Chapter 41: The Price of an Insult

Li Xiao was standing beside Gu Ran and the others, his black coat open, revealing a dark gray turtleneck sweater underneath.

His face was expressionless, but when his gaze swept over them, Chen Rui and the others felt their scalps tingle.

Gu Ran quickly tried to smooth things over:

“It’s nothing, just joking. Why are you so late?”

Li Xiao ignored him, his eyes first lingering on Jiang Yu for a moment.

Jiang Yu was focused on his work, head down.

Then, Li Xiao turned to Chen Rui:

“Who did you just call a plaything?”

Chen Rui felt his confidence waver under that gaze, but he couldn’t show weakness in front of so many people. He steeled himself and said:

“Just a joke. Your little bartender has quite the temper.”

“Little bartender?”

Li Xiao repeated the term, a sarcastic twitch at the corner of his mouth.

“Chen Rui, are you saying my taste is poor, that the person I fancy is low-class?”

Chen Rui was speechless.

Zhou Zijun quickly tried to laugh it off:

“Li Xiao, it’s just a joke. We were curious to see what kind of celestial being you patronize every day.”

Li Xiao stared at Chen Rui:

“Now you’ve seen? And then?”

“And then?” Chen Rui was stumped.

Li Xiao’s gaze turned cold:

“Now that you’ve seen, go back to your booth and drink. Don’t be an eyesore here.”

Chen Rui’s face completely lost composure:

“Li Xiao, is it worth it? For a waiter—”

Before he could finish, Li Xiao suddenly moved.

No one saw how he did it. There was a dull thud, and Chen Rui was pinned to the bar counter, his cheek pressed against the cold surface.

Li Xiao pressed one hand on the back of his neck, while the other clenched into a fist against his temple, veins bulging on his hand.

“Say that again?”

Li Xiao’s voice was low, but every word was like ice:

“Who. Is. A. Waiter?”

The bar music continued, but this area was dead silent.

All the patrons were watching, even the DJ lowered the volume.

Gu Ran rushed over to pull Li Xiao away:

“Li Xiao! Let go! We’re all friends!”

Jiang Yu heard the commotion, looked up, and saw Li Xiao pinning Chen Rui to the bar.

He quickly set down his work, took off his gloves, and prepared to come out from behind the bar to stop Li Xiao.

“Friends?”

Li Xiao sneered, his grip not loosening:

“Would friends insult someone I care about right in front of me?”

Chen Rui struggled, his face flushed red:

“Li Xiao, are you f*cking crazy? For a man—”

Li Xiao suddenly yanked him up by the collar and punched him in the face!

“Ahh!”

Chen Rui cried out in pain, blood instantly gushing from his nose.

Zhou Zijun and the others wanted to step forward, but Li Xiao’s glare pinned them in place.

“Listen up.”

Li Xiao pushed Chen Rui away, who staggered and hit the edge of the bar.

Li Xiao looked around at them:

“Jiang Yu is not my plaything. He is someone I am currently pursuing.”

“From now on, if anyone dares to speak to him like that, or make him suffer even a bit…”

He stared at Chen Rui:

“Don’t blame me for not remembering our friendship.”

The moment Li Xiao finished speaking, Jiang Yu had already quickly come out from behind the bar.

He grabbed Li Xiao’s wrist with his right hand and pulled him toward the door.

Jiang Yu didn’t want to escalate the situation, didn’t want Li Xiao to completely sever ties with these so-called friends for his sake.

But just as they turned, Chen Rui, whose nose was still bleeding from the punch, his eyes bloodshot, suddenly grabbed an empty whiskey bottle from behind the bar and swung it at the back of Li Xiao’s head!

“Li Xiao, watch out!”

Gu Ran’s shout rang out.

Li Xiao heard the sound and tried to turn, but Jiang Yu was faster.

Jiang Yu released his grip on Li Xiao’s wrist and raised his arm to shield the back of Li Xiao’s head.

“Bam—!!”

The bottle smashed squarely onto Jiang Yu’s right forearm.

The thick glass bottle shattered instantly, liquid and fragments splattering everywhere.

Jiang Yu grunted, his face instantly paling, and he stumbled half a step sideways from the force.

Li Xiao spun around, and the sight made his heart stop.

Jiang Yu clutched his arm, a dark stain quickly spreading on his sleeve, mingled with glass shards and blood.

“Jiang Yu!”

Li Xiao caught him, his voice breaking.

Chen Rui still held the broken bottle, standing there stunned, as if he hadn’t expected to actually hit someone.

Li Xiao looked up at him, his eyes boiling with fury and coldness that dropped the bar’s temperature to freezing.

“Chen Rui, you just wait.”

Li Xiao’s voice was cold as poisoned ice.

He ignored everyone else, grabbed Jiang Yu’s uninjured arm, and headed for the door.

The searing pain in his arm made Jiang Yu gasp, cold sweat instantly beading on his forehead.

Li Xiao dragged him out of the bar.

Snow was still falling, already piled thick on the ground.

Li Xiao immediately took off his coat and draped it over Jiang Yu, who was only wearing a thin shirt.

He guided Jiang Yu to his sports car and opened the passenger door:

“Get in quickly, we’re going to the hospital.”

Jiang Yu obeyed and got in. Li Xiao closed the door, ran to the driver’s seat, and started the engine.

The sports car’s engine growled angrily in the snowy night, tires slipping for a moment before shooting forward like an arrow.

The heater was on full blast, but Jiang Yu’s face remained paper-white.

He leaned back in the seat, his right arm hanging at his side, the sleeve soaked with blood.

“Does it hurt badly?”

Li Xiao held the wheel with one hand and reached out with the other, wanting to touch but afraid, finally just grasping Jiang Yu’s uninjured left hand tightly.

Jiang Yu’s hand was ice-cold and trembling slightly.

“Not too bad.”

Jiang Yu’s voice was soft as he turned his head to watch the rapidly receding street scene outside.

‘Actually, it hurts like hell.’

When the bottle came down, he heard the crack of his own bone. Now his whole forearm felt like it was on fire, stabbing pain drilling into his brain.

Li Xiao tightened his grip on Jiang Yu’s hand and pressed the accelerator harder.

The late-night roads were empty, and in less than fifteen minutes, the car pulled into the emergency parking lot of the city center hospital.

Li Xiao got out, ignored Jiang Yu’s protests, and carried him into the ER.

The attending doctor and nurse saw the alarming blood on the arm of the man in his arms and immediately surrounded them.

“What happened?”

“Hit by a bottle. Glass shards might be embedded.”

Li Xiao spoke quickly, his voice barely containing his anxiety.

A nurse brought a wheelchair. Li Xiao carefully placed Jiang Yu in it, keeping a protective hand on his injured right arm.

The door to the debridement room closed, leaving Li Xiao outside.

He leaned against the wall, staring at Jiang Yu’s blood on his hands, fingers trembling uncontrollably.

The blood was a dark red under the light, already starting to clot, sticking to his skin like a vicious brand.

Li Xiao closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

When he opened them again, only cold violence remained in his gaze.

He pulled out his phone and dialed.

The call connected, and a respectful voice answered:

“Young Master Li?”

“Chen Rui. The second son of the Chen family.”

Li Xiao’s voice was calm, but every word carried chill:

“Go teach him a lesson. Make him remember.”

“To what extent?”

“Since his right hand is so troublesome, cripple it.”

“Understood.”

He hung up, put away the phone, and looked back at the closed door.

After about ten minutes, the door opened.
