Join the ServerJiang Xiaoyu finally saw her clearly, even more vividly than when he had first awakened on the bed—his Goddess wife was beautiful. To be precise, she was the living, breathing version of the Dongfang he had seen earlier. Same features, same silhouette, but while that Dongfang had been composed of light—like a moving painting—this one had warmth. Her eyelashes fluttered, and her breath, carrying a faint, fresh fragrance, brushed against his face.
“Answer me!”
The sudden shout exploded right in Jiang Xiaoyu’s ear, making him nearly flip backward out of his chair. It turned out Dongfang Yueli wasn’t leaning in for intimacy; she was merely using the proximity to shout into his ear.
“Yueli, what do you want me to say?” he asked, stuttering.
Dongfang Yueli didn’t pull back, maintaining the oppressive closeness as she arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “What did you call me?”
Jiang Xiaoyu caught on instantly, quickly changing his tune with a respectful bow. “My lady.”
Dongfang Yueli glanced at the paper doll trembling on the side, then turned her gaze back to Jiang Xiaoyu, her expression enigmatic. “In this Heart Demon Illusion, I don’t mind you calling me ‘my lady’ since we truly share a marital destiny. But now that we’ve passed the three steps of the alliance—what should you call me now?”
Jiang Xiaoyu understood her meaning immediately and shouted with a grin, “Boss.”
Dongfang Yueli laughed—a laugh full of delight, joy, and triumph.
She pointed a finger at Jiang Xiaoyu and turned to the doll: “He… he isn’t stupid at all, hahaha…”
The doll waved its hands while nodding vigorously, as if to say, “Not stupid, not stupid at all; he’s quite sharp.”
As the laughter faded, Dongfang Yueli flickered. Before Jiang Xiaoyu could blink, she was back, leaning languidly against her chair, sneering as she crossed her long, slender legs.
Jiang Xiaoyu stared, unable to believe his eyes. He rubbed them and looked again, then let out a bitter laugh. “My lady, what are you doing? Planning to become a bandit queen?”
The doll covered its mouth with its paper hands, looking shocked.
Seeing their reactions, Dongfang Yueli scoffed: “Short hair, shorter vision. Ask yourself, what boss doesn’t sit like this? You two, stand up straight for me.”
“But…” Jiang Xiaoyu raised a hand to correct her. “We are a cultivation alliance. Shouldn’t we be considered a righteous sect?”
Dongfang Yueli gasped, “Oh no!” She immediately sat up straight, her eyes twinkling as she regained her professional demeanor. “Vice-Alliance Leader Jiang, this seat is asking you—within 1314, have you seen Wanxing?”
Jiang Xiaoyu pointed at Dongfang Yueli and laughed: “No, I only ended up here because I entered her room by mistake.”
The doll nodded at Jiang Xiaoyu’s words, confirming it was the truth.
Dongfang Yueli, realizing it was the truth, grew suspicious: “That shouldn’t be. I clearly felt her return to 1314. Why didn’t she stop you when you rushed into her room? Also… I gave them orders—whoever approached that room was to be killed on sight.”
The doll pondered for a moment, then nodded. This, too, was the truth.
Jiang Xiaoyu was stunned. “You gave orders? Who is she to you?”
Dongfang Yueli sighed, lowering her eyes, her voice dropping significantly. “She is my Divine Consciousness. Ever since I entered this Heart Demon Illusion, she has spiraled out of control. Otherwise, how could a dignified Goddess like me be reduced to using these mere, trivial talismans?”
Jiang Xiaoyu was shocked beyond belief. This was so preposterous it completely upended his understanding of reality.
He stared fixedly at the pondering doll, hoping to learn if this was fact or fiction.
After a long while, the doll nodded at him. It was the truth!
Seeing the nod, Jiang Xiaoyu sprang to his feet, hurriedly chasing the line of questioning: “Then who is Dongfang?”
Dongfang Yueli looked up at him: “You were hugging me and calling out for ‘Dongfang’—are you so dense that you haven’t guessed that she is a part of me?”
“She’s your clone?”
“Inaccurate.” Dongfang Yueli lifted her chin slightly, her tone brimming with inherent pride. “They are my Primordial Dao Seeds. I am a cultivator of both Light and Darkness, the only one in ten millennia of the Daoist gates, the most renowned and gifted genius of the Immortal Realm.”
Jiang Xiaoyu’s mouth twitched. He turned directly to the doll and asked: “Is she lying again?”
The doll nodded.
Jiang Xiaoyu’s smile froze. “You mean… what she said is true?”
The doll nodded.
Jiang Xiaoyu slowly slumped back into his chair. “My god, Dongfang Yueli… you’re that powerful?”
Dongfang Yueli scoffed: “Feel inferior now, do you? Let’s see if you dare to call me ‘my lady’ again. Do you know how many people would hunt you down if word of this reached the Immortal Realm?”
The doll nodded solemnly, looking at Jiang Xiaoyu with genuine worry.
Hearing this, Jiang Xiaoyu instead felt a strange clarity. He fell silent for a moment, then a curve appeared at the corners of his mouth. It wasn’t a bitter laugh or a mocking one; it was the smile of someone who had worked through his confusion and found a sense of resolve.
Since she shares a marital destiny with me, I have to seize it; otherwise, am I even a man? If my strength isn’t enough, I’ll just have to cultivate—starting today, I, Jiang Xiaoyu, will learn Daoist arts from my Goddess wife and protect her properly.
He curled his lips in a smile, his voice not loud, yet measured word by word: “What is mine is mine, and I will protect it well. As for those harboring designs upon it, I don’t mind beating them until their teeth are scattered across the floor.”
The paper doll bounded three feet into the air, clapping frantically, its paper hands smacking together with crisp, loud pops.
Dongfang Yueli’s eyes lit up as she looked at Jiang Xiaoyu, her gaze holding something undefinable.
After a long while, she sighed softly: “You possess a bit of a man’s courage after all. However… only for this single lifetime. For this lifetime, I am willing to accept you, because you, having transmigrated here by accident, have become part of this Heart Demon Illusion—a romantic calamity that I can no longer sever.”
Hearing this, Jiang Xiaoyu burst into laughter, open and completely devoid of gloom: “A fleeting, yellow-millet dream, is it? Fine by me; being husband and wife for a single lifetime works too. I will be a proper husband and help you break free from this Heart Demon Illusion as quickly as possible. Afterward, you go be your goddess, and I’ll go study at my vocational college, never to meet again.”
The paper doll covered its eyes with both hands, its tiny paper shoulders heaving up and down. In its simple mind, both of these things were undeniably true, yet completely contradictory—Dongfang Yueli genuinely wished to be husband and wife with him for a lifetime, and Jiang Xiaoyu genuinely wanted to help her escape the Heart Demon Illusion. Yet that very sincerity doomed them to never remain husband and wife for a lifetime. Both intentions were completely genuine, and the more the doll thought about it, the more its nose stung with sorrow.
Dongfang Yueli sighed softly in her heart, saying no more. She turned her head away, gazing toward the horizon where the first pale white light of dawn was breaking, her thoughts unreadable.
“Wife,” Jiang Xiaoyu’s voice drifted from behind her, “judging by Dongfang’s situation, Lengyue must be one of your Dao seeds as well. But who is that mysterious Xiaoqi? Dongfang, Lengyue, and Wanxing can all command her.”
Dongfang Yueli did not turn around, her voice carrying a trace of weariness: “My Nascent Soul. Snatched away by that wicked Purple Palace, Room 1314, and dropped into a land of aberrations. I haven’t been able to retrieve it yet.”
“Why can’t you retrieve it?”
“It appears to be right there, but in truth, it resides across multidimensional space. I cannot lock onto its exact coordinates; taking it back is easier said than done.”
The doll nodded, confirming the truth of her words.
Jiang Xiaoyu pondered for a moment, asking again: “I’ve read plenty of cultivation novels. The Purple Palace should be a cultivator’s dantian—since it’s a dantian, how could it slip out of your control?”
Dongfang Yueli stood up, walked to the window, and gently pushed it open.
The cool breeze before dawn poured inside, rustling the stray hairs across her forehead. Gazing at that sliver of gold along the horizon, she remained silent for a long time.
Just as Jiang Xiaoyu assumed she didn’t want to talk about it and prepared to change the subject, she spoke.
“Since childhood, my constitution has been abnormal. Half angel, half demon—even my physical body was like this.” Her voice was very soft, like telling a tale from a long, long time ago. “And so, I gave up my title as a princess, seeking medicine and asking after the Dao, becoming an itinerant rogue cultivator roaming mountains and rivers, hoping to find a method to resolve the abnormalities in my body. Until one day, inside a cave on Mount Kunlun, I unexpectedly obtained a mirror.”
“A mirror?”
“Yes! A mirror! It was transparent front and back, hollow in the center, and breathtakingly beautiful. While toying with it, my Light and Dark Dao seeds stirred. With a thought, I split a strand of Light and Dark power to fuse into the front and back of the mirror respectively. That was when a miracle occurred—Light and Dark operated without interfering with one another, condensing a spirit within the hollow center.”
She paused, “That spirit! It was the primordial vitality that countless Daoists dream of. From that moment, I officially stepped onto the path of immortal cultivation. And that mirror became my natal magical artifact, which I named—the Purple Palace.”
“At first, my cultivation was exceptionally rapid, and I soon ascended to the Immortal Realm. Once in the Immortal Realm, my strength remained unrivaled among my peers.”
Reaching this point, her voice suddenly sank, “It was right then that the flaws of the Purple Palace began to surface.”
Jiang Xiaoyu: “The Heart Demon Illusion?”
Dongfang Yueli sighed: “Yes, the Heart Demon Illusion, which you call the aberration descent. My body would be dragged by the Purple Palace into unknown worlds to undergo tribulations, over and over, time and time again, torturing me so terribly I wished for death, yet entirely unable to break free.”
Just then, the morning sun finally crested the horizon.
“I’ll help you!”
Dongfang Yueli turned her head sharply. The light of the morning sun passed through the carved window lattice, spilling across Jiang Xiaoyu’s side profile, plating his outline with an exceptionally faint golden edge.
He smiled and continued: “I will send you away, thousands of miles away…”
