Chapter 66: Aftermath and a Familiar Hospital

Five minutes after Liu Xingluo had dispatched the three Superhuman criminals, the government-assigned Superhumans and other personnel tasked with the arrests finally arrived, conspicuously behind schedule.

“What? It’s already been handled,” Jin Yuan grumbled. “Seriously, what are those higher-ups thinking? If there was already a Superhuman on site, they shouldn’t have called me out. I’m a busy man, you know.”

Having been apprised of the situation, Jin Yuan discontentedly lit a cigarette, his frustration palpable.

His days were already consumed by life-and-death battles against Evolved Beasts, yet he was still expected to carve out time to subdue these Superhuman criminals.

To arrive at the scene only to discover that another Superhuman had already coincidentally taken care of everything felt like a complete waste of his precious time.

It was only natural for him to feel irked, as if he had been made a fool of.

Nevertheless, his annoyance notwithstanding, duty called.

He still had to oversee the apprehension of these Superhuman criminals and ensure their safe transport to a detention facility.

Furthermore, Jin Yuan finally laid eyes on Liu Xingluo, the Superhuman who had resolved the incident.

He was quite taken aback to learn that Liu Xingluo was merely a rookie Superhuman, considering she had single-handedly confronted three individuals, all possessing superpowers, even if untrained.

Subduing such a trio without considerable power would have been an impossible feat.

This was precisely why the government had dispatched an A-rank Superhuman like himself to the scene.

Yet, Liu Xingluo, a freshly inducted recruit without even an official rank, had effortlessly subdued all three.

It was clear this newcomer possessed formidable strength.

“Speaking of which,” Jin Yuan mused, “did you happen to be on a bus the morning before last? The one that plunged into a pit dug by an Evolved Beast?”

As he scrutinized Liu Xingluo’s appearance, a memory suddenly surfaced in Jin Yuan’s mind—an incident from two days prior that he had been assigned.

He had arrived at that particular scene only to find the situation already contained.

According to the witnesses, a white-haired girl had valiantly battled an Evolved Beast, saving everyone.

However, since no white-haired girl was among the confirmed survivors, the investigation had stalled, leaving the matter unresolved.

Now, seeing Liu Xingluo’s distinctive white hair, Jin Yuan suddenly connected the dots and decided to simply ask.

“Ah, yes,” Liu Xingluo affirmed. “That was actually my very first day heading to the company for work, and I ran right into that predicament.

I happened to awaken my Superpowers right then, which is how I managed to escape.”

Liu Xingluo readily confirmed her presence on that ill-fated bus.

It marked the genesis of her transformation.

“I see,” Jin Yuan nodded. “Your strength appears considerable.

However, reaching an A-rank level like mine is still a long way off for you, junior.

Keep pushing yourself.”

“I’ll be taking my leave now.

Oh, and don’t fret about compensation for the damages.

The higher-ups will have someone handle it; you won’t be footing the bill.”

“They certainly won’t make you pay out of your own pocket.”

During her skirmish with the criminals, Liu Xingluo had inevitably caused a degree of environmental damage, and such destruction naturally required accountability.

Fearing that Liu Xingluo, as a fresh recruit, might be unaware of this protocol, Jin Yuan made a point to reassure her that this minor issue was not her concern.

Superhumans, after all, engaged in a perilous profession, constantly battling Evolved Beasts.

In such confrontations, collateral damage to the surroundings was an unavoidable reality.

It would be utterly unreasonable to hold them accountable for every loss incurred during combat.

Hence, a specialized department existed solely to manage the aftermath of such devastating battles.

“Ah, understood,” Liu Xingluo replied. “Thank you for the reminder, Senior.

I’ll strive to catch up to your level.”

“Oh, quite the spirit, aren’t you?” Jin Yuan chuckled. “Well then, work hard and try to survive long enough to actually catch up to me.”

While enthusiasm was commendable, battling Evolved Beasts demanded more than just passion; it hinged on a precarious balance of sheer luck and formidable strength.

Although humanity held the overall advantage in the ongoing conflict with Evolved Beasts, Jin Yuan, an A-rank Superhuman himself, was acutely aware of the countless Superhuman lives lost in these brutal encounters.

Nevertheless, given Liu Xingluo’s evident prowess in single-handedly dispatching three opponents with such ease, he surmised her chances of surviving long enough to reach his level were quite high.

Only after Jin Yuan had departed did Liu Xingluo finally allow herself to exhale, a deep sigh of relief escaping her lips.

It was a profound relief that she wouldn’t have to concern herself with compensation.

Her existing six-million-yuan debt remained unpaid; incurring new liabilities on top of that would surely spell the absolute end of her life.

It would be a complete and utter ruin, both as a woman and as a human being.

“Sister, how is your leg holding up?” Liu Xingluo asked, her gaze now returning to Liu Ruyan. “Let me take you to the hospital.”

Having concluded matters on her end, Liu Xingluo refocused her attention on Liu Ruyan’s injured leg.

Despite having rinsed the wound with water, it desperately needed proper dressing.

Liu Xingluo resolved to take her sister to the hospital for thorough treatment.

“It still aches a little,” Liu Ruyan admitted, “but I should be able to walk.

There’s no need for a hospital, is there? It’s just a minor scratch.

I’m sure I’ll recover fine if I just go home and rest in bed for a while.”

Liu Ruyan cautiously moved her injured leg.

While walking was technically possible, her pace would be significantly slower, and each step sent jolts of pain through her, causing her to wince involuntarily.

“No, don’t push yourself, Sister,” Liu Xingluo insisted. “I’ll carry you to the hospital.”

Her sister was clearly displaying such an agonizing expression, yet she still intended to simply rest at home?

Liu Xingluo would hear none of it.

With an injured leg, how could they possibly forgo a proper examination at the hospital?

Resting at home risked leaving behind unforeseen complications, which would be far more troublesome in the long run.

“Alright,” Liu Ruyan conceded. “Then I’ll trouble you, Xiaoluo, to take me to the hospital.”

Knowing that Liu Xingluo would insist on taking her to the hospital regardless of her refusal, and considering the pain Liu Ruyan felt with just two steps, she realized she had no real power to object.

Thus, Liu Ruyan yielded to her sister’s wishes, allowing Liu Xingluo to escort her to the hospital.

“Oh, please, ‘trouble’?” Liu Xingluo scoffed lightheartedly. “Compared to everything you’ve done for me in the past, Sister, this is absolutely nothing.”

“So, Sister, could you please navigate us to the nearest hospital?”

“Alright.

Let me just check… oh!”

“What is it?”

“Look,” Liu Ruyan exclaimed, “this hospital is the very same one you were admitted to last time, Xiaoluo!”

“No way, seriously?” Liu Xingluo responded, genuinely surprised. “Do we really have such an uncanny connection with that hospital?”

Neither of them had ever stepped foot in that hospital before, yet within a mere three days, they had both found themselves there, one after the other.

Truly, some twists of fate, once they arrive, are utterly inescapable.

Though, admittedly, having a ‘fateful connection’ with a hospital was hardly a cause for celebration.

“Sister, I’ll need you to be my personal navigator,” Liu Xingluo declared. “Off we go!”

Slinging Liu Ruyan onto her back, Liu Xingluo immediately broke into a full sprint towards the hospital.

Given her newfound speed and prodigious leaping ability, arriving at the hospital faster than any vehicle was a foregone conclusion.

Still, she couldn’t help but notice, why did the wind feel so strangely cold?

It was, after all, still the height of summer.
