X
Before this life began, I had been certain of one thing.
Even though I had never defeated Happy, even though I had been dragged through 131 losses, even though I had ultimately given up—
I believed that I knew Happy better than anyone in this world.
And yet—
That certainty was crumbling.
It didn’t take long for doubt to take its place.
The Happy I had encountered today—
She acted as if her past self had been an act, as if she had been toying with me until I finally crossed the line.
She was nothing like the Happy I had learned from 131 deaths.
She recorded my voice on her phone.
She forced her love on me.
She used violence unlike any magical girl should.
She did everything she could to break me mentally.
And now—
She was fighting with her own mascot, Lunt.
During my time as Queen, the two of them had always been close.
They had cared for each other, looked after each other—
But now?
They were spitting venom, their faces twisted in anger.
They looked at each other like mortal enemies.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Happy.
This isn’t your choice to make.
That woman is your enemy.
You can’t let her live.”
Lunt sat on the bathroom sink, where the most dangerous spells were cast.
If I so much as brushed against that spot,
I would suffer unimaginable pain.
But he didn’t care.
Instead, he let out a long sigh and started lecturing her.
His expression—
It looked exactly like mine when I had been struck by Happy’s magic.
A face full of frustration and exhaustion.
Happy had lost his trust.
“She won’t be the Queen of Darkmoon anymore,” she said.
“That’s the same as defeating her, isn’t it?
Do I really need to kill her?”
Her voice held not even a shred of trust in him.
It was cold.
I almost forgot to breathe just listening to them.
“Wake up, Happy.”
“You’re a magical girl.
Your duty is to fight for love and peace, to defeat the forces of evil.”
“And what do you think I’m doing?”
“…What?”
“I love her.
And if she stays by my side,
Darkmoon won’t be able to continue as they are now.
The world will finally know peace.
So why are you so desperate to spill blood?”
As Lunt scolded her, Happy buried herself deeper in my arms.
I barely held back a laugh.
She was clinging to me harder than an ally,
Yet acting more like an enemy than anyone else.
“And did I ask to become a magical girl?”
She turned her glare to Lunt.
“You’re the one who forced this on me.”
“So you hated it?”
He scoffed, a mocking grin forming on his face.
“This was nothing but a blessing to you.
You gained everything.”
His voice dripped with sarcasm,
His sharp feline eyes narrowing.
“If Yeres isn’t with you,
You’re nothing.
So don’t you dare try to take her away from me.”
Did she hate the coldness in his gaze?
Or was it because his words hit too close to home?
Either way, Happy tightened her grip on me.
She pressed her back against my chest, searching for warmth greater than the steaming bathwater.
I bit my lip.
I wanted to push her away.
I had to force myself not to.
“…Tch.”
Lunt scoffed.
“She wants to run away from you, you know.”
Damn it.
I had hidden my expression, but Lunt had seen through me.
I braced myself.
If Happy noticed, she would turn on me instantly.
She would hurt me again.
I clenched my teeth, shut my eyes—
“…I know.”
I froze.
Happy didn’t move.
She didn’t even flinch.
Was that…
Was that relief I felt?
No.
I shouldn’t feel relieved.
I should have let her hurt me.
Why?
Because if she realized Lunt was right,
She would either kill me or give up on me.
Either way, I wouldn’t be trapped like this.
The thought was correct.
I couldn’t live like this forever.
I would never love her.
But even when I tried to push her away,
It didn’t work.
Her grip on me tightened, her hands trembling slightly.
“I know.”
“But I’m not giving up.”
“Yeres Sis is mine.”
At that moment, Lunt and I both realized something.
She was willing to do anything to keep me.
There was nothing she wouldn’t do.
A sigh escaped me—silent, exhausted.
Lunt, on the other hand—
He let out a massive, exaggerated sigh, his shoulders and head rising and falling dramatically.
“I wouldn’t have cared if you fell for anyone else.”
“Even if it was another girl? That wouldn’t bother you?”
“I don’t care about that.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
“That you fell for your greatest enemy.”
“Your love is twisted.”
Happy’s fingers twitched.
“Say that one more time.”
Her voice dropped, dangerous.
“If you do…
I won’t let it slide.”
“Oh?”
Lunt smirked.
“And what are you gonna do?”
“I’ll show you the worst thing you can imagine.”
“Then go ahead.”
His tail flicked, unimpressed.
“Let’s hear it.
Show me how amazing your imagination is.”
Happy took a slow breath.
Then,
She whispered—
“I’ll quit being a magical girl.”
“…Ha.”
It didn’t end with just one sigh.
Lunt, who had already sighed twice, now looked at Happy with nothing but disappointment.
“That was a pretty good threat, Happy.
Not bad at all.
With how powerful you’ve become, quitting as a magical girl would cause some serious problems.”
But it wasn’t anger.
It wasn’t resignation.
It was disappointment.
“But tell me…
Do you really think you can pull it off?”
“What?”
“When all the problems you’ve avoided by being a magical girl come crashing back,
Do you honestly think you can handle it?”
Silence.
For the first time, Happy didn’t answer immediately.
“…As long as Yeres Sis is with me, it doesn’t matter.”
When she finally spoke—
How should I describe it?
Her voice, always so confident,
Now held a hesitation I had never heard before.
Even Lunt reacted.
I furrowed my brows, my face filled with confusion.
Lunt, on the other hand, simply shook his head,
Looking at Happy with pity.
“Do you really think she’ll love you back?”
“Even if she does…”
“Do you have any idea how long that would take?”
“I…”
“We’re done with this conversation.”
Lunt cut her off immediately.
He jumped down from the sink, shaking off his fur.
Then, without hesitation, he cast a spell.
“Her mother is awake.
Get out of the bathroom.
I’ll handle cleanup.”
Where had all their anger gone?
Just moments ago, they had been at each other’s throats.
Now, they were working together flawlessly,
Like teammates against a common enemy.
Lunt evaporated the water with his magic,
And within seconds,
The bathtub was empty,
The moisture on my skin completely gone.
“Get up.”
Happy pulled me out of the tub, practically dragging me toward the door.
She was rushing, moving so quickly she nearly stepped on one of her own magic traps.
We exited just as footsteps echoed from the second floor.
Someone was coming down the stairs.
Based on their conversation,
I immediately knew who it was.
It was Happy’s mother.
“No…!”
Happy didn’t want to be seen.
She panicked, her entire body tense.
And when I thought about it—
It made sense.
A stranger in her house,
Taking a bath with her daughter in the middle of the night?
It was a nightmare scenario.
She couldn’t afford to get caught.
So I followed her without resistance.
Even when she shoved me into her room.
Even when she covered my mouth with her trembling hands.
I thought I understood.
Until I heard her mother speak.
Knock, knock, knock.
“You’re still awake?”
Her voice—
It was cold.
Not the voice of a loving mother.
Not even the voice of someone annoyed from being woken up.
It was rigid, detached, full of unspoken threats.
“Ah… N-No.
I just woke up to use the bathroom.”
It wasn’t anger.
If she were angry,
Her voice would have been lower, rougher.
No—
This wasn’t about being woken up.
This was just… how she always spoke to Happy.
“Hurry up and go to bed.
It’s already past 2 AM.”
“…Yes.
Sorry.”
Happy flinched with every word.
Her hands trembled against my skin.
She was scared.
And Lunt?
He let out his third sigh of the night.
“Did you finish everything you were supposed to do today?”
“…I cleaned my room, did my homework, and finished dinner.”
“And?”
“I also completed my academy assignments and left my phone in the living room.”
“…You need to work harder.”
“…Yes.
I understand.”
Finally, the footsteps faded,
Signaling her mother’s departure.
Happy exhaled a long breath, her entire body relaxing.
Then—
She grabbed the underwear Lunt had brought earlier.
And put them on me.
“…You get it now, don’t you?”
“What?”
“You can’t quit being a magical girl.”
Happy didn’t answer immediately.
The silence stretched long enough for me to sort through my thoughts.
Because this—
This was valuable information.
…No.
What was I thinking?
Valuable?
Like I could use this?
I had already seen it before—
Whenever I pushed Hyun-seo instead of Happy,
She evolved at terrifying speeds.
Had I learned nothing?
Did I still not understand my situation?
I needed to stop.
“…I don’t care.”
It was obvious why that thought had come to mind.
Because Happy hugged me again.
Her warmth—
Her love—
It wrapped around me, squeezing the air from my lungs.
“As long as you love me,
None of it matters.”
At first, I denied it.
Then, I doubted it.
But now—
Now, a different certainty took root inside me.
I will never escape Happy’s grasp.
I will be stuck here forever.
No.
I have to figure this out.
I have to understand what just happened.
Why do I think that?
Because if I do—
I can escape.
Can I?
Yeres.
You can’t give up yet.
Whether this was hope or just the beginning of more suffering,
I had no way of knowing.
