“Oh right, look at me—I completely forgot that my poor little baby has amnesia. Tsk tsk tsk, truly pitiful, truly pitiful.”
Maybe because the work was done? Morin switched back to her awkward translator’s tone, with dramatic intonation as if she were praising or lamenting Dio.
All nonsense.
“So?”
Jiang Cha tilted her head, blinking her big eyes impatiently, interrupting Morin’s chant.
“So, little girl, if you have time, go find that old hag in the principal’s office yourself. I don’t know anything about this either!”
This time Morin spoke with a Northeastern accent. Jiang Cha was increasingly convinced that Morin was a little bit crazy.
With these symptoms, she’d probably be sentenced to life in a mental hospital.
“Mm.”
Though Jiang Cha had already sentenced this woman to life imprisonment in her mind, in reality she just lowered her head looking a bit downcast, her voice a mix of grievance and quiet strength, paired with her adorable face that softened Morin’s heart.
“Oh~ my pitiful little baby, please don’t show such a heartbreaking expression. That old hag, the principal, is just loafing around in her office. You can find her anytime. Now, let’s continue testing so we can finish early and get off work.”
This time Morin’s voice was a blend of translator’s tone mixed with the vibe of a slacking corporate drone. Tea Baby was really curious what tricks this woman might pull next.
“I got it, Sister Morin.”
Jiang Cha nodded obediently but clearly looked low in spirits, completely drained of energy.
“Alright~! Now you walk left, there’s a door there. Go inside and we’ll start testing what kind of innate magic you have.”
Morin, called “Sister,” looked very pleased, her tone softening considerably.
…
Compared to the simplicity of the mana test, the innate magic test was much more difficult.
Jiang Cha only learned here that innate magic was divided into categories: shaping, knowledge, mystery, and force types, each with different characteristics.
But these traits only exist in essence and only affect the activation conditions and development paths. They don’t impact the actual ability’s performance at all.
In other words, if a witch casts a fireball spell, she might be shaping type or mystery type; even the power could be the same. But they’re different magic types. After two development stages, the shaping type usually evolves into something like the Five Fireball Church, favoring rapid-fire and quantity-is-best doctrine.
The mystery type might develop into a traditional “forbidden spell” style big ultimate move.
Which is better or worse has no fixed answer; it all depends on the witch’s development direction.
But Jiang Cha’s magic wasn’t something that could be judged by appearances.
The superhuman skill to control every inch of her muscles was only a byproduct of her power; her powerful physical constitution came from her deep mana reserves.
After a series of complicated tests, Morin was shocked to discover that Jiang Cha’s innate magic was actually a solidified magic.
Yeah… she really wasn’t speaking tongue-twisters.
“Your innate magic is a bit vague in classification, but it should basically be a type of mystery magic, formally called ‘Information Gathering.’ Witches usually call it ‘Last-minute cramming.’”
After putting Jiang Cha into a weird machine resembling a CT scanner but radiating magical energy, Morin, like a doctor holding a printed report, said seriously:
“This magic is widely used but rarely deeply studied. So I can’t give you much advice. Basically, it’s just a minor spell that improves learning efficiency, commonly used by young witches to cram for exams.”
‘So that’s why it’s called “Last-minute cramming”… pretty straightforward.’
Jiang Cha stood up, obediently buttoning her shirt.
“It has an advanced version developed by the principal a hundred years ago, which greatly improves information-gathering efficiency, and to some extent achieves your current brain-enhancing effect.”
“But its mana consumption also became terrifyingly high. The five-tier mana upgrade is instantaneous, making it a nine-ring magic spell. Even powerful Grand Witches can only use it for twenty-four hours straight, after which there’s a risk of complete mana depletion. Its activation materials are bizarre and incredibly hard to find. To put it in terms you might understand now,”
“This magic is considered by witches as a high-potential but difficult-to-apply, even more difficult-to-develop, ‘triple high’ project. Only witches with tons of money to burn would research it — like our idiot principal.”
After learning about Jiang Cha’s innate magic, Morin stopped worrying if all this new witch knowledge would mentally overwhelm Jiang Cha into a vegetative state and switched to a report-like mode, talking non-stop.
‘My head feels… a bit dizzy?’
The girl rubbed her temples, trying to focus and understand the information Morin was explaining.
“But a ‘triple high’ project becoming an innate magic usually means huge potential. Especially since your innate magic’s refinement far exceeds the principal’s incomplete version, making it a permanent solidified magic. Its mana consumption per ring cycle fluctuates around 500, which is negligible compared to your over 60,000 mana—it’s even less than automatic recovery.”
The “ring cycle” is a magic unit indicating the shortest time for mana to complete a cycle in a spell model, commonly used in solidified magic because their ring cycles are fixed.
Jiang Cha’s magic cycle is 2.31 seconds.
This means it consumes 214 mana units per second on average, which is forbidden-level for solidified magic. Ordinary witches wouldn’t dare use it; it would drain their mana to death in days. Only Grand Witches can maintain it.
“However, currently this magic barely improves your abilities except developing your brain to an incomprehensible level. If it doesn’t increase combat power even after a second stage, our research institute would gladly welcome you, genius, to join.”
“I’ll apply for a high salary for you.”
Morin sighed. The academy’s battle witch teams were desperately understaffed, working overtime like 007 agents. The Rift was active, popping up worldwide nonstop, and monsters were always causing trouble. Having a newbie with Grand Witch-level mana like Jiang Cha would definitely make the academy a top power in the coming years.
But sadly…
‘This Grand Witch is still a practically useless adorable baby in combat…’
Seeing Jiang Cha in a semi-dazed state babbling after absorbing so much witch knowledge, Morin smiled happily.
She’d seen many little witches like this before; no need to worry—she’d recover soon, well, “soon.”
“Learning witch knowledge does come with a price, my cute and pitiful little baby~”
Morin reached out and gently rubbed Jiang Cha’s cheek, patient like a seasoned hunter.
“There’s still plenty of time. What fun shall we have this time?”
