Chapter 16: A Waste Trip and a Broken Engagement

She had made the trip for nothing, and she might end up taking the blame. She couldn’t just walk away empty-handed!

Lin Yaoyao spotted a Mystic-grade artifact on the shelf. She figured it should be worth at least a few points.

“System, system, how many points can this artifact get me?”

[Sorry, Host. This system does not accept such an item. The treasure-hunting system only recovers treasures that you yourself have personally discovered or retrieved.]

‘What the heck? Since when was there such a ridiculous rule?’

“Stupid system, are you deliberately making things difficult for me? Did you just tack on that condition?”

[Host, you misunderstand. This system was developed on the principle that labor is glorious, with a core logic that you must handle everything personally.]

‘Labor is glorious!!! Handle everything personally!!!’

‘Who was the dimwit who designed this system?’

Using the Lin family’s treasures to exchange for points was out of the question. No shortcuts there.

She had some beast cores left over from last time in the Trial Tower. Lin Yaoyao felt around in her pocket and decided to try them as a last resort.

“Stupid system, I got these beast cores from the Trial Tower. Can you exchange them for points?”

[Ding. Each beast core can be exchanged for twenty points. There are thirty-six in total. Congratulations, Host, you have received 720 points.]

720 points. A bit more than expected.

“System, is there something in the shop that can make people unable to move?”

Lin Yaoyao had finally scraped together some points, so she needed to spend them where they counted and get the best value.

[Yes. An Elementary Immobilization Talisman can keep anyone below the Golden Core stage immobile for the time it takes an incense stick to burn.]

‘Elementary? That means there are higher-level ones.’

“Would an Advanced Immobilization Talisman be more powerful?”

Lin Yaoyao got excited. With such an amazing system shop, she could strut around this world from now on.

[Sorry, Host. Your current level is too low. Advanced Immobilization Talismans are not sold to you.]

‘It even plays favorites and looks down on people like that. It really is a stupid system.’

In one second, Lin Yaoyao was back to reality. She might as well be careful and buy only what she could afford.

An Elementary Immobilization Talisman cost 200 points each. She turned it over in her mind, asked questions for a long time, and still didn’t buy right away.

The system couldn’t help complaining: [Sigh. You are the stingiest Host I have ever been bound to.]

“Yeah, and you’re the most money-grubbing system I’ve ever met.”

Lin Yaoyao shot back. Silence surrounded her. The system protested with silence.

The Lin family warehouse being cleaned out was a big deal. Lin Yaoyao had to tell the old man as soon as possible. She had just reached the front hall of the main courtyard, and before father and daughter could speak, a servant rushed in to report: the Zhang family from Yunzhou City had arrived.

Zhang Lingyu, the eldest daughter of the Zhang family, had long been betrothed to Lin Qingshan. The two families were in-laws.

The Zhangs had brought quite a few people. Besides Zhang Lingyu, Zhang Fengye, the head of the Zhang family, had also come. Lin Xuanzhong sent someone to notify Lin Qingshan to come to the front hall so as not to seem rude.

Under Lin Xuanzhong’s introduction, Lin Yaoyao greeted the Zhang family members one by one.

Zhang Lingyu and Lin Qingshan had been engaged five years ago, back when Lin Yaoyao hadn’t transmigrated into this world yet. This was her first time seeing her future sister-in-law. She had tender eyes, a slender figure, a fair face, and a delicate, pitiable air.

So this was the kind of fragile woman her big brother liked. A light touch and she looked like she might cry at any moment. A few tears and a man’s heart would melt.

‘Tears are their weapon!’

Lin Yaoyao thought of Lu Yan’er’s way of crying, all snot and tears, wailing at the top of her lungs. That was mostly just clumsy and honest.

Zhang Fengye exchanged pleasantries with Lin Xuanzhong, his face full of smiles. He seemed warm, but there was something forced about it. He kept probing about Lin Qingshan’s injuries.

Lin Qingshan appeared in the front hall in a wheelchair. Zhang Lingyu stood up abruptly, a stiff smile on her face.

“Brother Qingshan!”

Even though Zhang Lingyu tried hard to hide it, Lin Yaoyao caught a flicker of secret glee in her eyes, a hint of relief.

From the moment the Zhang family had stepped into the front hall, Lin Yaoyao had a bad feeling. This trip was not just to see her brother.

Lin Qingshan nodded in response, then bowed to Zhang Fengye.

“Uncle Zhang.”

His eyes were red, his voice hoarse. He must not have slept all night. Lin Yaoyao quickly poured him a cup of tea to moisten his throat.

“Qingshan, take care of yourself. Uncle believes you will get better.”

Everyone knew that injuries to muscles and bones caused by spiritual power were not so easy to recover from.

Zhang Fengye’s words sounded nice, but Lin Yaoyao didn’t feel even a trace of sincerity. Lin Qingshan didn’t respond either. The atmosphere turned awkward, and Lin Xuanzhong quickly stepped in to smooth things over.

“Thank you for your concern, Family Head Zhang, for coming all this way to see my son. Since Lingyu is here too, Qingshan should take you all around Tiandu City.”

Lin Yaoyao shook her head. The old man was probably going to be disappointed.

Just as she expected, Zhang Fengye suddenly pulled Zhang Lingyu down and knelt before Lin Xuanzhong.

“Family Head Lin, the reason I came today… I have a presumptuous request. My daughter is frail and has little fortune. She is not worthy of your eldest son. Please break off the engagement.”

‘So they came to break off the engagement!’ The Zhang family looked humble on the surface, but in truth they were pushing Lin Xuanzhong into a corner.

The Zhang family of Yunzhou City was an insignificant clan in the Tiandu Kingdom. The Lin family had once been completely out of their reach.

Five years ago, Lin Qingshan had been injured and knocked unconscious outside Yunzhou City. Zhang Lingyu happened to save him.

Lin Xuanzhong had planned to send money and treasures to show his gratitude, but to his surprise, Zhang Fengye proposed a marriage between the two families.

The Lin family was one of the four great clans in the Tiandu Kingdom. Lin Qingshan was gifted and a young prodigy. Many beautiful young ladies from good families admired him and wanted a marriage alliance with the Lin family.

Zhang Lingyu, however, was ordinary in both family background and natural talent. Anyone with eyes could see that the Zhang family was trying to marry up.

While he was recovering in Yunzhou City, Lin Qingshan and Zhang Lingyu spent every day together. He saw that she was a kind person and that she had saved his life, so he agreed to the marriage.

To make Zhang Lingyu feel secure, Lin Qingshan sent betrothal gifts in a grand manner, too many to count. He gave the Zhang family plenty of face.

According to the agreement, they were to marry after the new year. But now the Zhang family was here to break off the engagement.

“Break off the engagement? Family Head Zhang, you must be joking.”

Back then, Zhang Fengye had bent over backward and humbled himself before Lin Xuanzhong to get this match for his daughter. And now he was doing this. Lin Xuanzhong couldn’t accept it all at once, and his voice turned hard.

“Lingyu, what do you think?”

Lin Qingshan looked at Zhang Lingyu. His voice was calm. Calmer than Lin Yaoyao had expected.

Zhang Lingyu raised her head to glance at Lin Qingshan, tears welling up in her eyes. “Brother Qingshan, engagements are a matter of parental and matchmaker decisions. I’ll do as my father arranges.”

‘The gentlest words, the most heartless message.’

Lin Yaoyao looked at the two people kneeling on the floor and her anger surged. Her big brother’s legs were paralyzed, and the Zhang family chose this moment to break off the engagement. Her poor brother was taking a hit to both body and heart.
