Chapter 38: War

“Finally, they’re here!”

A flashy red sports car came speeding in, executing a handsome fishtail drift.

Amidst the screeching sound of intense friction, it braked to a stop.

Two men and a woman emerged from inside.

Leading them was a cute-looking girl with pink hair, wearing a black dress trimmed with white lace and a bow tie.

Behind her was a cool-looking boy with gray hair, his hands tucked in his pockets.

Bringing up the rear was a muscular, burly man.

“School Major Shi, Major Liu, Captain Fang, please come with me. We’ll discuss the specific situation as we walk!”

“Mhm!”

The group of four rushed towards Villa 32, which was tightly surrounded by several thousand soldiers.

After the team leader had explained the general situation, he made a solemn request: “The most difficult part will have to be left to you! But please, you must hold them off.”

Shi Yidie smiled slightly and said, “No problem, trust us~”

Fang Han rubbed the back of his neck, looking expressionlessly at the top floor of the villa, which avoided the bright lights and looked incredibly lonely under the moonlight.

He replied with certainty, “No problem.”

Liu Zhuang waved his special iron gauntlets and said with a smile, “No problem at all!”

Moonlight spilled down on that lonely rooftop.

All around was a sea of bright lights, filled with fearless soldiers whose gazes were full of determination.

Inside the building, as the prayers ended, Wang Xiang opened his eyes and straightened his clothes.

“My three lords, I will go and prepare!”

“Mhm~”

Turning back, his peripheral vision caught a glimpse of the road packed with black-clothed soldiers, and the vast, brightly lit perimeter of the villa district far away.
He tightly gripped his cane and slowly walked down the stairs.

Reaching the first floor, he looked at his subordinates who were ready to go out and fight, and nodded.

“Yes, my lord!”

The middle-aged man in the lead quickly agreed.

He turned to his subordinates and gave the order: “The Black God is about to descend! As long as we hold off the attack from the outside, we will have the chance to bathe in the divine light, obtain eternal life~ and become holy divine messengers!”

The crowd shouted fanatically, “Eternal life~ Divine messenger~”

“Eternal life~ Divine messenger!”

They poured out like a stream, countless cultists raising their weapons, swarming around the villa, trying to delay the Investigation Bureau’s attack as much as possible.

“Act according to the plan!”

“Act according to the plan!”

At the same time, the commander, who was staring intently at the surveillance screen, issued the command.

The same sentence echoed in the earphones of countless squad captains.

The great battle had arrived.

The distant sky was illuminated by searchlights.

Below, people from both sides crawled rapidly like ants.

The moonlight was hidden by dark clouds, and roars became the main theme of the night.

Zhang Heng held his blue-glowing blade and charged forward with all his might.
He was one of the few retired soldiers who had joined the battle.

Although his strength was not even a tenth of what it used to be, he was still a mid-tier combatant among the Initial Form warriors.

This azure, elegant long saber was so eye-catching among all the black blades.

Suddenly, three figures shot towards the rooftop.

Zhang Heng looked at the three figures and revealed a hint of bitterness.

Back then, he could have become an existence like that.

But Zhang Heng did not regret it.
He was not an indecisive person.

“Charge!”

There were no roars like those on a battlefield charge, as if to complement the silence of the night.

Only the sound of heavy footsteps and panting could be heard.

Clang~

Someone had engaged in close combat.

Crack… Pop…

Nearly a hundred people, in different locations but at the same time, clashed.

Looking down from the sky, it was clear that the combat power of the attacking side was stronger than that of the defending side.

The warriors of the Investigation Bureau trained hard daily and were well-equipped, while the cultists’ minions indulged themselves day and night, their bodies long since hollowed out by wine and women.

They could only rely on the power brought by their energons to withstand the pressure.

“Shattering Kill Style~”

Zhang Heng muttered faintly.

A blue-white aura quietly enveloped his arm, making it look like it was emitting an azure fluorescence.

On the back of his hand, a coin-sized bright dot could be clearly seen, and near this dot were smaller dots.

They radiated to the surrounding cells, providing a large amount of energons to power the entire arm.

A middle-aged man with a sallow complexion watched Zhang Heng charge towards him and couldn’t help but tremble.
He braced himself and raised his blade to meet the attack.

Whoosh~

The azure long saber let out a whistling sound in the air.

Pushing off with his calf, Zhang Heng chopped down at the sallow-faced man with the momentum of an aerial pounce.

The blade split down from above.

The blade’s body, which emitted a fluorescent wave, came into contact with the faint moonlight, parting it like a water wave.

A faint blue light remained as the blade pressed down heavily.

Under the man’s panicked gaze, the blade sliced into him from his left shoulder all the way down to his right waist before emerging.

Schlick~

The sallow-faced middle-aged man was split in two by the blade.

His upper body slid off diagonally.
The man watched in disbelief, only feeling a coldness at the incision.

Then, everything before his eyes became blurrier, darker, and the sounds grew more distant.

Fear welled up in his heart, and he finally used his last bit of strength to shout.

“Ah!!”

Even the evil-doing cultist minions felt a wave of nausea upon seeing the yellow-faced middle-aged man with his intestines spilling all over the ground.

Several cultists close to Zhang Heng quickly moved away.

For a moment, the area within five meters of Zhang Heng was empty.

The blue, elegant blade licked the blood.

Zhang Heng flicked his long saber, and blood splattered onto another cultist’s face.
The cultist looked at Zhang Heng’s azure blade, clearly knowing something.

He said in a panic, “Why… why would a Second Form person appear here?”

The voice wasn’t soft.

Zhang Heng heard it, but he just smiled a little bitterly.

He wasn’t a Second Form warrior, just a failure.

The middle-aged man who had always been by the old man’s side looked at Zhang Heng, clearly recognizing him, and said, “Everyone, don’t be afraid. He is not a Second Form awakened warrior. His name is Zhang Heng, a retired soldier.”

After speaking, he held his heavy sword and slowly walked towards Zhang Heng, seemingly wanting to kill him to stabilize his side’s morale and stall for more time.

“Heh, even if I’m retired, I’m still stronger than you bunch of parasites!”

“The meaning of the Divine Cult’s existence is something you ordinary people would never understand!”

The two of them, each holding their weapons, clashed.

At the same time, a group of well-equipped people rushed out from the villa.

They were the Shadow Assassin group that the old man had mentioned.

The members inside were all near-fanatical worshippers of the Divine Cult and possessed extraordinary combat power.

The fanatical cultists were clearly more than a little stronger than this ragtag group of stragglers.

All at once, the pace of the advance actually slowed down.

Among the Investigation Bureau warriors, people began to get injured.

The moonlight slowly emerged from the dark clouds again, shining on the three figures flying in the air.

In the blink of an eye, the three had already reached the top-floor attic, their weapons already in hand.

A fierce battle was about to begin.
