Join the ServerJiang Mian was like a little tail, following Lu Jianglian all the way into the office. He had barely spent any time standing behind Lu Jianglian protecting him before he started getting bored.
He figured this place was probably pretty safe. Taking a little break shouldn’t be a problem, right?
Jiang Mian also knew better than to disturb Lu Jianglian while he was working. He carefully shuffled his feet toward the sofa a short distance away, and before long, he had curled up on it and fallen asleep again.
“…”
Looks like he had gotten up too early this morning and was making up for lost sleep again.
He stood up, walked into the lounge, and brought out a thin blanket to cover Jiang Mian with before returning to work.
The office was very quiet, with only the occasional rustle of turning pages and the soft scratching of a pen against paper.
At first glance, everything seemed no different from before. And yet, somehow, something had changed.
Assistant Wang knocked on the door and came in to deliver some documents. Lu Jianglian instinctively said, “Keep your voice down.”
Assistant Wang lowered his voice and finished reporting everything that needed to be reported. Then, just as he turned around, he caught sight of Jiang Mian sleeping on the sofa.
His eyes widened for a moment, and he hurried out of the office.
‘Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap!!! Oh my God!!!’
What they said in the group chat was actually true!
The chairman really did bring a pretty young man to the company!!
The chairman had been a human glacier for years, so cold he could freeze someone to death, and now that he’d finally fallen for someone, he was going all out. He had even brought the guy straight into his office!
Assistant Wang didn’t even know how to describe the way the chairman had just spoken so gently. When had he ever seen this side of the chairman?
He couldn’t help having a rather suggestive thought.
The young man had come here and immediately gone to sleep… Heh heh heh… The chairman really hadn’t lost his touch…
He slapped his own face.
Bah, bah, bah! The chairman was only twenty-nine this year. He couldn’t use that phrase to describe him.
Assistant Wang brought a cup of coffee inside and pretended that he had only just noticed Jiang Mian. In a quiet voice, he said, “Chairman, I heard that sleeping bent over for too long can put a strain on the heart and lungs. Madam like this…”
The look in Lu Jianglian’s eyes behind his glasses darkened slightly. He raised his head and looked at Assistant Wang, cutting him off.
“Stop imagining things. I’ve never seen you this enthusiastic about actual work.”
Assistant Wang felt a chill run down his spine under that stare. He gave an awkward cough.
“My mouth got ahead of my brain just now.”
Could it be that he had been the one thinking too much?
Lu Jianglian said, “Go out. Don’t bother me unless there’s something important.”
How idle could this man be all day?
Assistant Wang had just turned around to leave when he heard their chairman casually add,
“He’s just a little bodyguard who volunteered to protect me.”
“?”
He hadn’t even asked about the young man’s identity just now, had he?
Why did the chairman’s voice sound a little… smug?
Assistant Wang refused to believe it and secretly glanced at their chairman.
Still the same unapproachable, foul-looking expression.
He thought perhaps he had simply heard wrong.
The door closed.
Lu Jianglian remembered what Assistant Wang had said. Sitting in his chair, he looked at Jiang Mian from a distance for several minutes before lowering his head and continuing to read the documents.
Not long after, he rubbed his brow and stood up again. With careful movements, he turned Jiang Mian over.
Jiang Mian slept until noon before Lu Jianglian finally woke him up for lunch.
When Jiang Mian opened his eyes, he was still dazed for a moment.
‘Who am I? Where am I? And who is he?’
He rolled over and buried his face in the blanket.
“I’m sleepy. Don’t bother me while I’m sleeping.”
“…”
How could one person sleep this much? Had he stayed up late last night?
He stopped trying to wake Jiang Mian and instead sat down at the small table, opening the lunch boxes that the auntie had delivered.
The moment Jiang Mian caught the delicious aroma, his nose twitched lightly, and he instantly woke up.
Oh, right! He wasn’t in his cave anymore. He had a mission to complete!
Jiang Mian immediately sat up and looked at Lu Jianglian somewhat guiltily. His eyes blinked rapidly as he stammered,
“I didn’t mean to fall asleep. It’s just that your place is too safe… Look, you haven’t gotten hurt, have you?”
“I know.”
Hearing Jiang Mian say it with such solemn sincerity, the corners of Lu Jianglian’s lips lifted into an almost imperceptible smile. He pointed toward the bathroom.
“Go wash your hands before you come eat.”
He neither made trouble nor caused a fuss. Aside from his rather unpredictable way of thinking, he was quite obedient overall.
Lu Jianglian didn’t mind keeping him by his side for the time being.
“Okay!”
With his messy hair sticking up everywhere, Jiang Mian scampered off to the bathroom to wash and dry his hands, then scampered right back.
He sat down beside Lu Jianglian. Looking at all the dishes spread out in front of them, he thought for a moment before finding a cup and pouring Lu Jianglian a glass of water.
“You opened so many lunch boxes. That must’ve been hard,” Jiang Mian awkwardly tried to curry favor. “Drink some water.”
Lu Jianglian stared at the cup that had previously held coffee and clearly hadn’t been washed before being filled with water. He fell silent for a moment, then took it and placed it on the table.
“You worked hard too.”
If Jiang Mian’s expression hadn’t been so completely natural, Lu Jianglian would have thought he was deliberately messing with him.
Jiang Mian pursed his lips, the corners of his mouth lifting.
“This is what I’m supposed to do!”
In the end, Lu Jianglian only took one sip of the water before leaving it untouched.
And even that one sip had only been because Jiang Mian had stared at him with such eager, expectant eyes.
During the afternoon, while Lu Jianglian was working, he noticed Jiang Mian sitting on the sofa, staring straight at him. Unable to take it anymore, he said,
“You don’t have to keep looking at me. You can play on your phone for a while.”
Didn’t young people these days all like to sit around playing on their phones?
Jiang Mian tilted his head and asked in confusion,
“What is a phone?”
Lu Jianglian’s expression became extremely strange at those words, but he didn’t ask any questions. After all, everyone had their own secrets.
He took out his own phone, unlocked it, and called Jiang Mian over.
“Do you know how to use it?” he asked.
Jiang Mian curiously glanced at it a few times. Holding onto the back of the chair, he imitated Lu Jianglian and tapped the screen a few times.
Watching the screen constantly change, his eyes lit up. He puffed out his chest and confidently declared,
“I know how to use it!”
He was standing too close.
Lu Jianglian’s Adam’s apple bobbed once. He simply handed the phone to Jiang Mian and gestured for him to go sit properly on the sofa.
“Go play.”
Jiang Mian didn’t leave immediately. Clutching the phone, he looked at Lu Jianglian with bright, sparkling eyes before leaning over and deliberately pressing his cheek against Lu Jianglian’s.
“You’re a really good person.”
Having been promoted from a good person to a really good person, Lu Jianglian felt the lingering softness against his cheek and froze for a moment. His ears grew increasingly red.
He gave a quiet hum. Staring at the document in front of him, he couldn’t make sense of a single word.
Meanwhile, the culprit who had distracted him was happily playing with the phone.
On the way home that evening, Lu Jianglian took Jiang Mian to buy a phone.
Jiang Mian was dazzled by all the choices and couldn’t decide which one was better, so Lu Jianglian simply bought him the same model he used himself.
On the way back, Lu Jianglian had intended to add Jiang Mian’s contact information.
However, the moment he took out his phone, he discovered that his usually quiet WeChat had quite a few messages.
Lu Fu: [Brother, big brother, did your account get hacked? Why are you sending cute emojis at me?!]
Lu Fu: [Hey! Give me back my serious big brother!]
Lu Zhixia: [Is this really you?]
Jian Ran: [When did Chairman Lu become so childish? I’m saving these stickers.]
Nan Xiangchuan: [Chairman Lu seems to be in such a good mood. Want to go to the auction together in a week?]
****
“…”
He didn’t reply to a single one of them. After adding Jiang Mian’s contact information, he put his phone back into his pocket.
Seeing Jiang Mian start playing with his new phone again, Lu Jianglian said,
“You’ve been looking at your phone for a long time today. Put it away and rest for a while. Otherwise, you’ll damage your eyes.”
Jiang Mian reluctantly put down the phone and obediently replied,
“Okay.”
