Chapter 8: Night

The mountain wind blew through the forest, rustling the leaves and masking the more subtle sounds in the distance.
After climbing for about half an hour, they reached a semi-open platform halfway up the mountain, where the city’s night view stretched out before them.
Dots of light twinkled across the landscape like a river of stars in motion.

It was already nearing eleven at night.

Lin Cheng suggested they take a break.

The two found a large, flat rock and sat down. Li Xiaoran naturally settled next to Lin Cheng and took out a bottle of water to hand to him.

“Have some water? Your hand’s still injured—let me open it for you.”

She thoughtfully twisted off the cap and held the bottle to Lin Cheng’s lips.

Lin Cheng, a little unused to such intimacy, turned his head slightly and reached for it himself.
“I can do it myself…”

“Oh, don’t be so polite!”

Li Xiaoran insisted, bringing the bottle even closer. A few drops splashed onto Lin Cheng’s chin.

Seemingly satisfied with this subtle intimacy, she pulled out a tissue and moved as if to wipe it for him.

Floating above their heads, Su Wanqing let out a heavy sigh.

Suddenly, her gaze drifted down the mountain path they had come from.

Beneath the layered tree shadows and the thick darkness of night, a dark figure stood silently at a bend several dozen meters below where Lin Cheng and Li Xiaoran were resting.

Moonlight filtered through the gaps in the branches, casting pale streaks of light that just happened to outline the figure’s silhouette.

Tall and slender.
A face Su Wanqing could never forget, not even as a ghost.

Zhou Mingyuan!

A chill surged through Su Wanqing’s entire body.

Why is he here?!
When did he start following them?!

Zhou Mingyuan’s eyes—deep and shadowed in the darkness—were locked on Lin Cheng and Li Xiaoran with eerie focus.

Is he planning to hurt Lin Cheng?
The same way he hurt me back then?!

Panic swept over Su Wanqing.

No—I have to warn Lin Cheng!

She turned to him sharply.

“Lin Cheng! Zhou Mingyuan is down there! He’s going to hurt you!”

Su Wanqing shouted desperately into his ear, using all her willpower.
At the same time, she focused her thoughts with everything she had, trying to push him, or shake the nearby branches to create some kind of warning.

Whoosh!

The leaves around the platform suddenly rustled violently, the sound much louder than the mountain wind.
A few swirling leaves fell, striking Lin Cheng and Li Xiaoran.

Su Wanqing’s figure also grew even more transparent.

“Aiya!”

Li Xiaoran yelped as the falling leaves startled her, her hand—which had been about to wrap around Lin Cheng—jerking back in alarm.

Lin Cheng abruptly looked up. That feeling from earlier—of being watched—now surged to its peak.

It was like a needle pricking the center of his forehead.
Without thinking, he stood up, pulling Li Xiaoran to her feet as well.
He stared warily down the darkened mountain path.

“What’s wrong?” Li Xiaoran asked, confused.

Lin Cheng didn’t answer. A chilling sense of danger crawled up his spine.

He kept his eyes fixed on the pitch-black trail below.
Somewhere down there—he was certain—another pair of eyes was staring right back at him.

The feeling had never been stronger.

Someone really was watching him.
