Chapter 20: White Cat, Black Cat

Lin Yaoyao’s heart lurched. Even through the mask, she could feel the chill in the Ghost Mask Yama’s gaze.

Was Murong Tian looking at her?

Oh no.

Their little tricks during the group battle just now had probably been seen through by Murong Tian long ago. As the referee, would he expose them in public?

Lin Yaoyao felt a twinge of guilt, but she kept a bright smile on her face as she waved at him. “Young Master Murong! Young Master Murong!”

“A Tian!”

“Little Tian Tian!”

That “Little Tian Tian” landed like a thunderbolt. Elder Hong nearly lost his composure as host.

All eyes in the arena turned to Lin Yaoyao and Murong Tian.

So the rumors from a while back weren’t baseless after all. The Lin family’s fifth miss and the Ghost Mask Yama really were a couple!

Murong Tian’s face was expressionless. His gaze had already drifted elsewhere.

Even Lin Feiyuan felt embarrassed for her. His sister’s fangirl disease was acting up again!

“Yaoyao, stop shouting! Father is still sitting up there.”

Murong Tian deliberately avoiding her suited Lin Yaoyao just fine.

Murong Tian was the examiner. Who would want the invigilator watching their every move during an exam, especially when they might be suspected of cheating?

The first round of group battle passed with a scare but no real danger. Lin Yaoyao and the others made it through safely.

From the high platform, Lin Xuanzhong watched Lin Yaoyao and Lin Feiyuan with mixed emotions. Were these really his children, the ones who used to be so wild and unruly?

The second round was a one-on-one arena match. Only the top ten would earn the right to enter the Tianxuan Secret Realm.

First came a random draw for pairs. The winners advanced to the top ten. After that was the challenge round, where any competitor could challenge any opponent. The final top ten were decided by ranking.

“Ancestors, protect me. Please, don’t let me draw someone at Foundation Building stage!”

Lu Yan’er shut her eyes and muttered without stopping.

“Please don’t let me draw a master!”

Lin Yaoyao pinched Lu Yan’er’s arm lightly. “Did you bring all your defensive gear?”

Lu Yan’er nodded. She had the golden silk armor on, and the Lu family’s Spirit-Calming Pearl was on her. The only thing she hadn’t brought was her father’s helmet.

Lin Yaoyao sighed at the depth of the Lu family’s resources. Their Spirit-Calming Pearl could withstand attacks at the Nascent Soul stage.

In less than a quarter of an hour, the draw results were out.

First match: Lin Yaoyao against Ye Xinlian of the Metal element!

Lin Yaoyao let out a silent sigh. Her luck was rotten.

Ye Xinlian was no pushover, at the seventh level of Qi Refining or above. What’s more, she was the Metal element’s junior sister, a famous beauty, the white moonlight of countless people.

If she beat Ye Xinlian, Lin Yaoyao figured, quite a few people would come looking for trouble in the challenge round later.

Lin Yaoyao’s match came first. Lu Yan’er and Lin Feiyuan both broke into a sweat for her.

How strong was his sister, really? Lin Feiyuan had no idea. He only knew that if Lin Yaoyao lost, his fifty thousand spirit stones would fly away.

“Yaoyao, don’t be nervous! You can definitely do it!”

Seeing that Lin Feiyuan was even more nervous than she was, Lin Yaoyao patted his chest before going on stage.

“Third Brother, don’t worry. Just wait to collect the money!”

A match between two great beauties of Tiandu Academy was naturally a feast for the eyes, and it stirred up a buzz below the stage.

“Lin Yaoyao is a pretty airhead. Ye Xinlian is an icy beauty. How could Lin Yaoyao possibly beat Ye Xinlian?”

“This match will definitely go to Junior Sister Ye!”

Someone in the crowd led the chant: “Junior Sister Ye, go! Junior Sister Ye, victory!”

The shouts merged into one, all of them supporting Ye Xinlian.

The only ones cheering for Lin Yaoyao were Lin Feiyuan, Lu Yan’er, and Gu Mingchun, and their voices were easily drowned out.

From the high platform, a voice rang out in support of Lin Yaoyao.

“Little Five, go! Little Five, go!”

Lin Xuanzhong had thrown his old face out the window. Lose the fight, don’t lose the face. He wouldn’t let anyone look down on his daughter.

On stage, Lin Yaoyao bowed to Ye Xinlian first. Ye Xinlian’s white robes fluttered, her bearing ethereal. No wonder she was so many people’s white moonlight.

Elder Hong gestured for the crowd to quiet down and announced the official start of the match.

“Elder Hong, please wait a moment. This disciple has something to ask the elders and seniors.”

Lin Yaoyao clasped her fists and bowed to Elder Hong, looking respectful and humble.

Elder Hong motioned for her to speak. After all, she was the Lin family’s fifth miss. He would give the Lin family that much face.

“This disciple would like to ask, what are the rules for this arena match?”

The rules?

Elder Hong thought for a moment, then answered, “On the arena, you just need to knock down your opponent, or have your opponent admit defeat!”

After hearing this, Lin Yaoyao bowed to True Person Li Qing.

“Dean, can this disciple understand it this way? No matter what method I use, as long as I can knock down my opponent or make them concede, I win.”

True Person Li Qing exchanged a few words with the great elder of the Carefree Sect beside him, the city lord of Yunlan City, and Murong Tian, then wore a pleased expression.

“As long as you don’t use demonic arts, everything else is permitted!”

That was exactly what she had been waiting to hear. This way, none of these old foxes could deny the result after she won. Lin Yaoyao secretly rejoiced.

“This disciple understands. The dean is wise. Whether it’s a white cat or a black cat, the one that catches the mouse is a good cat.”

White cat or black cat, the one that catches the mouse is a good cat.

That saying was new. Murong Tian’s lips curved up as he wondered what Lin Yaoyao was hiding up her sleeve.

A gong rang, and the match officially began.

Ye Xinlian came on fierce, throwing killing moves one after another. With the whole crowd cheering for her, she wanted to defeat Lin Yaoyao in just a few moves, which would show off her extraordinary skill.

Too bad she was in too much of a hurry.

Ye Xinlian’s attacks couldn’t even get close to Lin Yaoyao. Protected by Lin Qingshan’s life tablet, Lin Yaoyao deflected every strike with ease.

Ye Xinlian, since you want to end this quickly, this young lady will grant your wish.

Lin Yaoyao gave a light leap, spun in a circle above Ye Xinlian, and attacked her with no spiritual power at all.

“Heavenly Maiden Scatters Flowers!”

Colored powder rained down from the air, red, black, purple, yellow, like multicolored snowflakes.

Ye Xinlian had no time to react. Her hair, her face, her snow-white dress were all stained in a mess of colors, as if she had fallen into a vat of dye.

“Lin Yaoyao!”

Ye Xinlian, usually so aloof and noble, dressed in white all year round and carrying herself like she was above everyone else, now looked so pathetic that many in the crowd covered their mouths to stifle their laughter.

Ye Xinlian was a complete mess, all the arrogance from when she first stepped on stage gone. She shouted, “Ah… Lin Yaoyao, I’ll kill you!”

Burning with rage, Ye Xinlian raised her sword and swung, but after one move she stopped, began scratching left and right, and twisted her whole body, without any regard for her image.

Seeing Ye Xinlian so out of sorts, the crowd below shook their heads.

Lin Yaoyao saw that Ye Xinlian was rattled and made her move, ending the fight in one strike. Before the other girl could dodge, Lin Yaoyao’s sword was already pressed against her fair neck.

“Senior Sister Ye, I suggest you concede while you still can. If you use spiritual power, it’ll get even itchier. When that happens, I’m afraid you won’t be able to stop yourself from tearing off all your clothes!”
