Join the ServerThe crazed question echoed across the empty square, laced with bloodlust and venom.
Kneeling on the cold ground, Su Qinghan found his impassioned speech utterly laughable.
A faint scoff escaped her lips.
“Spare me your noble act.”
Though her voice was quiet, it carried with startling clarity to the demonic figure hovering mid-air.
“Everything you’ve done has been for nothing more than to satisfy your own pathetic desires.”
“All this talk of acting for the world’s scholars, of fighting for a just world… it’s nothing but a tantrum because your career failed, a petty rage directed at the world.”
“You are truly… a pathetic waste.”
Suspended in the air, Wu Que’s completely mutated head slowly swiveled toward her.
His eyes, two pools of pure darkness, locked onto the slender white figure below.
“Irksome.”
The word escaped his lips like grinding gravel.
Without any extraneous movement, he gave a casual wave of his hand.
A silent, blood-red blade of condensed qi tore through the air, hurtling toward Su Qinghan’s neck.
Su Qinghan tried to dodge.
But her legs, having only just regained sensation, had once again become dead weights, utterly unresponsive to her will.
All she could do was watch, helpless, as the crimson line of death expanded rapidly before her.
There was no escape.
Just then, a figure moved with fierce determination, placing herself directly in Su Qinghan’s path.
It was Liu Ruyan!
“Crack!!”
An ear-splitting crack!
The standard-issue longsword in Liu Ruyan’s hand shattered from the middle the instant it met the crimson qi blade.
The irresistible force of the impact traveled up the broken blade and slammed into her with its full might.
“Pfft!”
As if struck by a battering ram, Liu Ruyan was sent flying, her body carving a parabola through the air before crashing heavily into a distant, dilapidated courtyard wall.
The wall crumbled, burying her beneath the rubble.
Her fate was unknown.
Watching this unfold, Su Qinghan felt as if an invisible hand had seized her heart.
A direct confrontation was hopeless.
This man was no longer human.
He was a monster, an amalgamation of infinite resentment and a thousand malevolent spirits.
A walking powder keg.
If she couldn’t break the keg, then she had to… find a way to light a fire within it!
A monster driven mad would be far easier to handle than one with intelligence.
Without further hesitation, she endured the searing pain that felt as if her body were falling apart and fumbled inside her wide sleeve.
Soon, she produced several small, elegant white candles and set them before her.
Next, she drew out a small, palm-sized peach-wood sword intricately carved with complex runes.
This was her last resort.
The Three Powers Evil-Purging Curse!
It was the only technique she could think of that could bypass the physical body to strike the spirit within.
But her spiritual energy was completely depleted; even Jiu Li had fallen into a deep slumber.
Without spiritual energy, she couldn’t cast a spell, let alone light the candles.
Gritting her teeth, Su Qinghan reached into another pocket and pulled out a few grains of hard, dried glutinous rice.
She carried it for emergencies, a means to light the candles and restore a sliver of spiritual energy.
Now, it was her only hope.
She placed the rice in her palm and, with the last of her strength, ground it fiercely between her hands.
“Puff!”
A faint, almost invisible wisp of green smoke drifted up from between her fingers.
She carefully guided this minuscule wisp of power, converted from the essence of the glutinous rice, into the three candles before her.
“Hum.”
Three pea-sized flames flickered to life, trembling precariously.
A faint warmth flowed back into her through some mystical connection, allowing her nearly shattered spirit to cohere once more.
Now!
Su Qinghan’s hands formed a seal.
She held the peach-wood sword in her left hand, while the fingers of her right formed a sword signet, touching it to her brow before pointing sharply at Wu Que in the sky.
Her lips moved in a rapid blur as ancient, difficult syllables spilled forth.
“By the Supreme Mandate, I am commanded to act!”
“With peach wood as my blade, I shall sunder evil and purify the soul!”
“In accordance with the statutes, execute with haste!”
As the final syllable fell, the small peach-wood sword in her hand erupted with a soft, yet inviolable, yellow light.
“Go!”
The peach-wood sword shot from her hand, transforming into a streak of light.
It made no sound as it sliced through the air, yet it moved with incomprehensible speed, instantly embedding itself in Wu Que’s massive, twisted form.
Time seemed to stand still at this moment.
In the next instant.
“Roar—!!!”
A bloodcurdling roar, utterly inhuman, erupted from within Wu Que’s body.
It was not his voice, but the collective shriek of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of malevolent spirits—a soul-rending chorus of agony.
The yellow light that had pierced his body was like a ladle of cold water thrown into a vat of boiling oil.
Beneath his translucent skin, stretched taut by countless tendrils of black qi, innumerable ghostly forms began to rampage—colliding, tearing, and devouring one another in a frenzy.
The excruciating agony sent his swollen, inhuman form into violent convulsions.
He snapped his head down, his eyes—two pools of burning, venomous darkness—locking onto Su Qinghan.
“You again, you fiend!!”
“Die!!”
Consumed by rage, he unleashed a blade of crimson qi—thicker, more violent than before—that descended with the force to annihilate everything in its path.
Su Qinghan was already prepared.
The instant the peach-wood sword left her hand, she had already formed a new seal, drawing her very last talisman from her sleeve.
Without hesitation, she pressed the talisman to the ground.
The three candle flames erupted, engulfing the paper in a furious blaze.
She forced a single word from her throat with all her might.
“Shield!”
“Hum!”
A circular array of countless golden runes instantly materialized before her, radiating a solemn, powerful aura.
“Boom!!”
The crimson qi blade and the golden array collided with brutal force.
There was no stalemate.
Contact lasted but an instant.
The seemingly indestructible runic array shattered like brittle glass, exploding into a shower of golden light.
The aftershock of the qi blade slammed into Su Qinghan.
She felt as if she had been struck head-on by a speeding mountain.
Her body was flung backward once more, crashing through the wall of a nearby house before she was lost in a shower of brick and rubble, her consciousness fading completely.
The world fell into darkness.
Just as Su Qinghan’s figure vanished into the dust and smoke…
A crimson figure, moving at incredible speed, tore across the square from the opposite side, trailing a wave of scorching heat and overwhelming killing intent.
Lu Hongzhuang arrived just in time to witness this very scene.
She saw the demonic figure send the white silhouette flying with a single strike.
She saw the white silhouette crash through a wall and disappear under the rubble, followed by a deathly silence.
In that instant, Lu Hongzhuang’s mind went completely blank, a deafening roar filling her ears.
It felt as if something precious deep inside her had just shattered.
An unprecedented rage, mingled with a panic and anguish she couldn’t comprehend, erupted from the very depths of her soul.
“Su Qinghan!!”
She let out a bloodcurdling scream, and the longsword in her hand sang with a high-pitched cry.
She became a crimson blur, charging recklessly toward the twisted monster in the sky.
Wu Que, already tormented by the spirits rampaging within him, never expected an attack at this moment.
He hastily raised his sword to parry.
“Clang—!!!”
The clang of metal on metal echoed through the night sky.
Unexpectedly.
The demonic, blood-colored figure was actually sent staggering backward by the force of her furious strike.
The internal turmoil caused by the spirits prevented him from mustering his full strength, allowing Lu Hongzhuang’s desperate, all-or-nothing attack to overwhelm him for a brief, crucial moment.
