Chapter 12: Cold

Su Wanqing had imagined Zhou Mingyuan’s death countless times over the past few days being hit by a car, being hacked to death, being finely minced into meat paste.

But she had overlooked one possibility—the police might discover he was a murderer.

Su Wanqing immediately followed behind Lin Cheng, eyes fixed on Zhou Mingyuan with anticipation.

The bastard’s expression hadn’t changed at all.

Let’s see if you can stay this calm when the police start questioning you.

Lin Cheng was the first to walk out of the classroom, feeling a bit surprised.

The police actually showed up…

There was nothing about the police in the plot. Whether it was Zhou Mingyuan killing Su Wanqing or her parents, or even his inhuman actions after going to university, they never appeared.

Zhou Mingyuan followed behind, his face impassive.

Both police officers waiting outside were young men.

“Regarding Su Wanqing’s death, you two are the primary witnesses. We’ve asked once before, but we need to go over it again. Tell us—what exactly did you do that day?” one of them asked coldly.

The other officer gave a reassuring smile. “It’s okay, just relax. Be honest and tell us what happened.”

“I was going for a run that day and happened to pass by,” Lin Cheng said calmly. “I saw Su Wanqing. I had a bit of a crush on her, so I wanted to go say hello. But she suddenly rushed into the road, and a truck came crashing toward her. I ran forward on impulse, but I couldn’t save her.”

“I chased Wanqing out of the house,” Zhou Mingyuan said in a low voice, head lowered as if weighed down by guilt. “She’d had a fight with her parents. I just wanted to persuade her to go back, but I didn’t expect there to be a big truck at the intersection… It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t been driving, this wouldn’t have happened. Wanqing wouldn’t have died.”

The two officers exchanged a glance.

The one with the cold expression narrowed his eyes at Zhou Mingyuan. “Are you sure that’s the truth? What you’ve said doesn’t quite match what we’ve found. This is your last chance. Otherwise, we’ll have to take you to the station.”

The smiling officer’s tone also turned cold. “Yes, Zhou Mingyuan. It’s better for everyone if we just tell the truth.”

Lin Cheng raised an eyebrow.

Are they deliberately targeting Zhou Mingyuan? Did they really find something?

Su Wanqing’s face lit up in excitement. Arrest him! Execute him!

She glared at Zhou Mingyuan with vicious hatred, wishing she could see him dragged to his death right there.

Zhou Mingyuan looked dazed for a moment, genuinely confused.

“I’ve already told you what happened. Did you find something else at the scene? If so, please tell me. Maybe I’ve forgotten something. If Wanqing’s death really wasn’t an accident, I’ll do whatever I can to find out the truth.”

His voice was calm, his gaze resolute, his tone full of sincerity.

“I’ll kill you! What truth are you talking about, you bastard!!”

Su Wanqing trembled with rage. She wanted to grab a stick and smash Zhou Mingyuan’s head to a pulp.

Bastard, bastard!

Her emotions surged violently, her resentment and anger boiling over—and with it, the air temperature around them began to drop.

Zhou Mingyuan shivered.

“It’s so cold… Did the temperature just drop?”

He looked up at the sky, blinking against the sunlight.

It was supposed to be thirty-four degrees today. No rain. No wind. But it felt freezing.

“Aren’t you cold?” he asked instinctively.

“Cold?” The two police officers looked at him strangely.

The sun wasn’t scorching, but it was still hot. They had walked all the way from the police station, drenched in sweat. There was no way they could feel cold.

Lin Cheng also glanced at Zhou Mingyuan.

Is this idiot going crazy? Falling apart like this?

Zhou Mingyuan pulled his school uniform tighter around himself. “If there’s nothing else, may I return to the classroom?”

The once-friendly officer fell silent for a few seconds, then nodded. “Alright, you can go back.”

Zhou Mingyuan quickly returned to class, sat at his desk, and rubbed his hands together.

He could feel warmth slowly returning.

What’s going on today? Why did it suddenly feel so cold? Am I sick?

I should go get checked at the hospital after school.

Outside, the police questioned Lin Cheng next—asking what he thought of Zhou Mingyuan and whether Su Wanqing’s death seemed like a homicide or an accident.

Lin Cheng hesitated. Something about the officers didn’t sit right.

If this was a formal investigation, why question Zhou Mingyuan and let him go so quickly?

More importantly, both officers looked far too young to be handling such a serious case alone. If Su Wanqing’s death was truly a murder, there would at least be a senior officer present.

Could Zhou Mingyuan have sent them to test me?

After a moment of thought, Lin Cheng responded, “I don’t have much of an opinion of Zhou Mingyuan. I only know he and Su Wanqing were childhood sweethearts. If he really killed her, I hope the investigation uncovers the truth. If it was an accident, I have nothing more to say.”

“Alright then, you can return to class too,” one officer replied, voice slightly discouraged.

Lin Cheng walked back to his seat.

He now felt even more sure—these two officers had acted on their own judgment, suspecting that Su Wanqing’s case wasn’t so simple.

Li Xiaoran leaned over and whispered, concern in her eyes, “Lin Cheng, what happened?”

“Nothing major. Just more questions about Su Wanqing’s death,” he replied.

“Do you think her death wasn’t an accident?”

Li Xiaoran’s eyes widened. She lowered her voice even more and said, “There’s been a rumor going around the class… that someone might have caused her death. Someone saw a girl sticking needles into a doll that looked like Wanqing at the school gate.”

“Huh??” Lin Cheng immediately sat up straighter.

What caught his attention wasn’t the doll—but the girl.

Could that girl be the female lead?

Seeing Lin Cheng’s reaction, Li Xiaoran continued,

“I heard it from someone else. Apparently, the girl doesn’t go to our school, but she seems to be rich. A driver drops her off and picks her up in a car. Her house is in the same direction as Zhou Mingyuan’s.”

Lin Cheng’s interest deepened.

Could this really be the female lead?

According to the plot, Zhou Mingyuan killed Su Wanqing and all the powerful people in her family before going to university… all because he listened to the female lead.

Meanwhile, Su Wanqing frowned as she listened to Xiaoran’s words, her heart still brimming with rage.

Someone was sticking needles into a doll of me?

Even if that stuff works or not, the fact is—I’m already dead.

And what were those police officers doing? They asked a few questions and left. That’s it?

She clenched her jaw in fury.

“Lin Cheng,” Li Xiaoran whispered again, “I heard that girl’s been waiting by the school gate for the past few days. I haven’t seen her myself, but… should we go check it out after class?”
