A group of thugs gathered in the bar, watching the crowd swaying wildly below the stage. Some looked disdainful, while others joined in, feeling smug.
As night fell, human desires were laid bare.
Hu Laosan was holding a scantily clad, heavily made-up beauty, drinking and enjoying himself.
“Don’t know. No idea which river he swam over from.”
He lit a cigar and took a leisurely puff. Amid the flashing lights and swirling smoke, Hu Laosan felt immensely pleased as he took in the scene.
This was his livelihood. This was his kingdom.
“But Young Master Jiang wants us to investigate his background. Should we still go?”
“Are you stupid? Of course we should, but we don’t have to be quick about it!”
“Boss, is there a catch?”
Hu Laosan chuckled at this. This was exactly why he, Hu Laosan, was the boss instead of some street thug.
“Let me ask you, between offending a dragon crossing the river and a local snake, which would you choose?”
“Your subordinate is foolish. Please enlighten me, boss.”
Hu Laosan narrowed his eyes, gazing dreamily at the dancers on stage and the raucous crowd below.
“What we’re going to do is offend neither!”
“But… aren’t you afraid of Young Master Jiang’s wrath?”
Hu Laosan stared at his trusted subordinate with a strange look, then swung his ham-sized fist and knocked him on the head.
“Are you my man, or his?”
Hu Laosan looked at his subordinate, who wore a pitiful, wronged expression, and thought better of it. After all, he had chosen this guy precisely because he wasn’t too bright.
He waved his hand and explained, looking annoyed: “The world isn’t all about fighting and killing. Understanding people and knowing how to play the game, that’s what keeps us alive.”
“When you don’t know exactly who someone is, don’t be too quick to offend them.”
“But Young Master Jiang is the biggest local snake here!”
The biggest local snake… Hu Laosan sneered. A rich brat who lived off his father’s leftovers. What was there to fear about him?
Besides, how could Jiang Yiran possibly be the next heir of the Jiang family?
He was just a target put out front. The prestigious Jiang family wouldn’t have only one child.
And a local snake was just a local snake. When it came down to it, it was nothing that could stand on the big stage.
But compared to himself, Hu Laosan, it was still a behemoth, which was why he had to play the obedient grandson to Jiang Yiran.
“You don’t need to worry about that. I know what I’m doing. All you have to do is listen to me.”
The more he thought about it, the more irritated he became. Hu Laosan lost all interest in answering his subordinate’s questions and waved his hand to shoo him away.
Boom, boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom, boom, boom!
Hu Laosan was in the private room, playing around with the beauty, when he heard the increasingly loud banging. He yelled out in annoyance.
“Which ungrateful little punk dares to knock on my door?”
Boom, boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom, boom, boom!
The person outside didn’t answer, just kept pounding on the door with even more force.
“Once I open this door, I’ll show you the meaning of regret!”
Hu Ye cursed under his breath as he threw on his clothes, then opened the door with a look of displeasure.
“So you’re Hu Ye, right?”
The moment the door opened, he saw a male high school student in a school uniform, smiling at him. There was no fear in his eyes at the sight of the tattooed, burly man. He looked like he was observing something amusing.
“You’ve got some nerve, kid!”
Seeing that look, Hu Ye felt the humiliation he’d known back when he was just a small-time thug, looked down on by everyone.
“Today I’m going to show you what it means to get a beating from society!”
His anger flared instantly. Hu Laosan, furious, threw a punch that would have put any normal person in bed for six months.
“Block him for me.”
Then, to his shock, Hu Ye watched as his loyal subordinate, who had followed him for years, unhesitatingly stepped in to block the blow meant for the young man.
“You ungrateful traitor! Are you betraying me?”
“Wow, that punch was really heavy. You sure don’t go easy on your own men.”
Lu Renjia poked the subordinate’s swollen cheek and sighed about how cruel the world was.
“Who the hell are you? How are you able to command my subordinate?”
Relying on his years of street experience, Hu Laosan immediately sensed something strange about the young man before him.
“Weren’t you looking for me? So I came to you.”
Lu Renjia snapped his fingers, and the noisy bar fell silent in an instant. The entire place was dead quiet.
“Who the hell are you?”
Hu Laosan had never seen anything like this. His scalp tingled and his legs trembled uncontrollably as he stammered the question.
“Why do you people always ask the same question?”
Lu Renjia found a clean spot and lounged comfortably on the sofa.
“I’m just an ordinary high school student passing through.”
“Is that answer satisfactory?” Lu Renjia smiled as he looked at Hu Laosan, who was nearly scared into a little kitten.
“S… should I be satisfied?”
Faced with such inhuman power, Hu Laosan had no choice but to bow his head in surrender and smile bitterly as he responded to the young master before him.
“Come here.”
Hu Laosan looked up and instantly saw Lu Renjia’s pink-gold glowing eyes. His whole body felt like it was no longer under his control.
“Look into my eyes and answer my questions.”
“Yes…”
Hu Laosan couldn’t control his own body and could only answer each question mechanically, like a puppet.
“Alright, I suppose that’s enough. Sorry for the trouble.”
Lu Renjia snapped his fingers again, and the dance floor, which had just been silent, returned to its former noise.
“Boss, why does my face hurt so much?”
The subordinate woke up groggily from the corner and was startled to see that a high school boy in a school uniform had entered the private room.
In his eyes, the boy was sitting on the back of the sofa with his legs crossed, while his boss stood before him, looking perfectly respectful.
“Shut up. This is Mr. Lu. Come here and kneel!”
Lu Renjia waved his hand dismissively: “Now, now, Xiao San’er. We’re not stuck in feudal times. Why would we kneel in this new age?”
“Just have him crawl over here.”
The young man’s mischievous voice echoed through the room. The subordinate looked at his boss in confusion.
“Crawl here now! Unless you want Mr. Lu to get angry and you won’t be leaving here alive today.”
Seeing that Hu Laosan’s subordinate wasn’t moving, Lu Renjia smiled and waved his hand: “You’re supposed to be the boss. Don’t be so hard on your own man!”
“Y…”
Before he could finish, a massive force struck him square in the face. His face swelled up just like his subordinate’s.
“A boss has a duty to take punishment for his subordinates. Don’t you think?”
“Mm!”
Hu Laosan answered hurriedly, his words muffled, afraid of drawing another slap.
“Now, take me to your Young Master Jiang, will you?”
……
“I heard Young Master Jiang met a rare beauty today, but she got away. What a shame!”
The scene was one of flashing lights and clinking glasses. Young Master Jiang and his circle of friends were enjoying the show on stage.
“Hmph, it was that woman who didn’t know what was good for her. It’s hardly Young Master Jiang’s fault.”
“Right, right, right. I misspoke. I’ll punish myself with three drinks.”
“Haha, you just want to drink that fine wine. Making up all those excuses just to get a sip.”
Jiang Yiran smiled as he watched the scene. To him, this was just another unremarkable evening in a life of extreme luxury.
But thinking of Bai Luomeng, whom he’d met today, made his heart race.
It had been a long time since he’d felt this way. He had to have that woman.
Jiang Yiran was very confident of that.
Boom, boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom, boom, boom!
Hearing the pounding, his friends knew it must be something important for Young Master Jiang, so they rushed to open the door.
“Who is it!”
“Hello.” Lu Renjia held up his pizza, munching as he smiled: “Your delivery is here.”
