Chapter 11: The Demon Beasts’ Plea

“Stay close to me. I can sense the auras of those two demon beasts!”

Before Lin Feiyuan could react, Lin Yaoyao had already walked deeper in. Gu Mingchun followed without a word.

Left with no choice, Lu Yan’er steeled herself and trailed behind.

The narrow, dim passage allowed only one person through. Lin Yaoyao took the lead, with Lin Feiyuan right behind her. Gu Mingchun was third, but since Lu Yan’er was too scared to take the rear, he let her walk ahead of him.

After the long, narrow stretch, the path opened up. The four kept their earlier formation.

They were almost at the demon beasts’ hideout when Lin Yaoyao stopped.

The sudden halt put the other three on alert.

“Yaoyao? What’s wrong?” Lu Yan’er whispered.

Lin Yaoyao didn’t answer. She gestured for Lu Yan’er to be quiet, then signaled to Gu Mingchun in the back, telling him to move to the left.

Gu Mingchun said nothing and shifted left. Lin Yaoyao shook her head. He kept going until he reached a spot where he could conceal himself, and she motioned for him to hide there.

Then she had Lu Yan’er take cover in the far-right corner, across from Gu Mingchun.

Lu Yan’er had no idea what Lin Yaoyao was planning, and she didn’t dare ask. She only watched Lin Yaoyao whisper a few words into Lin Feiyuan’s ear before he headed off in another direction.

Lin Yaoyao went on alone. After twenty or thirty meters, she stopped before a patch of grass. She turned around, lit a torch, and tossed it into the grass.

Following her instructions, Lin Feiyuan had circled to the other side of the grass. He lit his torch too. Attacked from both ends, the fire spread quickly, and in moments the grass had turned into a sea of flames.

‘Ten! Nine!’

‘Six! Five…’

Lin Yaoyao kept counting silently. How long could those two beasts hold out?

“Ah… save us!”

Two blazing fireballs burst out of the grass. The fur on the demon beasts had caught fire, and they rolled on the ground in agony.

This was the perfect moment to subdue them. Gu Mingchun and Lu Yan’er emerged from the shadows, ready to attack.

Lin Yaoyao held them back. Instead, she used her Frost Palm to put out the flames on the beasts.

Lu Yan’er didn’t understand why Lin Yaoyao was bothering. If they killed the beasts now, they could take their beast cores. Why make things so complicated and waste spiritual power?

“Yaoyao, let me take their cores for you!”

Lu Yan’er didn’t want to miss such a good chance to earn merit. She wanted to show everyone what she could do.

“Please, immortals, spare our lives!”

With two thuds, the demon beasts knelt and kowtowed, begging for mercy.

This…

Lu Yan’er looked at Lin Yaoyao. She’d expected a brutal fight, but before they’d even lifted a hand, the other side had already begged for mercy.

‘Spare them or not?’ Lu Yan’er was baffled. Being called “immortal” did feel pretty good.

“I can spare you. A life for a life. Your cave connects to the dens of other demon beasts. Lead us there, and once we take their cores, we’ll let you go.”

On the map, Lin Yaoyao had seen a gathering of demon beasts not far from this cave. There were at least a dozen or so beasts there.

The other three didn’t object to her proposal.

“We mean what we say. We won’t go back on our word.”

Seeing the two beasts stay silent, Lin Yaoyao extended the olive branch once more.

The two demon beasts glanced at each other, then both lowered their heads. They had reached a silent understanding.

‘Facing death without flinching?’

‘Between their lives and their principles, the two beasts had chosen righteousness over life?’

Lin Yaoyao briefly wondered if she was seeing things.

Demon beasts were born cruel and bloodthirsty. To stay alive, they should have no “bottom line” at all!

“Hurry and lead the way. Once we capture the other beasts, we’ll release you immediately!”

Lu Yan’er watched the two beasts kneeling there in their sorry state, and a trace of pity rose in her.

“Go ahead. We will never betray our own clan.”

The two demon beasts closed their eyes, waiting for death.

Lin Feiyuan had little patience. He raised his sword and stabbed at one of the beasts without hesitation.

“Third Brother, wait!”

Lin Yaoyao quickly reached out and blocked his sword.

Lin Feiyuan was taken aback. Lin Yaoyao had stopped his blade with no effort at all. But what shocked him even more was what she said next.

“You may go.”

‘Lin Yaoyao was letting these two beasts go?’

They’d gone through no small trouble to catch them. Now she wanted to set them free. Lin Feiyuan was the first to object, and he moved to strike the beasts again.

“Yaoyao, we can’t let them go. Without their cores, we won’t pass the assessment!”

Lin Yaoyao stood in front of the beasts and coaxed him. “Third Brother, I already found a demon beast gathering. There are at least a dozen or so beasts there! Let them go!”

She signaled the two beasts to leave. They couldn’t believe it, but slowly, they climbed to their feet.

“Go on, get out of here!”

The two beasts still hadn’t come to their senses and moved slowly and clumsily. Lu Yan’er hurried them along.

Lin Feiyuan lowered his sword and asked, half doubtful, “Where is that demon beast gathering?”

“Follow this path straight ahead. Once you pass a waterfall, you’ll be there!”

The system map’s marker couldn’t be wrong. Lin Yaoyao was certain it was a gathering of demon beasts.

Thud, thud. The two beasts knelt before them again!

Lu Yan’er was completely baffled. Weren’t demon beasts fierce and cruel? Why were these two groveling and “crying”?

“Please, immortals, spare our clan!”

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

Thud!

The two beasts stayed on their knees, knocking their heads against the ground again and again.

“How ungrateful! We spared you out of kindness, and now you’re latching onto us!”

Lin Feiyuan was fuming. They’d finally caught these two beasts, and his sister had insisted on letting them go. Now the beasts were getting bolder, even daring to make demands. ‘Did they really take me for a pushover?’

One of the demon beasts said, trembling, “Immortals, our clan has been trapped here for tens of thousands of years. We have never done anything wicked. Why do you want to wipe us out?”

‘Why kill them? To pass the academy assessment?’

Lin Yaoyao didn’t know how to answer that.

Lu Yan’er had grown up listening to her clan’s elders tell stories of the Great Emperor subduing demon beasts. Did killing a demon beast need a reason?

“Every demon beast deserves to die. That is the mission of us cultivators. If you want to blame someone, blame yourselves for being born as demon beasts, born cruel.”

‘Born cruel?’

She looked at the two beasts, burned pitch-black, begging for mercy with a cowardly look that was almost comical. Were they really born cruel?

Lin Yaoyao remembered the pool of blood at the cave entrance. She couldn’t be fooled by how they looked right now.

“You live on flesh and blood. You must have killed other living creatures. You are not innocent!”
