Join the ServerShi Zhiyu’s gaze darkened slightly as he drawled, “If you’re so confident, then why don’t you want to return to China sooner?”
“Your parents and your older brother ask me about you every time we talk. They may not say it outright, but they’re always thinking about you.”
Song Yan immediately deflated and flopped back onto the sofa, waving his hand in resignation.
“I don’t want to go back. My older brother is already holding down the family business. They don’t need me.”
“If I go back, I’ll be dragged straight into the company for an internship. Nine-to-five every day, working myself to death. I just want to stay out here, enjoy my freedom, and happily live the life of a rich second-generation heir.”
Shi Zhiyu’s thin lips parted slightly.
“Avoiding it for a while won’t help. You’ll have to take over the family business sooner or later. Instead of putting it off, you might as well get used to it early.”
“I’m not listening, I’m not listening!” Song Yan simply closed his eyes and pretended not to hear him, shamelessly playing dumb.
Shi Zhiyu turned his head helplessly.
“Then stay here by yourself and prepare for your exams.”
The moment he heard that, Song Yan shot upright.
“That won’t do!”
“We said we’d be brothers for life, walking side by side. Wherever you go, I go. If you return to China, I have to go with you!”
Suddenly remembering something, Song Yan asked curiously, “By the way, after you return to China, are you going straight into your family’s group to take over the business?”
Shi Zhiyu closed the document and lightly tapped his fingers against the desk.
“No. I’ve already applied for enrollment at Jiang University. I’ll go to Jiang University to study after returning to China.”
“???”
Song Yan’s pupils practically shook with shock.
He stared at Shi Zhiyu in a daze, wondering if he had heard wrong.
“Wait… What did you say?”
“I didn’t hear that wrong, did I? You’re already a PhD student at M University, and now you’re going back to China to start university all over again?!”
“You heard correctly.”
Shi Zhiyu looked completely calm and straightforward.
“I’m going to Jiang University. It’ll make it easier to pursue my wife.”
Song Yan was instantly rendered speechless.
He had just been force-fed an enormous helping of romantic affection and could only shut his mouth.
He sprawled across the sofa in complete despair and sighed.
“Fine, I get it now. Looks like in the days ahead, my only job is going to be sitting around and eating dog food every single day.”
Shi Zhiyu’s lips curved faintly upward, his tone carrying a barely concealed hint of smugness.
“Good that you understand.”
Song Yan closed his eyes and silently wallowed in misery, his heart filled with countless emotions.
Who would have thought that among the two brothers who had grown up together, the one who would be the first to find happiness and settle down for good would be Shi Zhiyu—the man who had always been cold and seemingly indifferent to romance?
Meanwhile, he himself had nothing more than a reasonably good-looking face. There had never been a shortage of people trying to get close to him, yet when he thought about it carefully, not one of them had genuinely cared about him.
The few girls he had dated before had all approached him because of Shi Zhiyu’s identity and appearance.
None of them had actually liked him.
…
The next morning, nine o’clock.
Warm sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows and spilled gently into the living room, bathing the sofa in a soft glow.
Tang Shu was slowly awakened by the persistent ringing of her phone.
Her mind was still groggy and hazy, and she couldn’t even be bothered to open her eyes.
She reached blindly toward the phone beside her pillow, then answered the call with her eyes still closed.
Shi Manman’s hurried voice immediately came through the receiver.
“Shu Shu! You have a major class at ten. Don’t oversleep and forget, okay?”
Tang Shu slowly lifted her eyelids and glanced at the time on the screen.
Exactly nine o’clock.
There was still plenty of time.
Her voice was soft and slightly hoarse from just waking up as she answered quietly, “Mm, I know.”
After exchanging a few simple words, the two hung up.
Tang Shu propped herself up with one arm and slowly sat up, her consciousness gradually returning.
As she looked around at the unfamiliar, cool-toned gray-and-black interior, it suddenly hit her.
She had actually curled up on Shi Zhiyu’s apartment sofa last night…
and slept there the entire night.
She shook her head, trying to dispel the lingering sleepiness, then instinctively looked toward the cat bed in the corner of the living room.
Little Shu had already woken up.
The kitten was happily playing by itself on the floor with one of its little toys.
Its tiny paws gently batted at the teaser wand, looking lively and adorable.
Perhaps sensing its owner’s gaze, it suddenly stopped moving.
It lifted its fluffy little head and looked toward Tang Shu, letting out two soft little meows.
“Meow~”
The sound was sweet and obedient.
Tang Shu’s heart immediately softened.
She got up and walked over.
Crouching down, she gently stroked the kitten’s fluffy head and reminded it tenderly,
“Little Shu is such a good baby. Play nicely by yourself today, okay? I have to go to class in a little while. I’ll come back tonight to keep you company. You have to be a good girl. No being naughty.”
As though it understood her, Little Shu affectionately rubbed its head against her palm, acting spoiled and adorable.
Just then, her phone rang again.
The familiar three characters appeared on the screen:
God of Wealth.
Tang Shu immediately answered.
“Hello, Brother.”
Shi Zhiyu’s clear, gentle voice came through the receiver, carrying the warmth of the early morning.
“You’re awake?”
“Mm. My roommate just woke me up.”
“Did you sleep comfortably last night?”
Tang Shu turned her head and glanced at the large, soft sofa before honestly answering,
“I slept really well.”
Shi Zhiyu chuckled softly.
“That’s good. Remember to eat breakfast after you get up. I remember you have class this morning.”
“Yeah, I have class at ten.”
“Then go wash up and get ready. I won’t keep you. We’ll talk later.”
“Okay, Brother. Bye-bye~”
After hanging up, Tang Shu played with Little Shu for a while longer, petting it and keeping it company for another two minutes.
Only then did she reluctantly get up and walk toward the door, preparing to return to her own apartment to wash up and change.
But the moment she opened the door to 1801, her footsteps suddenly stopped.
She froze completely.
The elevator doors happened to slide open at that exact moment.
Two middle-aged women walked out.
They had been chatting softly as they walked.
One headed directly toward 1801.
The other walked toward 1802 across the hall.
But when they saw the suddenly opened door and Tang Shu standing there, both women froze.
Their conversation abruptly stopped as they stared at her in astonishment.
After a brief moment of stunned silence, Liu Sao, who had been walking toward 1801, was the first to react.
A familiar yet respectful smile immediately appeared on her face as she hurried over.
“Good morning, Young Madam! I’m Liu Sao. Madam sent me here today to tidy up the apartment and prepare breakfast for you.”
Tang Shu’s face instantly flushed with embarrassment.
She hurriedly waved her hands.
“Liu Sao, please don’t call me that! I’m not the Young Madam. Please, come in.”
On the other side, Zhang Ma, who had been about to enter 1802, turned around.
She stared at Tang Shu standing at the entrance of the Shi family’s apartment, her face full of confusion.
“Miss Shu Shu? Why are you in 1801? Isn’t your apartment 1802, right across the hall?”
Tang Shu opened her mouth.
For a moment, she had absolutely no idea how to explain herself.
Her fingertips curled awkwardly as she stood there, caught completely between a rock and a hard place.
Before she could come up with an explanation, Liu Sao asked in confusion,
“Xiao Zhang, how do you know our Young Madam? She’s the future Young Madam of the Shi family.”
Zhang Ma was even more bewildered.
She couldn’t help but laugh helplessly as she retorted,
“That’s exactly what I’m wondering!”
“This is our Tao family’s Miss Tang. Since when did she become your Shi family’s Young Madam?”
The two women each insisted on their own version of events.
They exchanged puzzled looks, neither understanding what was going on.
Tang Shu’s cheeks were burning bright red.
She was so embarrassed that she felt like she could dig a three-bedroom apartment out of the floor with her toes.
She hurriedly stepped in to smooth things over.
Looking at Zhang Ma, she said softly,
“Zhang Ma, please go inside and start tidying up. I’ll come over in a little while.”
Although Zhang Ma was still full of questions, she had always been obedient.
She nodded.
“Okay, Miss Shu Shu. I’ll go get started.”
With that, Zhang Ma walked into 1802.
