Chapter 16: The Man From Her Last Dream

It was a warm dream. At the moment she believed she had no one by her side, the hand extended toward her had been remarkably steady.

How many more times she tested him after that, only he and she would ever know.

“I don’t trust you, mister.”

“Good. Don’t.”

As she walked down the street holding the man’s hand, arguing with him over and over, they bought a pile of self-defense items. After listening to him explain how to use each one, they headed toward his house.

But they ended up at a hospital.

After spending two days sleeping outdoors, her condition was far worse than either of them had realized. She had a high fever. She hadn’t even known she was sick until she saw a doctor and was immediately admitted.

She insisted she didn’t need to stay hospitalized and tried to leave, but after arguing with him and finally lying down in the hospital bed, she slept for an entire day.

Whenever she drifted awake in the middle of her fever, the man was there.

Close to the bed, far from the bed, it didn’t matter. He was always somewhere inside the room.

Her whole body hurt so much that she briefly wondered if he really was going to hold her funeral, just as he’d said.

She even resented him for a moment, thinking his words had somehow brought this upon her. Then, burning with fever and tears, she felt relieved simply because he was beside her.

It was a fickle heart.

And a very strange night.

Only after another day passed did Go Yi-jae finally open her eyes fully.

Her body felt refreshed.

The man was asleep beside her.

She stared at him for a long time without even breathing, startled by how defenseless he looked.

She had been fooled because he smiled all the time.

In truth, he was a large man with a cold, imposing presence.

The longer she looked, the more things she noticed for the first time, his eyelashes were long and dark; it was fortunate he was handsome, because otherwise his expression would have seemed downright vicious; and his features were strikingly sharp.

“You’re not running away?”

He asked without even opening his eyes.

Go Yi-jae sucked in a breath like a guilty person. She had been staring for quite a while without realizing he was awake.

“Or were you checking whether I was really asleep and got distracted by how handsome I am?”

The man opened his eyes and studied her face as though deciding which answer was correct.

She frowned immediately.

She didn’t want him to know.

“…Give me some water.”

“Already ordering me around? You’ve got talent, kid.”

He discarded his teasing curiosity and put on his usual smile again.

He smiled while handing her the cup.

He smiled while taking the empty cup back.

The way he kept grinning made him seem slightly broken.

“Kid, what’s your name? I’m Chae Ju-han.”

“How old are you?”

“It’s rude to ask a man his age, kid.”

“How old are you?”

“Hahaha. You really are something else, Go Yi-jae.”

He already knew.

Yet he had deliberately asked her name.

Much later, he told her that it was because this was their new beginning, and that’s why he had introduced himself and asked her name in return.

At the time, Go Yi-jae suddenly realized he was much too young for her to keep calling him “mister.” She rolled the word oppa around in her mouth.

But she swallowed it back down.

Because the man had stroked her matted hair, bent down, and sniffed the top of her head.

“You smell kind of funky. But also savory. Maybe a little salty.”

“Ah! Seriously!”

He really was an awful tease.

He’d managed to make her run to the bathroom on her own.

Maybe because she’d remembered such an embarrassing memory, her body felt unbearably hot.

Could the warmth of a dream seep into reality?

Her entire body felt heavy too, and Go Yi-jae let out a groan and shifted.

She had never moved around recklessly in her tiny six-pyeong room. If she moved too much, she’d slam her arms and legs into the walls.

It was caution learned through countless bruises.

“Awake?”

A man’s voice sounded right beside her ear.

The impossible closeness sent chills down the back of her neck, and her heart pounded.

Chae Ju-han was lying directly behind her.

And the biggest problem was what she felt below as she moved.

“Ah!”

He was still inside her.

The moment she realized it, her face burned hot.

The only comfort was that the room was dark enough to hide how badly she was flustered.

But the sensation lingering inside her left her at a complete loss.

“Ha. Tight.”

His leisurely voice was tinged with excitement.

As he gradually hardened again, he filled the narrow space inside her even more completely.

She was still damp from the fluids she’d shed the night before.

It was, in every sense, an ideal situation for him.

“Wh-why are you still here?”

The last time Go Yi-jae had woken up on the cold table in that office, Chae Ju-han had been gone.

She didn’t want to experience that lonely, miserable feeling again.

But neither had she wanted to wake up to him this close.

Because Chae Ju-han had wrapped himself around her, her body felt impossibly heavy.

It was as though she had been bound within his embrace.

Lying on her side, one leg raised, she could feel his firm thigh pressed beneath her.

He was still buried deep inside her.

His lips pressed against the back of her neck.

His large hand kneaded her waist.

As though he intended to touch all the places he hadn’t had enough time to touch the night before.

“You’re the one who fell asleep.”

“…What?”

“We’re still in the middle of this.”

“…”

“Why are you surprised? I warned you. This wasn’t going to end easily.”

His slow voice was calm, as though stating an obvious fact.

The hand caressing her waist moved upward and squeezed her b*east.

Though the room was pitch black and he couldn’t possibly see, he found the sensitive spot with perfect accuracy.

“Ah.”

“Maybe because you just woke up, you’re getting warmer.”

She gasped as he moved.

Fresh wetness gathered again.

“Stop… no, it’s morning. Our seventy-two hours…”

Go Yi-jae scrambled for words, trying to restore some kind of logic to the situation.

But the man remained shameless.

“Then how can we count seventy-two hours if we’re not done yet?”

“That’s ridiculous.”

“If you’re going to make me wait cruelly, then deal with the consequences.”

She shut her eyes tightly.

Was Chae Ju-han really insane when it came to this?

He seemed completely unreasonable.

“I’m small. Can’t you tell?”

“True. Why are you so small? Though your chest isn’t.”

His large hand closed around her again.

“Don’t you feel even a little sorry?”

“What can I do? Desire wins.”

She wanted to curse him.

“Did you just swear at me? I think I heard something.”

He laughed softly.

The room was still dark, lit only by the faint light slipping through the crack beneath the door.

It still felt as though she hadn’t fully awakened from her dream.

The man who had once taken her hand and led her somewhere safe in that dream now held her just as tightly.

He had been the first dependable adult she’d ever known.

He had been the first person to show her such fierce attention.

“Kid, let’s go home.”

“Go Yi-jae. Focus.”

The voice overlapped with the past.

Even after losing his memories, Chae Ju-han was still Chae Ju-han.

He called her with the same voice.

He had forgotten her.

And yet he had rolled back into her life once again, holding her tightly.

The hands that had dug through ashes to find her, the hands that had led her to safety, the hands she had never wanted to lose…

Those same hands held her now.

The strange feeling made her body grow hot all over.

After dreaming of following him six years ago, it almost felt as though the ending of that story had led directly to this moment.

As though the painful five years she had endured had been nothing but a bad dream.

As though Chae Ju-han’s embrace was real.

“Please… I can’t anymore.”

“That’s not what your body says.”

“Later. Next time. Please?”

“Go Yi-jae.”

The way he said her name made her shiver.

He knew exactly what effect it had.

That was why he kept saying it.

She tried to shove him away with her elbow, annoyed by his teasing, but his large body didn’t move at all.

Instead, he only laughed softly.

“Too much?”

“It’s too much.”

“And yet you like it.”

He was right.

Every time he brushed against her, her body betrayed her.

The cramped room echoed with their movements.

A stack of supplies toppled over with a loud crash.

“Planning to destroy the whole place?”

He shifted, pinning her more securely.

The room was so small there was nowhere to run.

“Too deep!”

“Endure it. You’ll hurt yourself if you try to escape in a room this small.”

He was saying that while being the very reason she was in trouble.

Of course, despite his concern, there was no mercy in him at all.

“Ah!”
