Chapter 32: The Warning and the Uninvited Sister

“I believe I made myself clear.”

“……”

“That I intend to raise my daughter properly and marry her off.”

“I am aware.”

“You two were close, so I assigned you as her guard… but that didn’t mean you should sleep together.”

‘Did he find out about last night in the garden?’

Gyesa bit down on his tongue.

Then he spoke slowly, in a calm voice.

“We have never done such a thing.”

“Then Deokchun must have lied?”

“It was probably a misunderstanding.”

“So you did meet?”

“Yes.”

At Gyesa’s firm reply, Jipyeong let out a hollow laugh.

“But there was nothing for you to worry about, sir. I only…”

“Only?”

“I merely warned the young lady.”

“What?”

“I only told her that things can no longer be the same as before. Nothing more, nothing less.”

After his words, silence filled the car.

Jipyeong looked at Gyesa’s composed face and thought—

‘Brazen, bold… and a reckless brat.’

Still, he seemed promising.

Feigning sternness, Jipyeong scolded him.

“You dared to warn the young lady you serve? How insolent.”

“My apologies.”

“That’s enough. Be careful from now on.”

“Yes.”

Looking out the window, Jipyeong muttered in a low, ominous voice.

“As you just saw… I truly hate traitors.”

“Yes.”

“Those men earlier were siphoning money behind my back. Did they think they wouldn’t get caught? Fools.”

How much money could those now-cold corpses have even stolen?

Yet Jipyeong had made them pay with their lives.

And he had shown it deliberately—as a warning.

‘Do not touch my daughter, who must be sold without a single blemish.’

Gyesa listened quietly before speaking.

“I have no reason to be treated like those idiots.”

“…Insolent brat.”

Jipyeong clicked his tongue and tapped the front seat with his foot.

“Head straight to the estate.”

“Yes.”

Watching the polished shoes, Gyesa thought—

As expected, Lee Jipyeong is a dangerous man.

He swallowed a sigh.

‘Aedong… how can you be so fearless?’

He couldn’t leave her in such a dangerous place.

He had to get her out as soon as possible.

If he could just find out what was being used as collateral to keep her here, then…

Gyesa concealed his thoughts as deep as an abyss, wary of the wolf-like man beside him.

Aside from having blood drawn, there was nothing for me to do in the estate.

So it was strange for the top floor of the annex—where no one came except Ham-an-daek and the doctor—to be this noisy.

“Miss, you mustn’t!”

“She’s my sister, right? Why can’t I see her?”

The voices grew clearer as they approached.

The one trying to stop her seemed to be Ham-an-daek, while the sharp voice belonged to someone I had never heard before.

Before I could make sense of it, the door burst open.

“My lady!”

A young girl in a yellow dress stood there confidently.

Behind her, Ham-an-daek fumbled helplessly.

“What is this?”

The girl looked at my startled face and spoke bluntly.

“You don’t look alike at all. And you’re more plain than I expected.”

“Miss Eunjo!”

Judging by the way she was addressed, she must be the half-sister my father had mentioned.

But why would someone like her come all the way to the annex to see me?

She raised one eyebrow at me.

“What, are you mute? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

She pouted slightly.

Her glossy black bob swayed neatly around her chin.

With pale skin and a natural blush on her cheeks, she looked every bit like a refined young lady.

But her words were utterly rude.

“What exactly am I supposed to say to someone who barges in unannounced?”

At my firm reply, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Miss Eunjo, please stop and go back. If the master finds out, there will be trouble.”

“If you just keep quiet, no one will know! Why are you being so annoying?”

Eunjo was clearly raised in luxury.

It wasn’t just her appearance—it was her confidence.

People who grew up being beaten could never hold their heads that high.

That was why Gyesa had always seemed both remarkable and strange.

Though her sudden intrusion annoyed me, her boldness was almost astonishing.

“You’re the sister I supposedly lost?”

She pushed past Ham-an-daek and approached me.

She must have imagined me weak and sickly, but I seemed far healthier than she expected.

“If you are truly the daughter of this house… then I suppose I am.”

“Hm. So you really are my sister.”

Without hesitation, she plopped down on my bed and examined my face.

As if people were exhibits to be viewed for free.

At the circus, she would’ve been charged for that.

“Well, I’m disappointed. I thought I’d be getting a sister, but you’re so shabby.”

What was I supposed to say to someone insulting me to my face?

“Should I apologize?”

At my cold tone, Eunjo twitched her cheek.

“Hmph. At least you have some pride.”

Talking to her any longer was exhausting.

But she seemed to be enjoying herself.

Clapping her hands, she chirped—

“Alright! This might be fun in its own way. What’s your name?”

I just wanted to end this conversation.

After a sigh, I answered.

“Aedong.”

“That’s a strange name. I’m Eunjo. Lee Eunjo. So you’re Lee Aedong now.”

I had no interest in introducing myself further.

When I turned away, she grabbed my arm.

“Come on. I heard you’ve been cooped up in this room ever since you arrived.”

I frowned at her forcefulness.

“What does that have to do with you? Please stop being rude.”

She blinked, then burst out laughing.

“Well, a shabby little sparrow like you showed up. Maybe not a sister, but you can at least be a playmate. Let’s go.”

Her stubbornness left me speechless.

Why was everyone in this house so self-willed?

Even if she was younger than me, she looked at least fifteen.

Yet she was completely childish.

I glanced at Ham-an-daek, who gestured desperately for me to go along with it.

A sigh escaped me.

Even a cold father like him seemed to cherish his daughter dearly.

That explained her behavior.

And judging by Ham-an-daek’s signal, I had no power to resist in this place.

Reluctantly, I stood up.

Eunjo pulled my arm impatiently, causing me to limp slightly.

She tilted her head.

“What’s wrong with your leg?”

She truly had no sense of manners.

Or perhaps she simply didn’t think someone like me deserved any.

“My right leg is weak. So please don’t pull me like that. I might accidentally knock you over.”

Despite my sharp tone, she didn’t care.

“Oh, I see. It’s fine. You’re so small and skinny—I can handle one girl like you.”

Her words hurt my pride.

Even if she was about my height, she was younger than me.

And I had no intention of relying on her.

After all, I had handled all kinds of work at the circus.

“That’s enough. I’ll walk myself, so stop pulling me.”

“Suit yourself.”

As expected, she didn’t care at all.

At this point, I was the one getting drained.

Sighing deeply, I noticed even Ham-an-daek looked exhausted.

It was clear now.

At least in this annex, there was no one who could win against this young lady.
