Chapter 39: Interrogation and Unexpected Temptation

Lin Mo sat waiting under the candlelight while holding the little panda, almost drifting off to sleep.

The wooden door was suddenly pushed open. She Yuan strode over carrying a black mousetrap cage, followed by the chatterbox of a large turtle, who exclaimed excitedly, “We caught it!”

The little old man chimed in beside him to claim credit: “If I hadn’t reacted quickly, it would have escaped again! How about it—am I amazing or what?”

She Yuan added from behind him, “I told the big turtle there was some noise and woke him up. He picked up a hoe and swung it around wildly, just happening to hit the fleeing flying squirrel. Terrified, the flying squirrel scrambled right back into the cage.”

Lin Mo burst into laughter. She could easily picture the scene: a reckless big turtle running head-on into a panic-stricken flying squirrel as the two beasts crossed paths.

Lin Mo gave the little old man and She Yuan a thumbs-up, smiling warmly: “You were both amazing. How about I treat you both to lunch tomorrow?”

She Yuan’s face flushed slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed. “Then I’ll head back first. She Qiu is still waiting for me at home.”

The little old man also waved his hand and said, “I’m heading back too, to take my little grandson out for a stroll. After crouching there for so long, my limbs are sore and need some movement. Little Bamboo Shoot, I like eating grass; just remember to prepare plenty of delicious, tender vegetable dishes tomorrow!”

Lin Mo nodded in agreement. The two put down the black mousetrap cage, turned around, and walked out.

The black cage was placed on the wooden table, containing a trembling flying squirrel inside.

Its back was covered in grayish-brown fur, its abdomen was grayish-white, and its four paws were orange-red. Its belly was stuffed so full that it looked as if a ball were lodged inside, with green juice still smeared beneath its mouth. It had a broad forehead, looked remarkably cute, and its two large eyes reflected a sense of utter helplessness.

Its tiny appearance couldn’t look more innocent.

Heh. If she didn’t know this flying squirrel had devoured four haystacks and ruined so many of her saplings, she truly would have been fooled by its appearance.

Lin Mo picked up a pen and conducted a cold interrogation: “Name?”

The flying squirrel let out strange, chattering squeaks and began thrashing around inside the cage.

Lin Mo tapped the cage with her pen, putting on a fierce expression: “Leniency for confession, severity for resistance!”

The little panda in Lin Mo’s arms gently hooked a bear paw. The flying squirrel’s body was suddenly bound by spiritual energy, collapsing onto the floor of the cage with a soft plop.

The flying squirrel looked completely dazed: “Squeak~”

Lin Mo nodded, recording it down—criminal beast named Squeaky. Immediately after, she pressed further: “Why did you steal and eat so much? Did you act alone or as part of a gang? Was this premeditated?”

The flying squirrel let out a burp, answering blankly: “Squeak~”

After a moment’s thought, Lin Mo conscientiously wrote on her small notebook:

—Reason for theft: Hunger. Suspected solo operation; motive for crime unknown.

Watching the words Lin Mo was writing, the little panda in her arms suddenly twitched her chubby body. Lin Mo gathered the restless little fur ball with one arm, whispering softly, “Don’t wriggle; the interrogation will be over in a moment.”

The little panda wriggled free from Lin Mo, transforming into a tiny loli. Her face carried a hint of baby fat, her features exquisite, her lips red and teeth white, with a faint, unspillable frost lurking between her brows—clearly a miniature version of Mo Jin.

Lin Mo’s pen froze as she said in pleasant surprise, “Has your body recovered?”

Mo Jin nodded and sat in the chair opposite Lin Mo. Because her legs weren’t long enough, both hung suspended in the air, making one instinctively want to pick her up and spin her around.

Mo Jin said in all seriousness, “I can currently mobilize a portion of my spiritual energy to briefly restore my human form. It’s just not very stable yet, so I might still turn back into a little panda at any time.”

Lin Mo nodded: “Don’t worry, I’m here for everything.”

Mo Jin gave a soft “mm,” opened the black mouse cage, lifted the flying squirrel inside by its tail, and pulled it out.

In Mo Jin’s hand, the flying squirrel acted as if it had met a cat, its body trembling, not daring to move an inch.

Lin Mo followed behind Mo Jin out of the wooden cabin, puzzled as to why Mo Jin had suddenly grabbed the flying squirrel.

Walking into the courtyard, Mo Jin gave the flying squirrel’s tail a flick. Held upside down, the flying squirrel’s mouth was forced wide open, and the food stored in its stomach began pouring out uncontrollably. A single stalk of wheatgrass slowly slid out from its mouth, followed by a loud whoosh—as if a switch had been flipped—and the flying squirrel’s mouth began madly spewing out grass.

A small mountain of wheatgrass poured from the flying squirrel’s mouth, followed quickly by two more piles of timothy grass and alfalfa.

Lin Mo was stunned. This flying squirrel was far too good at hoarding food! Storing so much stuff in its stomach without being able to digest it—wasn’t it afraid of bursting to death?

Just when Lin Mo thought the food inside the flying squirrel’s stomach had been emptied, Mo Jin tightened her grip on its tail and gave it a few more shakes, dislodging a mountain-high pile of tender tree leaves.

The flying squirrel’s stomach visibly deflated, and the entire rodent was shaken until it saw stars, collapsing dizzyingly onto the ground.

Lin Mo squatted down, poking the squirrel’s belly.

After washing her hands, Mo Jin walked over. “Autumn is coming soon, and summer is almost over. Autumn is very short, so this flying squirrel was probably storing food for the winter; that’s why it ate so much grass. Don’t worry, the grass should still be usable. Don’t go trying to make an internal spatial pouch out of the squirrel’s belly—this is an innate skill unique to flying squirrels. Even if you kill it, it won’t work.”

Lin Mo hadn’t expected her little scheme to be seen through by Mo Jin. Standing up from the ground, she asked, “Then what’s the point of keeping this squirrel?”

She couldn’t just release it and wait for it to come back and steal grain again.

“There’s something on a flying squirrel that can be used as a medicinal ingredient—traditional medicine calls it Wulingzhi (flying squirrel feces). The outside world has always purchased it; you can check the official website, there should be a collection point.”

Lin Mo took down her optical computer device and scanned through the collection points. Opening the list, Wulingzhi was right near the top—a single catty was worth 100 Shells! It was a famous medicinal substance, also known as cold-creature droppings, which was actually…

Lin Mo: …

People actually want this stuff?

She didn’t particularly want to harvest it right now. With a conflicted expression, Lin Mo ultimately decided to put the flying squirrel back into the cage for now and figure it out tomorrow morning.

After washing her hands, Lin Mo bent down and spoke to the tiny loli Mo Jin: “We’ll handle this squirrel tomorrow. Let me carry you back into the cabin; it’s windy outside, don’t catch a cold.”

Mo Jin extended her arms, letting Lin Mo scoop her into her embrace.

Holding a full arms’ worth of sweetness, Lin Mo pushed open the door, placed Mo Jin on the bed, and took off her shoes.

Mo Jin raised her leg, accidentally brushing against Lin Mo’s arm.

Lin Mo looked up, thinking Mo Jin was being playful, her eyes filled with smiles: “What is it?”

Standing on the bed, Mo Jin wrapped both arms around Lin Mo’s neck, her tiny face deadpan and her eyes full of seriousness: “Come here so I can apply the medicine for you.”

A deadpan little loli is truly adorable.

Lin Mo couldn’t help herself, reaching out to gently pinch Mo Jin’s tender, rosy cheek. It felt soft and smooth, just like touching a piece of tofu. “So cute.”

Mo Jin’s pupils dilated slightly, seemingly not expecting Lin Mo to touch her suddenly.

Releasing her grip, Lin Mo realized she had accidentally left a red mark on Mo Jin’s face. Panicking, she gently rubbed it twice. “Did I pinch you too hard?”

Mo Jin shook her head, feeling a bit angry—Lin Mo was only taking advantage of being taller than her now to play with her face!

Reaching out her hands, she pinched Lin Mo’s cheeks in return.

Mo Jin didn’t use much force, so it didn’t hurt at all. Yet being pinched like this made Lin Mo’s entire face burn intensely. Her heart rate accelerated, and she froze in place.

Oh goodness, Mo Jin is still a little loli right now! I can’t possibly have THOSE kinds of thoughts toward a little loli, right?

Unaware of what Lin Mo was thinking, Mo Jin found the feel of Lin Mo’s cheeks rather nice, so she pinched with both hands.

Lin Mo raised her hands, holding Mo Jin’s wrists. Her expression turned slightly solemn: “Stop fooling around, or else…”

Before Lin Mo could finish her sentence, Mo Jin’s forehead pressed against hers. The breath of the two intertwined, intensely close and intimate.

Lin Mo’s gaze fixed on Mo Jin’s pink, cherry-like lips, which looked just like freshly bloomed, gorgeous petals. Her tongue lightly pressed against the roof of her mouth; for a moment, she lost her mind, the thoughts in her head tangling into knots.

Reason ultimately won out. Mo Jin was still a little loli right now; wouldn’t she be taking advantage of her weakness?

Panicking, Lin Mo took a step back and turned around, her flustered gaze landing on the open wooden door. She hurriedly said, “I’ll go close the door.”

A lovely, faint blush dusted Mo Jin’s face. Her eyes were watery, her red lips slightly parted, and her gaze held a moment of distraction—she had almost kissed Lin Mo’s mouth just now.

Lowering her head, she rubbed her fingers together. She remembered from the last time she touched them that Lin Mo’s lips were much softer than her cheeks, and very elastic too. Kissing them would probably feel quite different from her forehead, wouldn’t it? What a pity she hadn’t gotten to kiss them.

Stepping to the doorway, Lin Mo felt the cold wind blowing in, dispersing the ambiguous thoughts in her mind. The thin layer of sweat on her back dried up, leaving her feeling a bit chilled, and she couldn’t help but shiver.

She closed the door, walked to the table, and went to pour a cup of water, only to remember that she had cleared away the broken porcelain pieces caused by the large turtle earlier and hadn’t had time to replace the tea set yet. With her heart burning hot right now, she could only lick her dry lips.

It’s all that big turtle’s fault! If it hadn’t smashed the teacups, I wouldn’t be left without even a drop of water to drink when having these thoughts about the little loli Mo Jin!

Lin Mo sighed in her heart. Looking up to see Mo Jin acting as composed as usual holding the medicine bottle, Lin Mo felt flustered instead. Not daring to look directly at Mo Jin, she asked carefully, “How about we don’t apply medicine today? I feel much better, and when I looked in the mirror earlier, the red marks on my neck were almost invisible.”

Mo Jin pulled a small, stern face, saying coldly, “No. Come here so I can apply the medicine for you.”

That cold, little bao-like face didn’t look quite as cute as a moment ago.

Lin Mo had no choice but to obey submissively. Taking off her shoes, she lay face down on the bed and slipped off her upper garment, revealing her smooth, jade-like back.

Mo Jin squeezed out the medicine, applying it onto the red marks that were already on the verge of disappearing. Her fair, tender hands gently rubbed the ointment evenly with soft, slow movements. Even so, by the time the application was complete, a thin layer of sweat had broken out on Lin Mo’s back once more.

Helping Lin Mo pull up her clothes, Mo Jin asked softly, “Does it hurt a lot?”

Lin Mo shook her head frantically: “Not at all.”

“Alright, let’s sleep.”

She sat up, blew out the candle by the bed, held Mo Jin in her arms, and snuggled into the blanket, quickly falling into a deep sleep.

In the dead of night, Mo Jin secretly pressed a gentle kiss onto Lin Mo’s lips.
