual power. If I lose, I’ll do whatever you say.”

The crowd egged her on, and Lu Ruxue agreed readily. The stone had already been cut once with nothing inside. The result was obvious. Lin Yaoyao was an utter fool to gamble.

Lin Yaoyao pointed at the remaining half, signaling the cutter to slice it vertically from the side. One cut later, purple light blazed across the sky. Everyone was stunned.

It really was the Purple Jade Spirit Marrow!

Murong Tian was shaken. He had searched for this marrow for years without luck, and yet this crazy woman had found it with a random point of her finger.

Twenty spirit stones for the spirit marrow, and she also landed Murong Tian as a lifeline. What a steal.

Lin Yaoyao gently stroked her bracelet, inwardly smug.

Who would have thought that the bracelet Lin Xuanzhong gave her that day was actually a treasure-hunting system, complete with a spirit-sense space?

Whenever a rare treasure appeared nearby, the system would proactively alert her.

The system had a shop. By recycling treasures, Lin Yaoyao could earn points to exchange for goods. Besides daily items, she could get spiritual roots, techniques, martial arts, pills, and even cultivation base. Whatever she wanted.

In a world where the strong ruled, now with the system’s help, Lin Yaoyao could cultivate too.

She had found the Purple Jade Spirit Marrow thanks to the system’s prompt.

Lin Yaoyao leaned close to Murong Tian and muttered, “Murong Tian, if you’re going to fake a marriage, it has to be me. You can’t wriggle out of it!”

Murong Tian said nothing, and Lin Yaoyao took that as consent.

“Lu Ruxue, climb that tree!”

Lin Yaoyao pointed at a nearby tree. Lu Ruxue’s face flushed red with rage, and she begged Bai Jingming to intercede.

“Miss Lin, could you, for my sake, change the bet?”

“No!”

Lin Yaoyao wouldn’t be swayed and refused him flat out.

Bai Jingming froze. Three years ago, Lin Yaoyao used to humble herself before him. Now she was so indifferent.

After a moment, Bai Jingming convinced himself it was just a woman’s petty jealousy, playing hard to get, trying to get his attention.

Lin Yaoyao had no time for a scum. She led the crowd in chanting, making Lu Ruxue imitate a pig climbing a tree.

“Pig climbing a tree, Lu Ruxue climbing a tree!”

“Lu Ruxue, go! Pig climbing a tree!”

“Pig climbing a tree, Lu Ruxue!”

Lin Yaoyao cheered the loudest, and the crowd, eager for entertainment, joined in with whoops and hollers.

Lu Ruxue was mortified, shoved and dragged to the tree. She could only steel herself and climb, ending up in a disheveled mess.

Lin Yaoyao laughed until she bent over. Good for her!

When she finally snapped out of it, she realized Murong Tian was nowhere to be found.

The treasure appraisal assembly began in earnest, and the major families sat down in order. Lin Yaoyao hadn’t expected her eldest brother and fourth brother to come.

Fourth Brother Lin Xiaotian had a grave heart ailment and stayed bedridden most of the year, never attending such events. Eldest Brother Lin Qingshan had shut himself away since his legs were crippled. What were they doing here today?

Third Brother Lin Feiyuan led Lin Yaoyao to sit beside him.

“Yaoyao, Father said today is your engagement day. On such an important occasion, the whole family has to be here to celebrate.”

Lin Yaoyao laughed awkwardly. The old man really doted on her.

The venue was packed, but Lin Yaoyao spotted Murong Tian in the VIP section at a glance. His whole body radiated coldness, his face fierce, and no one dared go near him.

Lin Yaoyao flashed her red lips and waved at him enthusiastically. Murong Tian sat there expressionless, not a muscle moving.

Lin Yaoyao laughed at herself. “I’m making eyes at a blind man now.”
