Chapter 123: The Trap Begins

“Damn it!”

Kwon-oh roared and flung the ashtray sitting on his desk.

It hit the floor with a loud bang and rolled across the room.

“Joo Hyunwoo!”

Shouting Hyunwoo’s name, he unleashed a heavy wave of pheromones.

He growled like a beast.

“How dare he… pull something like this?”

His eyes were fixed on the white screen in front of him.

Articles exposing Kwon-oh and L&S’s corruption were erupting everywhere online.

Most lacked solid evidence and could be brushed off—
but some were surprisingly sharp.

Kwon-oh clenched his teeth.

There was only one person who would do this.

Joo Hyunwoo.

He’d acted lukewarm all this time, but behind the scenes, he’d been plotting this.

Crafty bastard.

“S-sir… Director…”

“What?”

His secretary cautiously approached—
despite knowing speaking to him now was practically suicide.

“T-the prosecution contacted us.”

“What?”

“It seems there was an internal whistleblower from one of the subcontractors.
They want to question you regarding related matters…”

“Shit.”

Kwon-oh raked his hair roughly.

He’d thought noise from subcontractors was nothing serious—
but the prosecution stepping in?

If this reached the old Chairman’s ears, it would be a disaster.

“Stall for time.
And if we have any senior prosecutors on our payroll, switch the case assignment to them.”

“Yes, sir.”

The secretary bowed and hurried out to escape the storm.

Kwon-oh scowled, left alone.

What now?

Joo Hyunwoo.
If that bastard thought he could get away with this unharmed, he was dead wrong.

Kwon-oh’s eyes glinted dangerously.

Bzzzt, bzzzt.

“…….”

His phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

[Caller ID Restricted]

A blocked number.

But he knew exactly who it was and answered.

“What? I told you not to call when things are chaotic.”

— Busy, are we?

“Just get to the point.”

The man on the line chuckled.
His voice was low and smooth.

— Very well.
Since your situation looks rough, I’ll keep it brief.

“…Wait.”

— Yes?

The amused voice shifted, puzzled.

Kwon-oh asked seriously.

“Has Joo Hyunwoo ever visited the club as a guest?”

— …You mean Hyunwoo-ssi?

The voice lifted, clearly confused.
Then he answered coolly.

— Not even once, as far as I know.

“Hm.”

— May I ask why?

The man’s voice grew sly.
Kwon-oh smirked, tapping his desk with his finger.

“I think we need to bring Joo Hyunwoo there.”

— So you’re finally doing it?
You refused every time I suggested it.

“…I have my reasons now.”

— Very well.
I’ll prepare the place.

“You have a method?”

— If not, we make one.

Confidence dripped from the man’s voice.

Kwon-oh’s lips curled upward.

His eyes darkened.

“Hm.”

Hyunwoo tilted his head.

It was strange how quiet Cha Kwon-oh’s side was.

He expected a tantrum, threats, or retaliation.

But nothing.

Either the damage wasn’t as bad as expected…
or he was planning something again.

His silence was unsettling.

Even as Hyunwoo returned to work, an uncomfortable feeling clung to him.

The whistleblowing from partner companies continued,
but it still wasn’t enough to crush Kwon-oh completely.

They needed something more decisive.

And they still hadn’t caught the data thief.

Nothing was over yet.

“Director, here are the meeting materials.”

“Thank you.”

At least the project was allowed to continue.

Morale among the team members was slowly recovering.

“Haa…”

After the meeting, Hyunwoo returned to his office.

Throughout the discussion, an empty seat kept bothering him.

He looked down at his dark phone screen.

Ever since he sent Seunghyuk home that day,
the man had not returned to work.

He understood.

Hyunwoo believed in Seunghyuk’s innocence,
but the employees didn’t.

“…….”

And after that day, Seunghyuk never contacted him.

He hadn’t come home either.

No idea where he was or what he was doing.

Should he call him?

Tell him that once they caught the data thief,
he could return—that their personal relationship was over,
but the project wasn’t.

Maybe he should say that.

But he couldn’t bring himself to call.

Ever since regression, Seunghyuk had always been the one to reach out first.

Now that he had to be the one to do it… he hesitated.

“Damn…”

Thinking of Seunghyuk tangled his heart.

Ever since that confession at the inn,
his chest throbbed at random moments.

Now his emotions were a chaotic mess.

Bzzzt, bzzzt.

“…!”

Hyunwoo flinched, snapped from his trance.

He looked at the phone—

Every time it vibrated, he automatically thought of someone.

Maybe this time… it was Seunghyuk.

[Hyunjin]

“…Ah.”

But it wasn’t.
It was Hyunjin.

He must be calling to say what time his trip return would be.

If it wasn’t Seunghyuk, it wasn’t.

Why did it disappoint him?

Hyunwoo shook his head sharply and picked up the call.

“Yeah, Hyunjin.”

— ……

“Hyunjin?”

No answer.

Only ragged breathing.

Strange noises mixed in.

“Hyunjin, what’s wrong?”

Did something happen on the trip?

Hyunwoo’s mind filled with every horrible scenario.

He clenched his fist unconsciously.

— Hyung…

“It’s me.
What happened—”

— Ugh…

“Hyunjin!”

A faint groan—
then his voice cut out.

Hyunwoo panicked.

He called again sharply.

“Hyunjin!”

— Hello?
Hyunwoo-ssi?

“You’re…”

An unfamiliar person answered.
But the voice was familiar.

Hyunwoo frowned.

“Hwang Dokyung…?”

— Ah, sorry.
You must’ve been shocked.
Hyunjin drank way too much by mistake and passed out.

“Is he okay?”

— Yes, he’s just drunk.
But I don’t know his home address,
so could you come pick him up?

“I’ll leave right now.”

— I’ll text you the location.

“Please do.”

Hyunwoo immediately stood up.

It was almost time to leave work anyway.

“…Hm? This address…”

He checked the message and frowned.

The address was in Seoul.

He thought the trip location was out of town.

Maybe they stopped somewhere near home to hang out more.

Then it made sense that Dokyung—
who didn’t go on the trip—was with him now.

Either way, he needed to hurry.

An Omega drunk and defenseless?
Way too dangerous.

Hyunwoo drove anxiously.

“Hm?”

At that moment, his car’s Bluetooth showed an incoming call.

The name on the screen—

Seunghyuk.

Hyunwoo stared at those three letters.

Why now?

Should he answer?

He hesitated—
but the light turned red,
so he answered.

“…Hello?”

— Hyung!
Where are you right now?

“What?”

No greeting—
just “Where are you?”

Hyunwoo frowned.

After everything…
he calls, and that’s the first thing he says?

“I’m driving.”

— So where are you going?

“Ha…
Why do I need to tell you that?”

— Hyung, I’m serious.
Where are you going?

“…….”

It wouldn’t be a problem to tell him—
but the way he asked made Hyunwoo uncomfortable.

Why ask like this?

He replied coldly.

“I’m going to pick up Hyunjin.
Don’t know where exactly—
I just got an address.”

— Hyung, I’ll go instead.
Please turn around and go home.

“What?”

— Please.
Now.

“…….”

Hyunwoo gripped the steering wheel tightly.

This wasn’t okay.

Telling him what to do without explanation?

Hyunwoo bristled.

“Why should I listen to you?”

— Hyung…

“And you won’t even tell me why?”

— ……

Even when asked directly, Seunghyuk stayed silent.

Hyunwoo let out a short, bitter laugh.
