Join the ServerEmerging from the Militia Office, Gusede found himself unable to calm down. The pent-up frustration within him finally erupted into a fierce punch, striking heavily against the doorpost.
The hidden truth from five years ago filled him with a profound sense of disgust.
Just as Gusede was about to depart, a voice called out to him. “What’s wrong, brother? You look like you’re in a rather foul mood.”
Gusede turned his head, realizing it was Gaude.
“Not so good. I’ve uncovered some rather unpleasant history.” Gusede shook his head, then added, “Never mind that. How much do you know about Archmages?”
“Archmages?” Gaude scratched his head. “I don’t know much, only that one must be able to use magic to become an Archmage. The ability to wield magic is innate, naturally awakening as one reaches a certain age.”
Gusede glanced at him in surprise. “You seem to know quite a lot, don’t you?”
“My family told me,” Gaude explained. “I once dreamed of becoming an Archmage, but later discovered I simply didn’t have the talent.” He then changed the subject, “But why are you suddenly asking about this today, brother?”
Gusede fell silent for a moment. “Gaude… if, and I mean *if*, one day you became an Archmage, and the town faced a great danger, requiring your sacrifice to save it, what would you do?”
“Why such a grim question all of a sudden?” Gaude pondered before answering, “If it were to protect my family, I would.”
Gusede remained silent, not voicing the heaviest part of his hypothetical scenario.
“What’s wrong with you today? You’re being so cryptic. Are you so exhausted you’ve gone mad?” Gaude reached out to touch Gusede’s forehead. “Your temperature is normal, no fever?”
Gusede swatted his hand away. “Stop messing around. I’m fine. I’m just utterly exhausted today. Let’s head back.”
Watching Gusede walk away first, Gaude looked somewhat perplexed. “…What’s gotten into this guy today?”
Still puzzled, Gaude followed him, then clapped Gusede on the shoulder. “Hey, if you want to know about Archmages, you could always ask Mulee Hua.”
“Mulee Hua?” Gusede rolled his eyes at his friend. Why would he ever ask *her* about such a thing? Wouldn’t that just be awkward?
“Heh heh! Brother, look who that is.” Gaude slung an arm over Gusede’s shoulder, pointing towards the edge of town.
“Hmm?” Gusede followed Gaude’s gaze. Outside the town, a delicate and pretty figure stood.
“Isn’t that Mulee Hua? What is she doing?”
“Uh… teasing a cat, I think?” Gaude sounded unsure. “Want to go chat her up, brother?”
“You go if you want to.” Gusede shook his head, his expression complex as he looked at the distant girl. “I don’t want to make a fool of myself.”
“No way, brother. Are you really not interested in women? Mulee Hua is the prettiest girl in town!”
“By your tone, you’re interested in her?” Gusede turned to look at his friend.
“Of course! What normal man in this town wouldn’t have some thoughts about her?” Gaude watched the girl taming the cat in the distance, stroking his chin. “And she’s truly a very special girl.”
“Is she?” Gusede couldn’t help but ask, “What’s so special about her?”
“She’s beautiful, prefers solitude, and when you look at her, it feels like her body is here, but her thoughts are far away. She’s undoubtedly an interesting girl. Very, very special. She loves burying herself in books or playing with small cats and dogs. It just feels like she’s always in her own world, out of sync with everyone else in town.”
Gusede’s gaze towards Gaude gradually became subtle. “You… are you some kind of pervert? Observing her so closely?!”
Gaude quickly waved his hands. “No, no, no! This is just normal male appreciation for a woman.”
“I thought normal male appreciation for women should be like the Captain’s.” With that, Gusede cleared his throat and mimicked Odur’s deep voice. “A woman’s worth is judged by two things: first, if her hips are wide enough to bear sons. Second, if she can cook and provide for a man.”
“Get out of here, don’t compare me to such a boor.” Gaude laughed, playfully punching Gusede, then shifted his gaze back to the distant girl. “Still, Mulee Hua is incomparably beautiful. Her appearance is so striking, but it’s a pity her personality is a bit strange, unlike any of us, with no similarities to anyone else in town.”
Gaude’s eyes revealed a hint of infatuation. “It’s as if she’s a young lady from a big city, elegant and refined.”
“No, I think you’ve been single for too long and have too many fantasies about women.” Gusede’s expression was somewhat disdainful. “I think you should find a girlfriend.”
“You’re right, my friend!” Gaude looked eager. “I’ve decided! I’m absolutely going to make Mulee Hua Apocalys my future wife!”
Gusede was speechless. He could only reach out and give his fantasizing friend a hard flick on the forehead. “Wake up, you. Stop daydreaming. Every girl isn’t your wife. Last time, you said you were going to pursue Agnes.”
“This is different,” Gaude immediately retorted. “Mulee Hua is special. Besides, a man always needs to have dreams.”
Without a shred of regard for his friend’s feelings, Gusede directly scoffed, “With you, forget Mulee Hua, even the old widow at the town entrance wouldn’t look twice at you.”
“You!” Gaude angrily threw a punch.
The two playfully brawled for a while, and Gaude temporarily put aside his intention of going to chat with Mulee Hua.
As he departed, Gusede’s gaze lingered on Mulee Hua for a long time.
‘That girl… after experiencing what happened back then, what kind of attitude does she truly hold towards the town?’
‘Perhaps her unwillingness to join the militia is precisely because of that…’ Thinking this, Gusede couldn’t help but feel a touch of self-mockery. ‘Before, I even said those things to her.’
‘Calling her a hero’s daughter, that’s truly…’
‘…ironic.’
