Join the ServerA mental eye-roll was Su Qinghan’s silent retort.
“I’m not some honey badger, ready to fight the moment my eyes open.”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Jiu Li’s voice dripped with perfunctory agreement. “You are the greatest lover of peace, so much so that you nearly dismantled Bluestone Town.”
Su Qinghan found herself disinclined to bicker with her.
Outside, Lu Hongzhuang stood fully dressed, her vibrant red martial attire lending her an air of heroic prowess.
“Allow me to see you out.” She moved to the wheelchair’s side, her hand naturally closing around its push handles.
The moment they opened the door, they found themselves face-to-face with Master Qian’s family, who were just then preparing to depart.
Upon seeing the two women, Master Qian’s face instantly creased into a wide smile. “Are the two lady heroes heading out for some early morning strolls?”
His wife and daughter, standing beside him, likewise offered respectful greetings, their demeanor both deferential and amiable.
Lu Hongzhuang offered a brief affirmation. “Indeed, we have a few matters to attend to outside.”
Following a brief, polite exchange, Master Qian enthusiastically instructed his servants to guide them, seeing them all the way out of the Qian Manor gates.
The moment they stepped beyond the manor gates, Lu Hongzhuang declared, “I’m off to the Demon Exorcism Division to exchange my waist token; as for you…”
“We shall operate separately.” Su Qinghan waved a dismissive hand, then, maneuvering the wheels of her wheelchair herself, slowly guided it towards a different street.
Lu Hongzhuang watched Su Qinghan’s slender yet resolutely independent figure, her lips parting as if to speak, but ultimately, she uttered nothing, simply turning to walk in the direction of the Demon Exorcism Division.
Su Qinghan, alone, expertly navigated her specially crafted wheelchair, moving leisurely along the bluestone paved streets of Wangyue Town.
In stark contrast to the tranquil simplicity of Bluestone Town, Wangyue Town was markedly more bustling and vibrant.
Along the streets, martial artists, armed with sabers and swords, hurried past, their hurried steps a common sight. Most exuded an unmistakable aura of blood and battle, their eyes watchful and their strides swift, clearly hardened warriors accustomed to living on the edge of a blade.
The very air, too, held a significantly higher concentration of demonic energy than that of Bluestone Town.
‘Jiu Li, it’s time to begin.’ Su Qinghan mused silently.
“Alright, alright, you capitalist!” Jiu Li responded with a lazy drawl, then began to circulate her demon soul, slowly drawing in the surrounding chaotic demonic energy. This she transformed into pure spiritual power, which she then transferred to Su Qinghan.
A faint yet exquisitely pure warm current gently coursed through her extraordinary meridians, subtly nurturing her frail body.
Su Qinghan narrowed her eyes in contentment, then continued her journey forward.
Suddenly, ahead of her, she noticed a large crowd gathered beneath a wall, all pointing and murmuring amongst themselves.
Her innate curiosity, a part of her very being, compelled her to maneuver her wheelchair closer to the commotion.
The crowd, recognizing her as a “disabled person,” instinctively parted, creating a path for her.
Affixed to the wall was an enormous notice: a bounty order issued by the Demon Exorcism Division.
“Bounty: All manner of demonic creatures. One hundred taels of silver for live capture; fifty taels for providing a corpse.”
Su Qinghan gazed at the bounty notice, letting out a soft sigh as she murmured to herself.
“With this, even those demons who cultivate peacefully and abide by their own ways will inevitably be implicated…”
Her voice was barely a whisper, yet it was distinctly heard by a burly man nearby, who was shouldering a formidable ghost-head saber.
Upon hearing her words, the burly man immediately pivoted, his eyes, wide as copper bells, fixing her with a stare.
“Little girl, your words are quite mistaken!”
His booming voice instantly seized the attention of everyone in the vicinity.
“A demon is a demon! What ‘good’ could possibly exist among them? If they haven’t harmed anyone, it’s simply because they haven’t yet felt hunger! Are we to refrain from killing them, only to wait until they decide to devour us?”
“Precisely!” someone nearby immediately chimed in. “My third uncle was devoured by a passing snake demon! These vile creatures, every last one of them, deserve to be slain!”
“Eradicate them root and branch! Leave not a single one alive!”
The crowd grew agitated, and a multitude of gazes, brimming with both confusion and hostility, settled upon Su Qinghan.
Su Qinghan remained silent.
She observed these indignant martial artists, the hatred etched upon their faces undeniably raw and profound.
She understood the futility of engaging them in such a debate.
Those whose paths diverge cannot conspire together.
Su Qinghan silently maneuvered her wheelchair, withdrawing from the throng of people.
She had barely turned a street corner when she saw Lu Hongzhuang approaching her.
Yet, the Lu Hongzhuang before her now bore none of the morning’s vivacity; she appeared utterly dejected, an intractable gloom clouding her brow.
“What troubles you?” Su Qinghan halted her wheelchair.
Lu Hongzhuang lifted her gaze to meet Su Qinghan’s, her lips moving to speak, her voice emerging somewhat parched.
“The seven villages surrounding Wangyue Town… they were all massacred.”
Su Qinghan’s movements ceased abruptly.
“Not a single soul remained.” Lu Hongzhuang’s fists slowly clenched, her knuckles turning stark white from the sheer force of her grip. “The elders of the Demon Exorcism Division reported that the scene was utterly saturated with demonic energy, a sight too gruesome to bear. Those demons… they are truly monstrous in their brutality!”
Her voice was laced with a visceral hatred and a profound sense of helplessness.
Su Qinghan gazed at Lu Hongzhuang, her mind drifting back to the impassioned faces of the martial artists she had just witnessed beneath the bounty notice.
She spoke softly, “It stands to reason that under the immense pressure of such a bounty, the demonic creatures would retaliate with desperate ferocity.”
The moment these words left Su Qinghan’s lips, Lu Hongzhuang abruptly lifted her head, her face a canvas of shock and indignation.
“Su Qinghan! How can you possibly defend these demons?!”
She took a forceful step forward, closing the distance to the wheelchair, her voice escalating with emotion.
“You didn’t witness the horrors! They are monsters! Monsters who delight in devouring humans! How can you possibly claim they are understandable?”
Su Qinghan did not flinch; instead, she met Lu Hongzhuang’s furious interrogation with unwavering calm.
“I am not speaking on their behalf; I am merely stating a fact.”
She paused for a moment, then resumed speaking.
“Consider the cat demon from Bluestone Town, the one I happened to save.”
Lu Hongzhuang’s breath caught in her throat.
“She voluntarily returned to that perilous town, braving the risk of discovery by malevolent spirits and having her soul scattered, all to find the Town Lord’s daughter and carve out a sliver of hope.”
Su Qinghan’s tone remained cool and detached, yet every word resonated with perfect clarity.
“Had it not been for her, the townspeople and I would likely be dead in Bluestone Town by now. And, for that matter, you too would have foolishly thrown your life away upon waking.”
“All living beings, like the balance of Yin and Yang, encompass both good and evil, virtue and vice. Just as there are good people and bad people, so too are there good demons and malevolent demons.”
“To accept hearsay as truth is sheer ignorance. To observe with your own eyes, to ponder with your own heart, and to discern for yourself—that is the path to enlightenment.”
These profound words resonated within Lu Hongzhuang’s heart, striking her with the force of a morning bell and an evening drum.
She found herself utterly stunned.
She desperately sought to refute, yet discovered she could find no valid reason to do so.
The cat demon…
Observing Lu Hongzhuang’s near-paralyzed expression, Su Qinghan let out a weary sigh.
Alas, a shift in deeply held beliefs is never an overnight transformation.
She maneuvered her wheelchair, turning it in a new direction.
“Come, I’m off to wander the streets.”
It was then that Lu Hongzhuang finally snapped back to reality. Her mind a jumble of thoughts, she watched Su Qinghan’s retreating back and instinctively followed.
After only a few steps, she suddenly seemed to recall something important, quickening her pace to catch up and firmly grasp the wheelchair’s push handle.
“Alright, alright! You and your endless grand philosophies! I simply cannot win an argument with you!”
Lu Hongzhuang’s tone held a touch of exasperated indignation, subtly mingled with a thread of dependence she herself seemed unaware of.
“Don’t imagine for a moment that this is settled! We’re going back! It’s time for you to teach me new talismans!”
Su Qinghan froze, turning her head to gaze back at Lu Hongzhuang.
“Surely not? I’ve only just come out, and haven’t had a chance to explore at all.”
Lu Hongzhuang, however, offered a sly smile, a grin that instantly dispelled the gloom from her brow and brought her entire being to life.
“Too late now!”
With a playful laugh, she abruptly exerted force with both hands.
“Now that you’ve fallen into this lady hero’s hands, you’re no longer at liberty to do as you please!”
The wheelchair shot forward with a sudden burst, the unexpected jolt forcing Su Qinghan to gasp in surprise and clutch desperately at the armrests.
“Hey! Lu Hongzhuang! Slower, slower! We’re going to tip over!”
The crisp cry of one young woman and the bright laughter of the other intertwined and echoed through the ancient streets of Wangyue Town, startling the roadside vendors and pedestrians, who all turned their heads to look.
