Chapter 8: The Returning Miss

The room had excellent ventilation. The sturdy, imposing floor-to-ceiling windows came with blackout curtains that fit so tightly, not a sliver of sunlight could slip through.

She could switch to whatever environment she wanted at any time.

She could let the sunlight pour into the room, or make the day feel as dark as night.

On top of that, the soundproofing was excellent.

Staying in her room, Cheng Yiyi couldn’t hear a single other sound.

Of course, that might also be because she was in the Shen villa. No servant would dare make noise at night.

The bedroom came with an en-suite bathroom.

There was a bathtub with a built-in heat retention function. She could soak for as long as she liked without the water ever going cold.

Shower gel, conditioner, and everything else went without saying. All fully prepared.

Cheng Yiyi was very satisfied with this room!

She turned on the air conditioner and lay on the bed to sort through the information she had gathered today.

‘As I thought… that girl really is my nemesis…’

Though she had never met Shen Anyue, Cheng Yiyi had already guessed about seventy or eighty percent of her personality.

The whole family doted on her.

She even played the victim and voluntarily gave up her position as the miss.

How could a normal person act like that?!

Simply not trying to take over the nest and not trying to drive Cheng Yiyi out would already be merciful enough.

Put yourself in her shoes.

If you were living a carefree life where everything was handed to you, and suddenly someone appeared to take away all your wealth and power, would you resist?

Of course you would!

If someone wouldn’t resist, just how kind would they have to be?

There was absolutely no such person in this world!

Cheng Yiyi didn’t care about those material things, but in her eyes, her adoptive parents were truly wonderful people, and she loved them deeply.

That was exactly why she didn’t want to see their biological daughter turn out to be a low person who chased fame and fortune, played petty tricks, and feigned selflessness.

Because if that happened, her parents would find out, and they would be sad and heartbroken.

Cheng Yiyi didn’t want to see them grieve.

So!

She absolutely had to correct that girl, even if she had to use violent means!

Based on the information so far, this girl was clearly the vicious villain that the whole family doted on in novels!

‘The Shen family may spoil you? I sure won’t!’

The sky had darkened by now, and Cheng Yiyi felt a bit hungry.

She had planned to order takeout, but then remembered the Shen family had a kitchen, so she decided to cook for herself.

She followed the map and reached her destination quickly.

Every servant she passed on the way bowed or greeted her.

It was clear the Shen family had given the staff a heads-up in advance.

A maid even came forward to ask if Cheng Yiyi needed anything at this hour, offering to help.

But Cheng Yiyi had been poor for too long. She couldn’t get used to being waited on in such a short time.

So she walked to the kitchen on her own.

“This should be it… right?”

“Someone’s here?”

What came into view was a fairly young man.

He had a work badge hanging on his chest, and with that outfit, he was clearly the private chef.

He was resting right now. Since all the masters of the house had gone out recently, his work had become easy. Of course he was going to slack off.

Lin Zhiwei was munching on watermelon and scrolling through short videos. He completely failed to notice Cheng Yiyi entering the kitchen.

It was only when Cheng Yiyi’s footsteps came close that he suddenly put his things away and quickly tossed the half-gnawed watermelon into the trash can.

He looked up and said, “Ah… Miss, I’m sorry, I didn’t notice you come in. Are you hungry? Tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll make it right away.”

He was panicking badly.

The master and madam had said he needed to treat this returning miss well. If the hospitality was lacking, he could be kicked out the door tomorrow.

Lin Zhiwei had no idea what Cheng Yiyi’s temper was like! If this young lady threw a tantrum, his job would really be gone.

Cheng Yiyi didn’t answer right away. She seemed to be thinking.

Her gaze moved down to the floor on its own, landing on the juice spots the chef had inevitably splattered while eating.

“I’m sorry! I’ll, I’ll wipe it up right now!”

The alarm bells in Lin Zhiwei’s mind were ringing. He quickly pulled out a rag, bent down, and prepared to clean the floor.

“There’s a mop.”

Cheng Yiyi pointed at the corner of the kitchen and reminded him softly.

“Ah… oh.”

Of course, Lin Zhiwei knew the tools were there. He just wanted to keep his posture low to avoid making the young lady unhappy. But since she had already spoken up, he couldn’t refuse.

After cleaning the floor, he washed his hands, put on gloves, and asked, “Miss, what would you like to eat? There’s fruit in the fridge too, I can get some for you. Oh, right. The watermelon I was eating was bought by me from outside. If you’d like some, the fridge has seedless watermelon prepared just for you.”

“Fruit won’t hold off hunger. I want a proper meal.” Cheng Yiyi said. “Just make a few of your signature dishes. I’m not picky.”

“Alright. You can wait in your room or the living room. I’ll bring it to you in a bit.”

“Mm, thanks.”

Cheng Yiyi turned and left after speaking. The chef breathed a sigh of relief.

‘Phew. Looks like the miss isn’t as hard to get along with as I imagined. The master and madam are really something, making the punishment sound so severe. Scared me half to death…’

Recalling Cheng Yiyi’s words, Lin Zhiwei began to ponder, muttering under his breath, ‘My signature dishes? Just not sure if they’ll suit her taste.’

While thinking, he started rummaging through the kitchen for all sorts of expensive ingredients…

Cheng Yiyi was waiting in the living room at the moment.

She didn’t want to dirty her room, so she planned to eat right there in the living room.

The enormous living room was lit with luxurious, extravagant lights that illuminated everything around her. Sitting there alone, Cheng Yiyi felt a little empty.

Before long, the dishes were brought out one after another.

There was no way a single chef could manage such efficiency on his own.

Each dish was made with extreme care, with smaller portions for Cheng Yiyi to taste.

But as the number of dishes grew, she couldn’t help feeling puzzled. She asked the servant who had finished serving and was about to leave, “Are you all going to eat too?”

“Ah?” The servant who was about to head back to the kitchen to help looked dumbfounded.

Still, she answered truthfully, “To answer you, Miss. We’re on the night shift. Our meal time is set apart from yours. We only gather to eat around three or four in the morning.”

“Then I can’t finish all this either.” Cheng Yiyi pointed at the dazzling array of dishes on the table. “This is almost enough for three people.”

“Oh, you don’t need to worry about that. Just throw away whatever’s left. After you’re finished eating, feel free to go straight back to your room. Leave the rest to us.”

After saying that, the servant made sure Cheng Yiyi had no other questions before turning and leaving.

“Hm?”

A puzzled voice came from behind.

Cheng Yiyi turned around and saw a man in simple clothes with a handsome face.

“Who are you?”

The other party didn’t know Cheng Yiyi, but Cheng Yiyi recognized him!

This was Shen Xingyao, the third young master of the Shen family!

According to the steward, this young master was extremely unruly!
