Chapter 13: Dongfang Yueli

Jiang Xiaoyu, consumed by indignation, raised his hand and swiped away the hand Dongfang had been using to grip his collar.

“Hey, hey, hey—these are things you told me yourself! All that talk about Dongfang, Lengyue, and Wanxing, and now you’re going back on your word? Tsk, tsk, tsk—don’t tell me you’ve been lying to me with a fake name the whole time?”

Dongfang and Qinghe exchanged a glance, a surge of incredulous shock rolling through their eyes.

“How could you possibly know about them?”

“Young Master, you… you aren’t foolish anymore?”

Both voices rang out in unison. Dongfang flicked her gaze toward Qinghe, who immediately realized she had overstepped her bounds. She lowered her head and eyes, not daring to utter another syllable.

Just as Jiang Xiaoyu was about to respond, two figures suddenly lunged from behind the rockery, throwing him to the ground, one from the left and one from the right. Before he could react, warm, soft kisses landed repeatedly on his face with loud, smacking sounds.

“Ancestors be praised! My child is finally no longer a fool!”

“My son, you’ve finally woken up. Mother is so incredibly happy!”

Jiang Xiaoyu was bewildered by the barrage of kisses. He scrambled and thrashed, trying to block them, but he was no match for the two of them, who were currently weeping and hysterical with excitement.

A long while later, “Dongfang” gave a soft cough, breaking the commotion in the courtyard. She spoke with a hint of awkwardness, “Father, Mother, why have you come here?”

The Prince of Huai and the Princess finally snapped back to reality, realizing their current disheveled state was beneath the dignity of the royal manor.

They coughed separately, reluctantly rising from Jiang Xiaoyu’s body and moving to straighten their messy attire. Yet, they kept a firm grip on him, terrified that if they let go for even a second, their son—who had only just regained his sanity—would revert to the dim-witted child who spent his days giggling foolishly.

The truth was, Jiang Xiaoyu’s loud arguments in the courtyard had caused such a stir that the entire Huai Manor had been awakened. Fearing that their foolish son might say something inappropriate and offend his daughter-in-law, the Prince and Princess had thrown on their robes and rushed over. They had heard his clear, articulate, and well-reasoned words from outside the courtyard, and at that moment, they had nearly fainted from joy.

Fourteen years ago, Young Master Xiao Junlin was born a natural simpleton. At their wits’ end, the couple had traveled personally to a Daoist temple to beg the Celestial Master Tianyuan for a prophecy.

The Master had spoken: the simpleton son could only break his fate and reverse his destiny if he married the eldest daughter of the Marquis of Ning’an.

The Prince of Huai and the Marquis of Ning’an were comrades who had fought through life and death together. When this request was made, the Marquis had agreed without hesitation. He only stipulated one condition: his daughter must follow her late mother’s last wish and cultivate at the Heavenly Secret Gate, only returning to marry the Young Master once she came of age.

The Prince of Huai had naturally agreed, immediately splitting the ancestral military seal in two. He sent the Tiger Howl seal to the Marquis’s manor as a grand betrothal gift, while keeping the other half, the Dragon Soar jade pendant, for his own child.

Everything that happened today had indeed confirmed Master Tianyuan’s prophecy.

The Princess pressed her palms together, hot tears rolling down her cheeks once more. “Yueli, you are the great benefactor of our Huai Manor, the lucky star of my child!”

The Prince nodded repeatedly, his usually stern eyes also reddening and warming.

Jiang Xiaoyu, listening on the sidelines, felt that things were becoming increasingly strange. Hearing the intimate way the two elders called her “Yueli,” his anger flared. He raised a finger and pointed at the person before him, indignantly questioning: “Ha! You really are something! So you’ve been lying to me with a fake name the whole time! I’ve been calling you Dongfang every single day—it turns out it was all a lie!”

The Prince of Huai immediately flicked his sleeve and turned away, his expression suddenly stern as he barked, “Rebellious son, stop your nonsense!”

As his voice fell, he turned his gaze back toward Dongfang Yueli, his sharp, stern features instantly softening with deep affection. He spoke gently to soothe her: “Yueli, do not take offense. He has only just regained his senses, so his speech is still disjointed. You, my daughter-in-law, need not lose your temper with him.”

The Princess hurried forward to block Jiang Xiaoyu, pinching his ear. Between anger and affection, she chided: “You rebellious child! How dare you speak to your own wife like that? Her name is Dongfang Yueli; her surname is Dongfang! Before, it was your wits that were dull, and you couldn’t remember her full name; now you’re turning the tables and trying to act like the aggrieved party toward my good daughter-in-law?”

“Exactly so,” the Prince chimed in immediately.

At this moment, Dongfang Yueli was completely distracted. Not half of the elders’ soothing words had reached her ears. Her heart was consumed by a lingering question—why had Xiao Junlin suddenly regained his clarity? And how did he know the secret hidden in her Purple Palace, a secret that no outsider could possibly know?

‘The names Dongfang, Lengyue, and Wanxing—those were names I secretly gave to the Dao seeds in my Purple Palace; I have never spoken them to anyone. How could he possibly know?!’

She steadied her heart, bowed slightly to the two elders, and offered a soft, proper smile. “My husband regaining his senses is a joyous occasion above all others. He is simply being playful with his words; Yueli is happy to indulge him, so why would I take offense?”

The Princess’s expression brightened at these words, and she heaped praise upon her daughter-in-law for her poise and grace. Then, she turned and glared fiercely at Jiang Xiaoyu, her tone sharp: “You treat your wife well from here on out! If I ever detect the slightest hint of negligence, I will show you no mercy!”

The Prince added his own threat, his voice low: “Not just no mercy—I shall strip the skin from his back myself!”

Jiang Xiaoyu was left dumbfounded, feeling that the situation had gone completely off the rails. “Are you two his real parents, or hers? How can you take her side to such an extreme! It’s clearly her who lied—saying her name is Dongfang, and then there’s Lengyue…”

Before he could finish, Dongfang Yueli flickered, darted forward, and abruptly clamped a hand over his mouth.

She turned back to face the Prince and Princess of Huai, wearing an appropriately bashful and flustered expression, explaining softly: “Father, Mother, my husband was speaking without thinking. He was about to share the private words of our bridal chamber, which left this daughter-in-law utterly mortified, forcing me to cut him off so abruptly.”

“Truly insolent! That rebellious son!” The Prince immediately turned his back, thoroughly annoyed.

The Princess felt both exasperated and amused, reaching out to pinch his other ear: “Junlin! Behave yourself! Listen closely to Yueli’s words, and no more spouting nonsense!”

Being pinched until he cried out for mercy, Jiang Xiaoyu nodded frantically. Only then did the Princess let go, carefully rubbing his reddened earlobe, smiling gently at Dongfang Yueli: “The hour is late. You two return to your room and rest; we shall not disturb you further.”

Dongfang Yueli maintained a dignified posture, curtsying slightly, her every movement devoid of the slightest flaw.

Just as the two turned to leave, the Prince suddenly spoke in a grave tone: “Hold on.” Reaching into his robes, he produced a translucent, vibrant emerald jade pendant—the very half of the Dragon Soar military tally.

Holding the pendant before Jiang Xiaoyu’s eyes, his arm trembling faintly, he asked with cautious, tender anticipation: “Junlin, Father will test you: do you recognize what this is?”

Jiang Xiaoyu squinted to take a look. Though his poor vision kept him from making out the finer details, he could still clearly see that the pendant was lustrous, translucent, and extraordinary—certainly no common trinket.

He was ecstatic inwardly: Who cares what aberration instance this is, snagging a valuable treasure to pocket and take back is the real deal.

Seeing him stand in a daze, the Princess felt the glimmer of hope in her heart instantly shatter. Softening, she hurriedly stepped forward to intervene: “Husband, the child has only just regained his senses; why must you ask such a difficult question? Take it step by step, slowly and gently.”

Looking at his clueless expression, a heavy disappointment flashed through the Prince’s eyes. Sighing softly, he moved to tuck the pendant back into his robes: “Father was too impatient.”

Yet in the very split second before the pendant disappeared into his clothes, Jiang Xiaoyu’s hand shot out, snatching it firmly. Weighing the pendant in his hand, his eyes curved into crescents with a beaming smile: “Thank you, Father and Mother, for gifting me this jade pendant! I was just worrying that my clothes were too plain, lacking some precious ornaments to back up my presence—wearing this is the only way to match my title as the Young Master!”

As the words landed, the entire courtyard fell dead silent.

The Prince’s eyes turned crimson in an instant. His lips trembled repeatedly for a long while before he could no longer suppress the surging waves in his heart, shouting repeatedly: “Good… Good! Good!”

The Princess clamped her silk handkerchief over her lips, desperately holding back her sobs, yet scalding tears fell uncontrollably in steady drops.

No one understood the weight of this Dragon Soar jade pendant better than the two of them. It was not merely half of the Huai Manor’s military tally, commanding a hundred thousand elite border troops, but also the token of betrothal between Xiao Junlin and Dongfang Yueli.

Dongfang Yueli had once promised in person: if Xiao Junlin could wear the Dragon Soar jade pendant on his person in this lifetime, she would fully accept her identity as the Young Master’s consort, peacefully keeping him company and bearing his children. If he could not, once the seven-year term was complete, she would sever her mortal ties and return to the Heavenly Secret Gate, never touching the mundane world again.

In the past, the Prince had taken out this jade pendant as well, but the foolish Xiao Junlin of that time had casually hurled it straight into the lotus pond with a flick of his wrist. Since then, the Prince had never brought it out again.

This test today was originally meant to gauge how much of his wits his son had recovered, to see if he could shoulder the manor’s hopes. Never had he expected that he would not only take it proactively, but even hang it around his neck with a bright smile.

For a long time afterward, the Prince and Princess showered Jiang Xiaoyu with kisses and caresses, doting over their recovered child in every possible way, giving the watching Dongfang Yueli a full body of goosebumps.

Jiang Xiaoyu, on the other hand, was thrilled to hold such a treasure, playing the obedient child with sweet words and flattering the elders flawlessly.

As the sky gradually brightened, Dongfang Yueli finally saw off the reluctant Prince and Princess.

The courtyard gate gently closed, the distant footsteps fading away completely, leaving only three people remaining in the courtyard. Dongfang Yueli slowly turned around, her complex, heavy gaze settling firmly upon Jiang Xiaoyu.

“Follow me into the room; I have questions for you.”

With that, she lifted her skirt, took a step forward, and walked straight into the bedroom.

Qinghe stood rooted to the spot, her cheeks blushing scarlet, her thoughts a tangled mess as she lowered her head. Sensing Jiang Xiaoyu’s gaze turning her way, her throat tightened. Letting out a soft whimper, she hurriedly stepped forward to support Jiang Xiaoyu’s arm, her voice as faint as a mosquito’s buzz: “This servant will assist the Young Master back to the room.”

“Thank you.”

Two simple words made the heat on Qinghe’s cheeks flare even hotter.

She parted her lips, hesitating several times to speak, but in the end merely supported the person before her steadily.

The morning breeze brushed gently against the willow branches, crushing the day’s first rays of light and scattering them across the awakening world.

Now that… he… is well… I wonder if he still remembers his past sincerity…

A faint sigh drifted into the air, as if someone had entrusted their unfinished words to the gentle breeze.
